    Managing Your Design-Build Home Remodel

Offsite, On Mind. Do you ever wonder how much work is done offsite during a home remodeling project? You may be curious what is going on behind the scenes. Or, you might wonder what your contractor is actually doing when not physically on the job site. At The Cleary Company, although our Team may not be working in your home on a particular day, your project is not off our minds! In fact, we are always working on managing your remodel project.

Design-Build Behind the Scenes of Your Project

Our Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus OH has grown our business on trust, so it is important that we clearly communicate with our clients. How we are planning for their project and more importantly when and why we will not be at your home periodically during the construction phase. Collaborating and doing the prep work and planning prior to getting to your home will make our team more efficient during the entire construction phase.

Here are a few things that you may not see our Team doing as we are managing your remodel:

    • Pre-Construction meetings with trades and vendors to review plans
    • Project review meetings with Project Developer, Designer & Project Manager
    • Production Department Meetings with our entire field Team
    • Ordering building materials and products to build your project
    • Scheduling deliveries, inspections and trades
    • Reviewing and approving invoices
    • Budget & Schedule management

We have industry professionals on our Team, from estimators and designers to project managers and skilled craftsman … oh yeah… Russell too, we cannot forget Russell! They are committed to create a design and scope of work to suite your family’s needs. We ensure the details are taken care of before and during construction of your home remodel. • Winners of 38 (& Counting) NARI CotY Awards!

Winners of 38 (& Counting) NARI CotY Awards!

At The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build in Columbus OH, we’re proud members of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). NARI’s Central Ohio chapter (NARI-CO) is located in the organization’s East Central Region. Each year NARI presents their Contractor of the Year (CotY) awards to it’s membership. NARI-CO local winners are announced the first Friday each December. Our first local winner was received in 2007. Since then our Team has won a total of 21 local CotY awards. A record number 6 wins were awarded in 2019 which was an extra special honor since we were also celebrating 25 years of remodeling!

The NARI Regional winners are announced each February. In 2017 we won our first East Central CotY for a whole house remodel in the $250-500k category. To view before and after photos of this project click here! Since then we have been won a total of 14 Regional CotYs including 4 in February 2021. Watch this video clip of our four East Central Region winners!

All winners from each Region move on to the National competition. They are then scored by a panel of judges who are leading experts in their field. Our Team’s first National CotY award win was in 2019 for an amazing master suite addition that included a private Zen inspired courtyard. A video of this courtyard has over 4 million views on YouTube! Watch it now. We were so excited to win 2 more National CotY awards in 2020 and our fingers are crossed for even more in 2021.

What are the NARI CotY Awards?

The CotY or Contractor of the Year awards are presented each year by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) to its members at the local, regional and national levels. Remodeling projects submitted by members have demonstrated outstanding work through their craftsmanship, problem solving and use of innovation to meet the needs of their clients. The awards recognize excellence in remodeling and with over 45 categories available, there’s a category for every sized remodeler and project.

NARI’s promise, Remodeling Done Right, is exemplified by members who submit projects for judging. Each year entrants exhibit the highest level of skill, professionalism and dedication to the remodeling industry. “For forty years, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry has celebrated the best remodeling projects in the country through our Contractor of the Year Awards competition.” says David Pekel, CEO at NARI. “These award-winning projects exemplify the pinnacle of what the professional remodeling industry represents in both craftsmanship and innovation and NARI is proud to recognize the year’s best of the best.”

3 Reasons Why CotY Awards Matter to Our Team?

The numerous marketing opportunities available to CotY winners help set our business apart from other remodeling companies, and NARI helps by providing tools and resources to make the most of this distinguished honor. “We’re proud of our association with NARI and when our projects are recognized thru the CotY awards at any level it’s an accomplishment with a great ROI”, says April Howe, Allied ASID, Marketing Coordinator for The Cleary Company. Sure the most obvious reason for winning CotY awards is marketing but beyond showing off our amazing and setting our business apart from other local remodeling companies there are 3 reasons we value our wins.

1- Motivation – Who doesn’t love friendly competition? Each award winning project at The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build was produced by many members of our Team. As part of our Team’s culture we strive as individuals to always be better but to also support each other to be better. Winning a NARI CotY award is also an extra validation from remodeling industry peers.

2- Education – When our company wins our Team benefits. Each winning entry at both the Regional and National level earn scholarship money applicable toward new certification fees. These funds help offset professional training courses for employees looking to further their remodeling knowledge. Aaron Enfinger, CR, Chief Operations Officer at The Cleary Company says, “NARI Certifications not only benefit our company’s bottom line and our Team’s professional development but also demonstrate to our clients our commitment to our industry.”

3- Recruitment – We’re always on the lookout for great industry talent. Promoting our CotY award winning projects to prospective new Team members shows we value the highest level of skill, professionalism and pride in our industry. For many remodeling professionals looking to improve their careers, searching for opportunities with the companies that are showcasing innovative and creative designs and construction is a good place to start.

Stay tuned for more award announcements! The 2021 NARI National Contractor of the Year awards will be presented via Zoom on Friday April 30th at the their annual conference.

  • Why Should You Hire a Design-Build Remodeler?

Why Should You Hire a Design-Build Remodeler?

Making a major change to your home can be exciting and rewarding. It can also seem overwhelming. There are many ways to approach a remodeling project. Some of the most common are DiY or hiring a handyman, jack of all trades, or general contractor. For larger, more complex projects there are two options – hire an architect and/or designer and then a general contractor or hire a Design-Build remodeling firm.

Most people think that the design and the construction of a remodel project are two separate disciplines that require hiring multiple companies, but they do not have to be. In fact, in most cases it’s better if they are not! With a Design-Build approach to remodeling, one company is responsible for the entire project. There is a true collaboration with a Team of professionals working with you from initial concept, architecture, material selections, permitting and construction. Throughout the process, your budget is respected by your designated Team.

In contrast, working with a general contractor begins with you first finding an architect and/or designer who may or may not know what things cost or what things might be overly complex and costly to build. In this scenario, you will be responsible for arranging the selection and delivery for many of your project’s materials, fixtures, appliances, etc. This approach typically ends up costing you more energy, time and money.

    Design-Build Defined

The term “Design-Build” is used in many different industries today. A company using a Design-Build model of business is basically a “one-stop-shop” or “turn-key” firm. In the remodeling industry, this means one company is responsible for the design, planning and estimating of a project, as well as the scheduling and construction of a project. A truer budget target is established at the front end. Costs of various scenarios are discussed, giving you options. You can then make educated decisions on whether adding a more expensive feature is actually worth the extra money.

This approach differs from the more traditional approach of hiring an architect and/or design firm to create plans for a remodel of your home. You then bid the plans out to one or more general contractors whom you then hire to manage the construction of your project.

At The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build in Columbus Ohio, we collaborate with you on any project, large or small, residential or light commercial. Our Team walks with you every step of the way while utilizing decades of design and remodeling experience. Our process ensures organization, timeliness, communication, and a high level of skilled craftsmanship. We take care of it all – initial concept through construction. We live and love the details!

    Benefits of Design-Build

    • Communication is with one company from start to finish.
    • A Team approach to your project.
    • Savings of your time & energy.
    • Planning, Design & Value Engineering for your budget.
    • Detailed Scope of Work & Construction Drawings.
    • Clear certainty of your project’s price.

Which approach is right for your remodel?

Consider all of your options and understand the pros and cons of each. Whatever approach you decide to take for your next remodeling project, we recommend doing research and educating yourself. There’s 24/7/365 access to information these days online but it’s also smart to get recommendations from those you know. Ask a friend, neighbor or co-worker how their experience was with the company they last hired.

Consider these three questions we believe you should be able to answer “yes” to before hiring your remodeler.

    1. Am I comfortable with the people who will be in my home for weeks, possibly months?
    2. Do I trust the people and the process outlined by the remodeler for my project?
    3. Do I understand all the costs and potential over-runs for the project I desire?

  • George Cleary’s Golden Rule?

    George Cleary’s Golden Rule?

Treating Home Remodeling Clients Like Family

The truth about home remodeling is that it can be a hard, messy process. Treating clients like family helps ensure the final product and the client experience is exceptional. “Once clients hire us, they become like part of our family,” says George Cleary, CR, Owner of The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build in Columbus Ohio.

The ability to stay connected, coupled with an incredible team of skilled professionals helps create client satisfaction. In most cases, they become clients for life! In fact, almost 60% of the projects we built in 2020 were for repeat clients and referrals from clients. “Because we treat every client’s home like our own, we understand today’s decisions will impact tomorrow’s dreams. We approach our design proposals holistically, thinking about client’s budgets and future needs,” George adds.

Watch George discuss his clients in this throwback video from 2016.

George greeting clients at a multi-project open house tour which included his home. Food, drinks & fun was enjoyed by all!

Beyond treating our clients like family, read on for five more reasons you will enjoy working with George and our Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus Ohio. Team Cleary and Your One-Stop Shop – Working with The Cleary Company means you have a team of professionals working on your home. We coordinate and manage every detail of your project from technical drawings and permits to trade contractors and first-rate suppliers. Our clients have one point of contact with a team behind them that takes care of everything.

5 Advantages of Hiring a Design-Build Firm for Your Home Remodel:

The Tiny Touch for Every Project – No matter the scope of the remodeling project, The Cleary Company Team creates a space that is personal to our clients with tiny touches. Whether it’s customized storage solutions with pull-out drawers, extra outlets and lighting, or custom cabinets for a beloved family pet. Whatever our clients can dream up, our Team considers how each space is going to be used and creates a plan to guarantee it will function properly for our clients’ needs.

Our Trade Partners Matter – There are quite a few reasons a good design-build remodeler is able to complete many high-quality, unique projects. Collaboration and developing long-term relationships with like-minded industry professionals is very important. George feels a huge part of the company’s success has been finding the right type of people and companies to work with and that’s the key to maintaining the fun, family-like character of our team. The value of continuing education through industry organizations like NARI, NKBA & ASID is two-fold. First, it’s the opportunity to gain knowledge and improve skills. Second, the affiliations provide opportunities to network and seek out new trade relationships.

Our App – When clients download The Cleary Company’s app, they have the ability to connect with the work in progress on their project through photos, daily logs and project schedules. Other conveniences include the ability to approve selections and make payments online even if they’re out of town!

Paying It Forward – George and our Team believe giving back to the communities where we live and work is just as important to us as it is to our clients. From sponsoring local school sports and art programs to hosting fundraisers and volunteering for local non-profits, Team Cleary’s commitment runs deep in central Ohio. Some recent examples include: collecting food for Mid-Ohio Foodbank, installing a bedroom for Special Spaces benefiting a teen in cancer treatment, collecting school supplies for Operation Backpack, raising funds & volunteering, donating time & resources to our churches, schools and remodeling industry organizations.

  • Job Training, Growth and Career Opportunities

Job Training, Growth and Career Opportunities

When you begin a new job, do you expect there will be opportunities for growth, education and on-the-job training? Are you stuck right now at a job that feels like there is no chance for advancement? Here at The Cleary Company, we hire people who want to learn, challenge themselves, and are excited to grow! We see our employer responsibilities as a cheerleader, a mentor, and a developer of new leaders in the industry.

Pete & Eric, Two Project Managers – Two Different Paths

Pete Mossman started on our Team as a Warranty Specialist in 2017. Since then he’s moved to a carpenter position, and now he’s a Project Manager for our bath2BATH division. Pete says this about the opportunities offered to him by the Cleary Company. “Before I worked here, one of the biggest challenges I faced was the lack of direction. There is a big gap between being a “helper” and a project manager. Knowing how to move up to different opportunities in your career is empowering. The Cleary Company has given me the direction, vision and encouragement I’ve needed to move forward. I get to work with others to learn skills I’m interested in developing.”

After earning a degree in Civil Engineering, Eric Isler began his career in the construction industry by working on large commercial building projects. He joined The Cleary Company as a carpenter in 2017 and after just a year was promoted to Project Manager. The first project he was assigned? The large-scale commercial remodel of our new office and design studio. Eric believes The Cleary Company has supported his growth in many ways. “They have put me in situations where I can both succeed and be challenged. I’m surrounded by very experienced and talented people. Whenever I have questions, I can tap into one of our carpenters, or Rob, a Senior Project Manager, who have the knowledge or recommendations I need.”

These are just two examples of growth and opportunity here at The Cleary Company. We encourage all of our Team members to learn, grow, and create opportunities to succeed.

    Professional Accreditation & Continuing Education

When pursuing a career path with The Cleary Company, we provide support to our Team members. Especially to those who are interested in expanding their skills and knowledge with continuing education and various certification programs.

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) offers certifications, accreditation and continuing education to grow and build your skills as a remodeling professional. This is vitally important to us as a company. Our clients can be assured that they are working with the very best in the remodeling industry. • Growth of Columbus Fueling Remodeling Industry

Growth of Columbus Fueling Remodeling Industry

It is exciting to see the growth and development happening all around the Columbus Metro area. At The Cleary Company we have experienced tremendous growth in the last decade as well. As we’ve seen increasing demands for remodeling, we’ve also listened to our client’s needs and wants. This has resulted in the development of two new divisions, bath2BATH in 2018 and Home Services in 2020. These new divisions of The Cleary Company compliment our Remodel-Design-Build core business model and help our Team more efficiently serve our clients’ needs.

What does the growth in Central Ohio mean for careers in home remodeling?

While all of this growth has been exciting, it has not come without its challenges. We have felt these challenges most acutely in our workforce. The growth in our industry has placed intense pressure on the existing workforce. There has been and continues to be an increased demand for finding experienced, trained craftspeople. Not only to fill our labor needs but also the needs of our skilled Trade Partners. And we have decided to do our part.

There is a gap in the representation of the 35-50 year old demographic in the skilled trades due to the Great Recession. A decade ago, many skilled tradespeople that were in the burgeoning years of a career left due to the lack of work. This is one reason for the labor shortage we now find ourselves in. Another is the false narrative that life in the skilled trades is a “vocational consolation prize” (quote credit to Mike Rowe).

While it seems that Millennials have mostly shunned the skilled trades due to this narrative and pursued college degrees to avoid it, Gen Z seems to be learning the lessons of previous generations supposed path to success. College is not for everyone, and many successful and rewarding careers do not need a college education. In addition to this understanding, debt from college has caused many to pause and consider the need for an expensive and potentially unnecessary college degree.

Opportunities for professional trade development and training.

At The Cleary Company we see the dawning of a new generation of motivated, hungry, and creative people searching out a life in the skilled trades. We have opened our doors to those searching for a meaningful and challenging career but need additional training towards building a career. Job Classifications have been created for every position in the company which gives our Team the information of knowing how to navigate and plan their career path. This also gives them ownership of setting and reaching personal goals.

There are many ways to prepare for a flourishing life, college is not the only one. Coming soon is an additional tool currently in development, a construction course. The goal? To teach the fundamentals of residential construction to those new to the remodeling industry. A Skills Punch Card will assist the apprentice craftsperson to develop the skills needed to further develop their career.

The growth of our region’s economy and therefore our industry can translate into growth for the individual; professionally and personally. This is part of the long-term strategy at The Cleary Company to solve the problems of the labor shortages in our industry. Sound interesting? Build your career with our Team, whose strategic growth is built for meeting the demands of a growing economy in Columbus.

  • Basement Remodel | Dublin, OH

    Basement Remodel | Dublin, OH

With more time than ever spent in their 4,500 sq. ft. Dublin, Ohio, home over this past year, Ryan and Leigh Ann decided they were ready for a change. A combination of small children, a walk-out basement that looks onto a nature preserve, and money saved from no vacations led to a basement remodel they will enjoy forever!

What space did you have redesigned?

Our existing walk-out basement was finished with an open area and old bar, bedroom and full bath, but lacked style and function for our needs. We have 2 young children and reimagining a whole new space allowed us to convert the bedroom to a playroom with a new 6-foot opening with 4” white trim casing. Now when we walk down the stairs, we see out the 4 large windows and through the new opening we can also see out the large glass sliding doors. We absolutely love all of the natural light that floods in our new basement remodel.

What is your favorite aspect of your remodeled space?

We love the overall flow and the lightening up of the room. The white trim, light gray walls, new lighting and more windows has created a brand-new feel for the room. Now we can all be downstairs, the kids can play and be seen, but we still have our own space as well. We love sitting in front of the new fireplace and admiring the stunning herringbone tile work surrounding it.

Why did you choose The Cleary Company to complete your basement remodel?

We had our ideas but wanted to use a remodeling company that could bring them together in a cohesive design. After meeting with The Cleary Company, we knew they would be able to create what we wanted. They made the whole process seamless. We interviewed 4 companies but knowing The Cleary Company had the design team in house and we could see the renderings before we committed to the project was a major reason we chose to work with them. We had design ideas that the team brought to life in their proposed design plan.

What was your favorite part of working with The Cleary Company and why?

We really liked seeing the progress and the interaction to make sure things were perfect. One example was when the custom bar shelves were to be mounted. The cabinets, countertop, backsplash and lighting were installed and we were at the decision point to place the shelves. The whole design team came out to help decide where they should go. They held them in different areas so we could see where we wanted them placed. We actually deviated from the original plan a bit to get them exactly in the right place. We are thankful we had the opportunity to do this. They made sure the light didn’t get blocked by altering the size of the shelf itself. We loved them coming together with us to make the right decision and be so happy with the end result.

Was there a Cleary Team member(s) who stood out and if yes, how did they exceed your expectations?

The John’s were outstanding! John Coleman was here from the start to the end and his insight and approach was top notch. John Hamlett came at the end of the project to complete some finishing touches. He saw me struggling to mount our rear speakers and I gave up for the day. I came back the next day and to my surprise, they were mounted perfectly. When I thanked him, he said it was to no problem, he took care of it while the first coat of paint dried. Things like that happened all the way through the project. Now my wife knows they were hung correctly!

What advice would you offer to someone who is thinking of remodeling their home?

Do it! With what we experienced in the last year, spending more time at home, we are so glad we did it. If you can create new space in your home, you won’t regret it. We are so thankful we did it and feel it was perfect timing. Every time we come down the stairs, we feel like we are getting away to this brand new area that we can enjoy. Go with Cleary or someone you trust that can help you along the way and make sure the end product is what you want.

If you were asked to explain in one word why you choose to do business with The Cleary Company, what would it be?

Talented! Every step of the way, from the designs to picking out materials to the implementation of the design, we worked with the best people. Everyone is very talented.

We wouldn’t be who we are without positive client experiences. From the first phone call, to conversations during the project, and the follow up call a year after a project is completed, we are here for our clients. We believe our Team is the reason our clients are not only thrilled with their remodeled spaces, but their interactions with our Team during the entire remodeling process.

Luis sums it up this way. “I love going to clients’ houses and putting myself in their situations, then collaborating with our Team, to come up with a good plan to help them. I also really love meeting the clients’ dogs!” And that is true, Luis is always the first one to greet our clients’ dogs.

Leonor reflects on what she thought after reading and watching our clients’ reviews online. “I loved hearing how clients talk about us after their remodel and I thought it’s a reflection of the people working for The Cleary Company.” This was one of the reasons she chose to work with us.

    Client reviews

Client reviews are important. The following Guild Quality survey responses validate our client experiences and their interaction with our Team. Do you see yourself working with our Team?

    • Pretty much in every area, they were top notch from start to finish. I can see why they have such a strong reputation. I think it’s a reflection of George’s involvement in the company and his expectations for his employees. He has good people working for him. It was a wonderful experience, and we have a great final product.
    • The remodeling, skill sets, and the pleasantness of the crews were just as great as the outcome in all 4 of the projects that The Cleary Company completed for me. They took my suggestions and worked very well with me. I’ve been a client for over 20 years!
    • This company is nothing but professional and honest. It was a pleasure working with the entire team. We never had any reservations about the quality or satisfactory completion of our project from beginning to end. Our strongest recommendation goes out to anyone interested in a top-notch job.
    • The design team took in all our ideas and created a great plan for meeting our needs. The Cleary Company was recommended to me by a friend and I would also recommend them to a friend.

We love what Pete Mossman, bath2BATH Project Manager, has to say about our raving fans. “The hidden gem for The Cleary Company is our pride in the whole field of remodeling. Other remodelers can make beautiful projects, but The Cleary Company really wants to make home remodeling a great experience, giving the client all they’ve really wanted and even more! A relationship that is more than a “nice” project. This is what sets us apart.”

Design and Build beautiful, functional projects that meet the needs of our clients:

This third point is at the crux of what we do every day – remodel homes and build the dreams of our clients. In order to complete these projects, we need people that share that drive and vision. Our projects speak for themselves but we are nothing without our amazing Team. We rely on our Team’s ability to work together to create inspiring designs and build beautiful remodels.

“The Cleary Company doesn’t aspire to be huge, just the best. They value creating a relationship with their employees that makes everyone happy. As the saying goes, You don’t work a day of your life if you love what you do.,” says Luis.
