    Designing Your Home’s Entryway

Unlocking the Power of a Good First Impression

Think of your home’s entryway as a handshake, a first impression that sets the tone. It’s more than bricks and mortar—it’s a way to highlight your personality and create a seamless transition from the outside world into your abode. Are you ready to unleash the power of your entryway? Our Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus Ohio explores some design and style ideas from curb appeal to entryways—integrating design and style to bring new life to your home.

Make Heads Turn with Your Curb Appeal

    • Good Lighting: Install welcoming porch lights that cast a warm glow and enhance safety. Choose ones that fit your personality and your home’s style.
    • Color & Bling: Greet guests with a smile! A fresh coat of paint, paired with stylish door hardware and house numbers instantly transforms the entrance. Consider bold colors or unique finishes that reflect the style of the home. A new richly colored wooden door is quite the statement as well.
    • Dress up your doorstep: Update that welcome mat with a seasonal design, a fun message, or a classic look. Potted plants add color and vibrancy, a small water feature creates a calming mood, and seasonal decorations announce a festive presence.
    • Walk this way: Create a clear and inviting pathway to your home. Use pavers, stone slabs, or a new concrete sidewalk to welcome guests. Add with low-maintenance greenery along the borders. Don’t forget lighting your walkways for safety at night. Easy to install solar powered options can be found online or at most home improvement stores.

    Enhancing Entryways

    • Storage Solutions: No one wants a cluttered entryway, but life happens, right? Say goodbye to clutter by using stylish benches, shoe cubbies, or built-in cabinets. Multifunctional pieces that offer storage and seating maximize space and functionality.
    • Mirror Magic: A strategically placed mirror in the entryway can open the space, reflect light, and create a sense of depth. Plus, who doesn’t like a quick outfit check or last glance before heading out the door?
    • Welcome with Color: Add a splash for a statement! Paint a piece of furniture, add some wallpaper to one wall, put some colorful pillows on the bench, or add a vibrant rug to personalize what might otherwise be a boring area.
    • Light it up: Layer lighting with a combination of overhead fixtures, table lights, and sconces. Depending on the need, you’ll have the right lighting. And a light left on at night welcome those late arrivals.
    • Greenery is life: Choosing some low-maintenance hardy plants to flank the door or sit on an entry table or bench not only purifies the air but adds a touch of nature. Snake plants, Monsteras, and air plants are good options.

Seamless Integration of Outside & Indoors

    • Let the outside in: If you have a mudroom or a porch, consider installing French doors, a new door with a larger window, or large windows to connect the indoor and outdoor spaces. Creating a light and airy feel, while maximizing the natural light, can really brighten up the entryway.
    • Feature the flooring: Create a smooth transition from your entryway to the rest of your home with similar materials or colors to create continuity and visual flow. Or do the complete opposite and make the entryway floor a stand-alone feature to set the tone. There are no rules!
    • Control Clutter: Remember that storage idea we talked about? If you walk in and step over shoes, coats, and bookbags, storage is needed. Are you a bit unorganized? Create designated spaces for keys, mail, and other everyday items.

“The CotYs are great for recognizing the best of the best. I’m more thrilled with each win we receive. It’s truly a Team effort but it’s also great for the Project Developers, Designers, Project Managers and Carpenters who collaborate with our clients to build these winning projects that showcase their awesome talents. It’s also great to receive remodeling recognition by our industry peers with these wins,” says George Cleary, CR, Founder & CEO of The Cleary Company Remodel-Design-Build in Columbus, Ohio.

    The Winners!

Residential Addition under $250k: Transitional style living space addition with an extensive exterior remodel in Upper Arlington, Ohio. Remodel-Design-Build home addition project that includes a newly expanded family & dining room with a linear gas fireplace with stacked stone surround, built-in window seats with storage and more windows to take in the gorgeous views of the front and backyard landscaping. View before & after photos.

Two porch additions (front and rear entries) were also part of this project along with other front exterior upgrades to enhance the home’s curb appeal and tie in the new family room addition to the rest of the front exterior of the home.

Residential Outdoor Living $100k-$250k: Porch addition in Upper Arlington, Ohio. 2019 new build home sits adjacent to a wooded ravine. The homeowners contacted our Team in September 2021 to add more function to their backyard outdoor living space. We executed a design-build remodel project for upgrading their outdoor living space that features an addition of a new porch with a stone fireplace, plus upgrades to the existing porch with new outdoor cabinets on both porches. Click here to view the before & after photos on our Houzz profile.

Commercial Exterior: Clintonville Animal Hospital Columbus, Ohio. A transformation of a bland late 1980’s 1-story office building into a welcoming cozy cottage. The design-build plan and scope of work included extending the roof above the front door to create a portico and define the entry off the parking lot. Architectural detail upgrades include white framing trim detail with shake-style siding on the street side of the gable roof and board & batten siding on the 2-story addition. A coastal blue color palette with white trim was chosen to brighten the exterior and accentuate the green of mature trees behind the property. Watch a video with interior and exterior views of this project on our YouTube channel!

Commercial Interior: Clintonville Animal Hospital Columbus, Ohio. The existing 930sf 1-story building was constructed in 1988. The main goal of the project was to transform a bland, dated office into a welcoming, functional, expanded space our clients desired. The design-build plan and scope of work included building a 2-story addition increasing the square feet to a total of 1,960. Features include all new upgraded interior spaces that meet ADA compliance standards, durable LVT flooring, 2 additional exam rooms, multiple staff workstations and a reception area feature wall with hidden storage. The new 2nd floor includes a full kitchen, breakroom, more workstations, and storage.

Residential Interior Feature Element $50k+: Upper Arlington, Ohio. Industrial pub style bar was a collaboration between NARI trade partners. A design-build project that involved removing and replacing a dated bar the clients felt did not offer the function or aesthetic to fit their lifestyle.

Specialty elements featured in this project include custom cabinetry with personalized storage, natural cork backsplash, live edge wood back counter and knee wall top, shiplap under the front counter wall. But the showstopper feature is the collaborative effort on the custom 10′ x 3′ hand-hammered copper countertop! Watch the project video on our YouTube channel.

What are the NARI CotY Awards?

Awarded at the local, regional and national levels, the prestigious Contractor of the Year (CotY) awards are presented each year by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) to its members who have demonstrated outstanding design and craftsmanship through their remodeling projects. Members can nominate their projects through an online portal for judging by industry professionals selected by NARI Executives outside their local chapter or region.

CotY award-winning remodeling projects demonstrate exceptional design and craftsmanship in renovation. A diverse and impartial panel rates each project based on 5 criteria.

    • To what degree were the expressed needs of the client met?
    • To what degree does the project enhance the existing structure functionally?
    • Is there evidence of superior craftsmanship?
    • To what degree does the project enhance the existing structure aesthetically?
    • Were innovative used of materials and/or methods of construction used in the project?

The Central Ohio NARI Chapter announced its awards on December 1, 2023. Team Cleary had two projects win at the annual Holiday Party & Evening of Excellence. On February 8, 2024, those two projects plus two additional projects won three Region 4 East Central awards. A total of 602 entries were received across NARI’s 7 Regions.

National awards are scheduled to be announced on Friday, April 5th at the annual conference in Virginia.

  • Using Red in Your Home from Designer Emily Perebzak, UDCP

Using Red in Your Home from Designer Emily Perebzak, UDCP

It’s February so of course we have to talk about designing with red for obvious reasons! Red can feel contemporary, traditional, rustic or timeless, depending on the shade and context.

Red plays a big role for the people of Columbus. Having The Ohio State University in the heart of the city creates strong ties to the school. The colors of the college include scarlet, which influences people’s spaces in the area because of their passion for the Buckeyes.

Read on to join me, Emily Perebzak, UDCP, Designer at The Cleary Company Remodel-Design-Build in Columbus Ohio for tips on using red as a design element for your home.

    Psychology of Red

It’s important to start by explaining why colors in general are important in a room and to the human eye. Color affects everyone differently and can influence how a person feels in a space. A color isn’t just a color, which is why it’s beneficial to understand them. Red is a color that brings out strong emotion and energy.

Reds have been used in interior design for centuries. It’s considered a lucky color and is associated with Christmas and Valentine’s Day. The color evokes celebration, emotion, and love. To read more about the psychology of colors check out this article.

    red is bold
Sherwin Williams has a variety of reds to choose from!

    Red is a Loud Color

It can be intimidating, which can steer people away from using it. When used incorrectly it can overstimulate you. How about using it as a bold statement that creates a focal point in a room. When used correctly it can really elevate a space and make it feel more luxurious. Try utilizing red for an accent wall, with artwork, pillows, and/or accessories. Another way is implementing pops of red in fabrics.

    Red is a Warm Color

Joining cooler tones like beige colors can balance human feelings. There are many different shades of red from hot red to dark maroon to choose from. While the brighter shades of red generate more energy, darker ones tend to show a softer side that’s subtle and conservative. Consider a rich burgundy or brick red when designing for a space where the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, like a dining room.

    Material Inspiration Board

Showing different hues of red and layering of material can create a lavish space. The pops of color are balanced out with neutral colors. This allows for the space to feel more relaxed and calming. Another element used on the board is texture of materials. Create interest between the materials moving your eyes through the wood, tiles, metals, and fabrics.

  • Designing Kitchen Islands

    Designing Kitchen Islands

Elevate Your Kitchen with an Ideal Island

If the kitchen reigns supreme as the heart of your home then your island is a culinary center and social hub all rolled into one. After all, how many times are we gathered around a kitchen island? But beyond its utilitarian purpose, a well-designed island can elevate your kitchen’s aesthetics and functionality.

The Remodel-Design-Build Team, at The Cleary Company in Columbus, Ohio, loves creating a variety of shapes, styles, and configurations of kitchen islands specific to our clients’ needs.

    Shapes – Styles – Configurations

There are endless options to choose from so how do you know what will be right for your kitchen? Read on to learn what our Designers consider when incorporating an island into a design plan.

    Classic Rectangular Islands:

    • Timeless and practical. Rectangular islands are the most requested choice for kitchens as they work well in most configurations of a kitchen design.
    • Ideal for larger spaces or an open concept, they offer ample countertop space for meal prep and entertaining.
    • Extended overhangs with seating are perfect for breakfast and snack meals but are space-dependent.
    • A sink, microwave, stove top, or dishwasher can all be featured in this type of island.
    • Incorporate built-in storage solutions like specialty pull-out drawers for cooking utensils or pans for added convenience.

    T-Shaped Islands:

    • A contemporary twist on the traditional. A T-shaped island creates a dynamic focal point.
    • If space allows, the perpendicular shape can accommodate added seating, more storage, and multiple work zones.
    • Adding a statement pendant light above the intersection creates a bit of drama and flare.

    Peninsula or L-Shaped Islands:

    • Maximize corner space and functionality with this shape.
    • Incorporate distinct zones for prepping, cooking, and dining, making it perfect as a multitasking option.
    • Plan for built-in appliances or a prep sink, and increase the functionality.
    • A peninsula island will be attached to one wall, which is ideal for smaller kitchens.

    Circular Islands:

    • There’s a resurgence of curvy islands due to their fluidity and graceful lines.
    • A design that works well in smaller kitchens, providing a seamless flow and no hard angles or corners.

    Multiple Islands:

    • Why only have one island? If your space allows, a second one upgrades the style and luxury of your kitchen to the next level. Perfect for those who frequently host large gatherings!
    • Twice the counterspace allows for room to incorporate many different tasks. Think of using one as functional and the second for serving, eating, or even homework space for the kids.
    • Add a beverage station with under-counter appliances like an ice maker and fridge for entertaining and to keep guests and kids out of the main working space of the kitchen.

    Smart Islands:

    • Pop-out hidden power outlets and USB outlets allow device charging when needed but can be hidden away when not in use and add functionality to any island design.
    • Add these smart features, such as touchless faucets, connected appliances, a retractable TV, and built-in speakers.
    • Connect your island to a home automation system for seamless control of lights, music, and more.

    Mobile and Modular Islands:

    • A moveable island offers flexibility in a small kitchen serving multiple purposes and changing needs. Use when needed, and store out of the way when not in use.
    • Consider a unit that incorporates a built-in cutting board, knife block and storage.

    Waterfall Countertops:

    • Create a sleek and seamless look with a waterfall edge island. This is where the countertop cascades down the sides, creating visual interest.
    • Engineered quartz or natural stones like granite, marble or quartzite are all luxurious choices for this style.
    • This look can be added to one or both sides of the island and can also accommodate seating.

    Countertop Materials Matter!

Now that you’ve considered configuration and function, don’t forget about choosing a countertop. Again, with so many options, what material should you choose for your island countertops? We love them all and collaborate with our clients to find what works for their lifestyle needs and budget.

Here’s a list of a few of the more common countertop materials and their properties:

    • Engineered Quartz—is a man-made product of reconstituted natural quartzite. It is a very durable, low-maintenance material. It is available in a stunning array of designs, patterns, and colors. Our Designers love Cambria!
    • Natural Stone—is sophisticated, classic, and a choice for many people. Sheens, colors, and styles are readily available. It does require upkeep which can be dependent on the variety you choose. Natural stones can also patina with age so it’s important to know what type you have and to follow through with recommended care & maintenance. The most varieties available are granite, marble, and quartzite.
    • Butcher Block—made from certain types of wood like pine and oak naturally have antimicrobial properties that help kill bacteria. They also add a warm, soothing aesthetic to your space. Many home cooks like using butcher block. Watch out for knife marks and be ready to do some regular oiling to keep them in the best shape.
    • Stainless Steel—is sleek and hygienic. These modern and industrial countertops aren’t a choice for all, but they might be an excellent choice for your kitchen if you’re going for a more commercial or industrial look.
    • Laminate—is a flexible product that is easy to work with and a great choice when budget is a concern. Formica is the most recognized name brand but others our Team have used are WilsonArt or Arborite. They can imitate materials like wood, stone or brick and are used for more than just countertops. Although care & maintenance is relatively easy (no sealing required) the product is not as durable as the materials listed above.

Q & A with Zach Minniear, CR – Field Supervisor

What is your role for The Cleary Company?

As the Field Supervisor, my primary responsibility is to handle any warranty issues after construction on the projects has been completed. Other responsibilities include assisting Project Managers with punch lists when needed, scheduling trainings and safety education for the Production Department, and overall help ensure we adhere to our high quality standards of craftsmanship.

Why did you decide to take the certification test?

I chose to get certified to further my knowledge and be a better asset to the company.

    How did you prepare?

NARI provided an online prep course and I also did some self-study and review prior to the exam.

Why did you choose a career into remodeling?

After 12+ years in the US Navy Construction Battalion aka Navy Seabees, 5 of those years were in project management, staying in the construction field seemed like a natural transition.

How has TCC supported your growth, both personally and professionally?

George and the entire management team encourages all of us to better ourselves and in turn the company by continuing to learn and grow. The company provides all team members opportunities like certifications classes, online trainings, industry conferences and networking.

What do you believe is the hidden gem of working for TCC?

    100% it’s the people!

What do you enjoy the most about working for TCC?

Beyond the team of people I work with it’s the atmosphere and culture of professionalism, support and encouragement that George models each day.

    Why Do Certifications Matter?

Remodeling a home is a big decision and homeowners should be sure the remodeling professionals they hire are qualified to perform the work to the highest level of professionalism, integrity and quality.

    Hiring NARI Certified Professionals assure:

    • Your remodeling professional has met strict standards for remodeling expertise, project management and professional conduct.
    • You are selecting an expert in the field, capable of completing your project to industry management and quality best practices.

    Insights from Designer Shannon Tannehill

Happy 2024! With a new year, comes new color trends. Design professionals look forward to the inspiration released annually from our favorite paint companies. Some of my favorites to follow are Pantone, Benjamin Moore, and Sherwin Williams. After reviewing their “2024 Color of Year” materials I noticed a very soft and nature-inspired palette.

Read on to join me, Shannon Tannehill, UDCP, Design Consultant at The Cleary Company Remodel-Design-Build in Columbus, Ohio for a review of the fresh paint tones for 2024.

    Interior Color Trends

All these colors remind me of ones seen in the evening sky that range from dusk to night starting with Sherwin Williams, Upward (SW6239).

This almost pastel color blue reminds me of the sky on a summer afternoon before the sun begins to set. Soft shades are great for a bedroom, powder room, or finished basement. The coastal feel brings a sense of serenity and ocean calm while the creamy undertones of Upward are neutral enough to pair with other colors. I like these complimentary colors, also from Sherwin Williams, Drift of Mist (SW9166), Gale Force (SW7605), Sea Salt (SW6204), and Natural Linen (SW9109) to create an ocean oasis.

As the sun begins its descent, the next color is Blue Nova (825) from Benjamin Moore. It’s a soft, dusk sky feeling with its lavender and periwinkle undertones. It is a great accent in a primary bath or bedroom. Or paint all the walls for a delicate moody feel. But don’t just limit paint to the walls! Consider a statement furniture piece with gold or chrome hardware or a front door for a pop color anywhere in your home. Try pairing with these complimentary colors from Benjamin Moore, Topaz (070), Regent Green (2136-20), and White Dove (OC-17).

You know that time when the clouds begin to change color as the sun starts to get closer to the horizon? This next color could be pulled from this beautiful sight only found in nature. Pantone’s Peach Fuzz (13-1023) has creamy oranges with hints of pink. This is a lovely color that is reminiscent of that perfect sunset.

If you are a little timid and do not want to commit to an entire space being “peachy” add accents with pillows, rugs, and drapes for a feminine touch to introduce a not so common color. This would go great with floral wallpaper, wood tones as well as with the other colors of the year mentioned above. Other Pantone hues that pair nicely with Peach Fuzz are Honey Peach (13-1015), Pristine (11-0606), Marsala (18-1438), and Almondine (16-1415).

Once the sun has fully set, the night sky begins to creep over. Not quite black or blue but a dark grey with subtle hints of greens and browns without being too dreary. Like Urbane Bronze (SW7048) and Iron Ore (SW7069) from Sherwin Williams. I can see using this in a small space to give it warmth and dimension. Create a contrast with light almost white tones. Pair with a patterned floor or artwork to keep your eye moving through the space.

    Exterior Color Trends

New color trends of using dark colors on exteriors have been gaining popularity in Columbus, Ohio. They are great for trim, garage and front doors, or even the whole house with wood accents. For example, check out this gorgeous Mid-Century Modern whole house remodel and the traditional porch addition projects we built in Upper Arlington!

Prefer a deep green? Check out Mountain Olive from Behr Ultra for a pop of color on your front door. Classic neutral exterior colors like Chic Taupe or Weatherwood White compliment a green door nicely.

    Color Trends

I hope you can find some inspiration for inside and outside of your home with these selections from the 2024 colors of the year. Pro tip ~ Keep in mind to go with what YOU like. These are some fun guidelines for what has been forecasted as emerging favorites for years to come.

Take a chance on something you would have never thought of with my suggestions. After all, if you decide you don’t like it, painting is an easy change. And let’s face it, we have all had to paint over the red wall in our dining room at one point. Happy Designing!
