    Remodeling Your Laundry Room

Where do you do your laundry? Many older homes in the Columbus, Ohio area have the washer and dryer tucked away in the basement, which isn’t very functional for today’s busy families! The Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company collaborates with our clients, to develop a floorplan and create a home that compliments their lifestyles.

Moving the laundry from the basement to the first or, better yet, the second floor makes it easier for you to complete laundry tasks!

We’re diving into the information from the 2022 Remodeling Impact Report from The National Association of Realtors® (NAR) Research Group and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). According to this study, Americans spent $420 billion in 2020 remodeling their homes. Remodeling a laundry room is a game changer for improving livability and functionality in the home!

What the Report tells us about Laundry Room Remodels

NAR utilizes a Joy score for each project based on happiness. The Joy score for a laundry room remodel is a 9.5/10! We know that our clients are certainly filled with joy after seeing this project completed! 68% of consumers would have undertaken this project, regardless of the pandemic.

    The most important results?

    • 60% of those polled report better functionality and livability now that they have created or upgraded their laundry room.
    • 79% of people feel a major sense of accomplishment when they think of the project.
    • And us, we feel 100% accomplished when we complete a project!

  • Power Up Your Home Remodel!

    Power Up Your Home Remodel!

A hot topic with our Team at The Cleary Company is energy use at the office. We frequently ask ourselves ~

    • What can we do to be more energy efficient?
    • How can we save energy and lower our utility costs?
    • What changes can we make to create a cleaner Earth? (both in the office & in our client’s homes!)

There are many things you can do at home to save energy and harness energy from the sun. While some of these can be more costly than others, just thinking about them, could lead you to making small changes now. Here’s what we’re doing now and upgrades we’re planning for the future!

Changes You Can Make to Use Less Electricity in Your Home

Motion Sensor Lights – using right now – visit our office to see how they work!

It’s a simple switch! When the sensor detects motion the light comes on and if no movement is detected after a predetermined time the light shuts off. Motion sensor lights are compatible for home & commercial spaces.

    • They can be installed on interior & exterior surfaces — walls, doorways, ceilings and entrances.
    • Use them for safety or convenience. Lights turn on as you enter a room. Basements, attics and closets are popular uses at home.
    • User friendly and has many benefits when incorporating Universal Design into your remodeling project.

Our Team feels safer when working late at the office with the majority of our lights having motion sensors.

    Solar panels – coming soon!

Drive through a neighborhood almost anywhere in central Ohio and look up at the roofs. We guarantee on some house or building, you’ll see solar panels installed. In Ohio, with the number of gray days we have you’d think having solar panels wouldn’t be a great idea. Guess what? They are! Prices for the installation of solar panels have dropped over the last 10 years and now might be the time to install them on your home.

    • You will still have a utility bill, but you may have credits for months that the panels generate more power than you use.
    • Solar energy is cheaper, cleaner than standard power-grid based electricity and is “green”. Harnessing the power of the sun is beneficial to the health of the Earth.
    • Read more information here: https://www.solarreviews.com/solar-panels/ohio

Energy-efficient appliances – using right now – visit our office to see how they work!

Investing in energy-efficient appliances has a positive impact on our environment and your bank account. Advancements in energy-efficient appliances have made it possible to reduce the amount of energy needed to get the same work done. Benefits include:

    • Using less water while in use.
    • Smaller energy load needed.
    • Wash your clothes using cold water.
    • Refrigerators create less heat and better insulation helps food stay colder and fresher.
    • Heating elements in dishwashers to heat the water uses less hot water. AND contrary to what you might think, running your dishwasher uses less water than hand washing.

LED lightbulbs – using right now – visit our office to see how they work!

According to the US Department of Energy, 10 percent of your home’s electric bill is from using lights.

    • Changing to LED lightbulbs, while more expensive at the beginning, usually offsets the cost of your bill over time. Not only that, but you’ll also go through lightbulbs less frequently, meaning fewer lightbulbs in the landfill.
    • Add Smart devices to your existing lighting – you’ll save even more in cost and energy. Read more about Smart Technology on our blog!

Buying a New Car? Consider Going Electric!

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations – just installed!

With more electric car models now available, we’re seeing more and more of them on the road. This got us thinking—will we have clients and guests visit our office driving electric cars? Will some of our Team members start driving electric cars? Will our next company van be electric? And as we pondered these questions, we concluded that having an electric car charging station at the office is a great business investment.

The value we see in EV charging stations is:

    • Help the environment
    • Provide a needed service to local EV charging options
    • Make it easy for our Team to drive electric cars
    • Convenience to our clients who drive an EV
    • Attract new customers
    • Prepare for the future during your next remodel!

Did you know there’s an online directory for finding EV charging stations? PlugShare!

    Ready to discuss your remodel?

Our Team is ready to discuss and collaborate with you to decide what energy-saving options you can incorporate into your home remodeling project. We’re here to help!

And we are using, or have plans to use all these here at our office. We are hoping to install an electric car charger that can be used by our clients or any of our Team. We have discussed getting solar panels and are “electrified” about the possibility! We are already using energy-saving appliances, as well as LED lightbulbs and motion sensor lights.

Our Team can show you how to use efficiently power your home. Contact our Client Relations Coordinator today to schedule a conversation.

  • Kitchen Appliances Repair vs Replace

    Kitchen Appliances Repair vs Replace

It’s that sinking feeling—you walk into the kitchen and the floor is wet because there is a leak coming from the refrigerator or dishwasher. You turn on the oven and nothing happens. Drying clothes that don’t get dry? You get the idea—the appliances aren’t working. Now what? Should you replace it or repair it?

As your Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company, we replace many appliances for our clients. But sometimes we have clients who want to keep one or more of their appliances. This isn’t usually a problem, especially if we know they are still in good shape. But if they may be replacing it 3-5 years after their remodel, we know it will take extra planning.

So what to do when an appliance fails? If it’s an easy fix, there’s usually no question about repairing it. But a bigger issue is one to stop and think about. What’s worth repairing and what’s worth replacing and how do you know?

Recently we read a report from House Method and found some great answers. House Method provides expert research on home service providers. Their reviews cover home warranty, pest control, and lawn service companies. They are a comprehensive source for home services research. Read the full report here.

    Key Facts to Consider

    • Over the last year, the inflation rate of appliance costs has risen an average of 7.8%.
    • Typical households spent, on average, at least $354 per year on major appliances in 2022, compared to $214 in 2013.
    • Most of us will need to have an appliance repaired every couple of years.
    • Supply change issues continue to make it harder to get new appliances and, in some cases, replacement parts.
    • Appliance prices continue to increase. (You know this if you’ve been looking)
    • There’s more wear and tear on our appliances due to a year of more of work and school from home!

    Repair or Replace

A study from the United States Public Interest Research Group notes that the average family could save $330 per year by repairing appliances, instead of replacing them. Weigh the pros and cons of the value, the life span, and the cost for repair of the appliance as opposed to replacing it. Also, consider the following—

    • Repair costs include service fees and replacement costs but can save money since you aren’t buying a new appliance.
    • Repairs generate less waste in a landfill.
    • A home warranty (a service contract that can be purchased) extends the coverage of appliances past the manufacturer’s warranty.
    • Most appliances last for 5-7 years, with repairs every 2-3 years (on average).
    • Replacing might be the best option if you want new features, better efficiency, and lower repair costs.

Review the chart below to help you decide if you want to replace or repair.

House Method—How Much Americans Spend on Home Appliances, July 2022

Of course, sometimes a repair isn’t worth it if the problem is too big or expensive, parts aren’t available, or you can’t find someone to do the work!

Tips to Extend the Life Span of Your Appliances

Regular care & maintenance can save you money and expensive repairs down the line.

    • Clean the clothes dryer lint trap after every use.
    • Empty or rinse the dishwasher filter every few months.
    • Microwaves and ovens work best when cleaned.
    • Keep vents clear from debris and clean filters as needed.
    • Empty the refrigerator and freezer occasionally to get rid of unwanted food and clean the shelves.
    • Vinegar and baking soda are your friends. Do a website search for the best ways to use them on your appliances. We like the cleaning tips on this website.

Repair or replace? Ultimately it will come down to several factors—age, cost, what the repair entails, energy efficiency and what your needs are.

  • Kitchen Remodel ROI

    Kitchen Remodel ROI

Have you been in your home for many years? Or maybe you just purchased a home that needs a bit of tender loving care. One of the projects we get the most calls for is kitchens! Whether it’s a complete gut and remodel that involves removing walls, relocating plumbing, and significantly changing the existing footprint, or a facelift, refresh or upgrade—removing everything and replacing it, a kitchen remodel can increase your health and well-being.

Our Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company will collaborate with you to create a project scope that fits your needs and goals for your new kitchen. Let us help your space go from drab to dreamy!

We’ve been sharing information from the 2022 Remodeling Impact Report from The National Association of Realtors® (NAR) Research Group and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). According to this study, Americans spent $420 billion in 2020 on remodeling their homes. That’s a lot of remodeling!

Let’s take a look at what the report tells us about a Kitchen Upgrade Remodel.

What does the report tell us about completing a Kitchen Upgrade Remodel? NAR utilizes a Joy score for each project based on happiness. The Joy score for a Kitchen Upgrade is a 9.8 out of 10. That score tells us that a kitchen upgrade is worth it and produces a great deal of joy! 83% of consumers would have undertaken the project, regardless of the pandemic.

Remodeling a kitchen by completing a remove and replace upgrade has a cost recovery value of 67%. “REALTORS® provided an estimate of the likely dollar value each project would add to the house at resale. In comparing that dollar value to the estimated cost of each project provided by NARI members, a Recovered Project Cost percentage was calculated.”

It’s important to realize that NARI Remodelers placed the cost estimate of a kitchen upgrade remodel at $45,000 (nationwide) and the estimated cost recovery is $30,000.

  • Project Development Career Path in Home Remodeling

Project Development Career Path in Home Remodeling

Are you interested in a career in residential remodeling sales but don’t know how to get started?

The growth of the remodeling and home building industries through the past 8-10 years, in Central Ohio, has created a need for not only labor from workers who are in the skilled trades but also for sales professionals to meet with potential clients and educate them on home remodeling costs, timelines, and more.

At The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build in Columbus Ohio, we use a team approach for collaboration to create the scope and plan to meet our client’s needs. Through the process of working together, the Project Developer, Designer, Estimator, Design Consultant and Project Manager ensure the client is getting a great experience along with a project that meets their needs.

What does a Project Developer do?

The simple answer is sales! The Project Developer (PD) is the initial face of The Cleary Company. Their job is to support clients through the home remodeling process. They must continually communicate with our clients throughout all phases of their project.

Think of them as the quarterback of the client’s project. At many high-end remodeling companies, like The Cleary Company, Project Developers have design or estimating backgrounds, and some have both! Project Developer Jayde Boyd, she earned a BFA in Interior Architecture & Design from Ohio University and spent several years in bathroom and kitchen sales before joining our Team in 2019 in the Project Developer role.

Duties for a Project Developer/Salesperson vary from company to company but at The Cleary Company our PDs:

    • Engage with clients throughout their project, start to finish.
    • Create space plans and designs that address clients’ needs.
    • Collaborate with our Design & Project Consultants on the planning of projects.
    • Create budgets and scopes of work for their projects.
    • Coordinate all pre-construction project meetings.
    • Write & present contracts.

Project Developer Q&A – Jen Sommers, CR, Allied ASID

How did you get your start in remodeling?

I owned my own design business for several years and also worked for a small remodeling company doing sales, estimating and project management. I came to TCC as a Design Coordinator and then moved into an Estimator position. In 2020 when the Home Services division was created George & Aaron gave me the opportunity to create and lead this Team.

How would you describe your role as a PD?

Project Development is collaborative process to create a plan for our Production Team to execute. I coordinate the information from my clients to my Team. I work with our Designers, Estimators, Design Consultants and Project Managers from creating the scope of work to the design to creating the budget. Our clients have one point of contact from conception to completion.

What 3 things do you try to teach clients during the development of their project?

    • Setting expectations early and often.
    • Schedule and pricing are not guaranteed, but we always do our best to be on time & on budget.
    • Communication during development and into construction is important.

    Just for Fun!

    Describe your favorite TCC project.

My favorite projects are ones with big transformations and satisfied clients at the end of the project. Kitchen or basement updates or adding a bar to existing spaces.

  • Screened Porch Addition | Hilliard, OH

Screened Porch Addition | Hilliard, OH

Kristin and Giovanni love being outside. Their home had a deck out back, but between the weather, the sun, and the bugs, they knew it was time to visualize something different. They wanted a space that they could utilize with more livability. The plan? Replacing the existing deck with a screened-in porch addition.

    Q & A with Kristin & Giovanni — Hilliard, OH

What was the goal for your porch addition remodel?

We love to be outside, but also want to be protected from some of the elements—bugs, heat, and the rain.

What is your favorite aspect of your remodeled space?

It really accomplished what we wanted. We love that we can raise the windows up, sit down, and enjoy the breeze and the sunshine, but not be hot or swatting away the bugs.

What advice would you offer to someone who is thinking of remodeling their home?

1—Meet with different companies and understand what’s out there. Try to understand the different ideas presented by the various companies.

2—Don’t just choose the company with the best price. Choose the company that you have a good connection with and that can bring your project to reality.

3—Envision yourself in the space, walk through it, and plan it. Know how you will use it and how it will work for you. We spent a good deal of time thinking about how we wanted to use the space and what would work for us.

    The Cleary Company Remodel Difference

Why did you choose The Cleary Company to complete your remodeling project?

We interviewed several other companies. We liked everyone we met at The Cleary Company and felt they were a good match for us and our project. They saw what our vision was going to be. Also, we had researched the Eze Breeze product and wanted to use it. We brought it to The Cleary Company as part of the plan. They hadn’t used it before but were excited to try it out with us.

What was your favorite part of working with The Cleary Company and why?

The open dialogue we had throughout the project set us at ease. We really felt listened to and heard. After the project was finished, they came through and asked us how everything went, and what could they have done better or differently. The constant open communication was a strong indicator of their commitment to their clients.

Who from our Team stood out & how did they exceed your expectations? We liked working with Aaron—we talked with him from start to finish. We felt we could go to him at any point and have an open dialogue.

    Just for Fun!

If you were asked to explain in one word why you choose to do business with The Cleary Company, what would it be?

Quality. Communication.  (We each chose a word!)

Would you recommend The Cleary Company?

    Yes!

  • Bathroom Remodel ROI

    Bathroom Remodel ROI

Your bathroom is one of the most important rooms in your home. After all, you use it every day! Remodeling a bathroom is a big decision, but one you’ll never regret. Our Team at The Cleary Company Remodel-Design-Build has over 28 years of experience remodeling bathrooms for our clients in Columbus, Ohio.

Remodeling a bathroom adds not only to your satisfaction but also increases the value of your home. According to the 2022 Remodeling Impact Report from The National Association of Realtors® (NAR) Research Group and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), remodeling your bathroom has a cost recovery of 71%!  This yearly report contains valuable information about remodeling that we feel is worth your time to read.

What does the report tell us about a bathroom remodel?

Americans spent $420 billion in 2020 on remodeling their homes according to a study from the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University. While most consumers responded they would have remodeled regardless of the pandemic, 86 percent of consumers report remodeling one area of their home made them want to then remodel other areas of their home.

Let’s focus on what the report says about completing bathroom remodels. NAR utilizes a Joy score for each project based on happiness. And since we know we bring joy to our clients when we complete remodeling projects in their homes, we love the name of this score! The Joy score for renovating a bathroom? 9.6/10! That’s a whole bunch of joy!

Remodeling a bathroom has a cost recovery value of 71%. “REALTORS® provided an estimate of the likely dollar value each project would add to the house at resale. In comparing that dollar value to the estimated cost of each project provided by NARI members, a Recovered Project Cost percentage was calculated.”

It’s important to realize that NARI Remodelers placed the cost estimate of a bathroom remodel at $35,000 (nationwide). Realtors® estimated a cost recovery is $25,000, so 71% is the percent of value recovered from the project.

National Association of REALTORS® Research Group – 2022 Remodeling Impact Report page 24

And this is interesting—84% of consumers would have undertaken the project, regardless of the pandemic. And we have seen this isn’t slowing down. We get calls weekly to discuss renovating bathrooms, both primary, guest and kids’ bathrooms.

To learn more about this report, read it here.
