Designer Emily Perebzak | NARI UDCP

Join us in congratulating our Designer Emily Perebzak! She earned a Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP) accreditation from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). Emily relocated to Columbus, in September of 2022, from Wadsworth Ohio to join our Team. She earned degrees in Interior Design & Marketing from Kent State University and has worked for a Design-Build firm in Westlake.

Because more clients are wanting to live in their homes longer, we recognize that all our projects should include principles of Universal Design. It applies to clients who desire to “age in place” but also to their extended family, caregivers and guests living or visiting with them.

    Q & A with Emily Perebzak, UDCP – Designer

What is your role and responsibilities @ TCC?

As a Designer on the Development Team, my role is to work with clients to create a floor plan tailored to their family and within their budget. I also collaborate with my colleagues on each of my assigned projects through the completion of the build.

Why did you decide to take the certification test?

Personally, I enjoy learning and wanting to grow professionally in the industry. I want deeper insight when designing projects that work for people of all ages and abilities. Our clients wish to live in their homes for as long as they can. It’s crucial to create spaces that allow for people to age place.

    How did you prepare?

I attended a four-week, 2 hour, class online and studied the materials provided.

Why did you choose a career in remodeling?

I love being creative and problem-solving to create designs that work for each individual client. I enjoy collaborating with the team and clients. I can create custom designs that work for the people who use the space daily. Remodeling isn’t easy but I enjoy the challenge.

How has TCC supported your growth, both personally and professionally?

By providing me with training and education from day one. They prioritize investment in people by encouraging learning and certifications. Offering opportunities to attend industry classes offered by our vendors and manufacturer reps and networking through the local NARI & NKBA chapters.

What do you believe is the hidden gem of working for TCC?

As a full-service design-build company, we can fully develop a project before constructing it. This allows for a collaborative process for working through all the options and possibilities of a project. Our clients have greater control of their budget and can decide what elements are most important to them. Taking time to work through the development process in the conceptual stage allows for a more efficient experience during construction.

What do you enjoy the most about working for TCC?

I enjoy the people here at the TCC. We all work closely together and get to bounce ideas off one another.

Universal Design – What Does It Really Mean?

Universal Design isn’t something most homeowners think about when building or remodeling a home, but it is something we discuss frequently with our clients. Aging In Place or Universal Design (both used interchangeably) is simply defined as a home designed and built to be used and accessed easily by all people no matter their age, size, or abilities. This universal approach to design and construction is all about planning and details. It considers the products, features, and space planning considerations that need to be in place for the space to function for all.

Creating a Universal Design home means that the living spaces are designed with those principles in mind from the beginning and is aesthetically beautiful. Some examples in design, planning, and adaptations that can be made are wider doorways, smooth level flooring, curb-free showers with grab bars and benches, no-step entryways, lowered countertop workspaces, elevators or stair lifts, accessible electrical outlets and switches, and kitchens that offer multi-level surfaces for people who use a wheelchair or just need to sit while preparing food.

    What is NARI Certification?

Certified professionals represent an elite group of industry experts who possess extensive technical and management skills. These skills set them apart as capable remodeling professionals. Standards and exam questions are developed by leading remodeling experts who are well-versed in technical and management best practices for the remodeling industry.

Why does our Remodel-Design-Build Team value industry certifications?

As a trusted Remodel-Design-Build firm in Columbus, Ohio, we recognize the need for continuing education for Our Team to be atop the industry. We also believe we have a responsibility to our clients to stay up on the best business and remodeling practices as well as have knowledge of new or improved products on the market. From formal CEU classes administered by our industry partners to informal Lunch-n-Learns hosted by our vendors, throughout each year, our Team regularly participates in webinars and live presentations to improve our knowledge of home remodeling.

Not to mention, data suggests 80% of consumers would choose a remodeling professional who is certified over one who is not!

  • Kitchen Remodel & Expanded Floorplan

    Kitchen Remodel & Expanded Floorplan

Project Spotlight: After eight years of living in their Upper Arlington, Ohio home, our client realized the 1968 footprint of their suburban home’s kitchen did not function for their family’s lifestyle. With a desire for a larger footprint and more open space to accommodate gatherings of family and friends, they decided it was time to hire a remodeler. “We don’t spend much time watching HGTV,” says the homeowner with a laugh, “which is part of why we went with The Cleary Company Remodel-Design-Build. They have a strong design process and did a great job with the color palette.”

    As-Built Plans & Before Photos

The kitchen remodel demo scope included not only gutting the kitchen but also removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room. The dining room window and a section of the wall between the kitchen and living room were also removed.

Proposed Design-Build Kitchen Plan Solves Client Issues

The wall section between the kitchen and living room was removed to accommodate recessed pantry cabinets. About 15sf of floor space was used from the living room’s footprint. Using this space made a huge impact on the functionality of the kitchen’s new layout.

A large 13’x4″ 2-level center island offers the family seating for four along with storage on both sides. Wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry was installed in what previously was the dining room. The family gained a bar and loads of customized storage.

    The Result!

An entertainer’s kitchen, hosting large gatherings of family & friends is made easy in this redesigned floorplan. The whole kitchen floorplan was reorganized for better function. The cabinets are customized with personalized storage solutions including charging drawers, a spice rack and utensil holders. A new sliding glass door in place of the old dining room window gives direct access to the backyard from the kitchen.

  • Bathroom Design Trends for 2024

    Bathroom Design Trends for 2024

Staying ahead of the curve and knowing what is happening in the world of home design is where the Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus, Ohio excels. Whether it’s spending time at Trade Shows, attending product trainings or visiting design showrooms of our preferred vendor partners, we know what’s current with bathroom design trends. This year promises to be exciting and interesting no matter what design you want for your bathroom. Whether you are envisioning a spa-like retreat, a modern oasis, or a timeless classic, these trends will guide you toward a bathroom that’s both functional and stylish.

    Wellness, Safety & Environment

    Eco-Friendly Fixtures

Ecologically sound bathroom fixtures support the environment, save on water, and are environmentally friendly. Some examples are:

    • Water-efficient faucets and showerheads consume 30% less water than the standard flow rate. Manufacturers like Kohler, Moen and Delta have features that help reduce water waste.
    • Dual flush toilets incorporate high and low volume buttons which use almost half as much water as older model toilets.
    • Energy-efficient ventilation fans with the ENERGY STAR rating use about 50% less energy than standard models. Beyond that we recommend using a model like Panasonic WhisperGreen Select with accessory modules. The condensation sensor controls humidity with variable humidity controls from 30-80%.
    • Energy efficient lighting and LED bulbs.
    • Bidets use less energy, save trees and tend to cut household toilet paper consumption by 80%!

    Sensory Experiences

Create spa-like bathroom spaces for refuge and calm by adding these elements.

    • Heated flooring.
    • Aromatherapy, chromatherapy, hydrotherapy and steam shower and bathing systems.
    • Fogless lighted mirrors.
    • Bring nature indoors with green plants, natural stone and wood accents.

    Smart aka Digital Upgrades

    • Touchless faucets and toilets.
    • Digital shower valves for customized water flow and temperature.
    • Germ-killing materials and coatings.
    • Blue-tooth speakers.
    • Mini fridges for not only holding beverages but also medications and cosmetics.

    Bling & Color

    Vibrant Tile

Interesting is in and we are here for it! Create some visual impact and personality in your bathroom with tile. Material selections are endless with glass, porcelain, ceramic, natural stone or cement. Tile has been used in wet spaces since the days of the Roman baths.

    • Geometrics, mosaics and patterns.
    • Large format tiles for those who prefer less grout.
    • Mix ups sizes and textures.

    Color Palettes

There are endless possibilities of paint colors available! From neutral to dramatic a coat of paint is the easiest way to give your bathroom a new look.

    • Muted colors are soothing and perfect for creating a spa-like retreat. Think soft gray, sage green or blush pink. Our Design Team is in love with 2024 colors of the year from our favorite paint brands. Sherwin Williams Upward SW6239, a breezy, blissful blue. And from PPG, Limitless PPG1091-3, a warm honey beige hue.
    • Vibrant colors will energize and boost your mood, like turquoise and fuchsia. A powder room is the perfect small space to experiment with a bold splash of color. Try our Team’s recommendations from PPG Pine Garland PPG1126-6 and Purple Basil PPG1046-7 or Sherwin Williams Gale Force SW7605 or Tricorn Black SW6258.
    • Wallpaper is back! Bring intricate pattern and color to a powder room with artful designs like these. Check out the selection at Ruth Wilson Showroom or Home Source.

Personalized, eco-friendly, tech-savvy, sustainability, mindfulness, comfort, blissful, personality, and functionality (how many buzz words can we use to describe what’s coming?!). Your bathroom is an important hub for self-care, relaxation, and an escape. This year’s trends cater to a variety of tastes and preferences. Our Remodel-Design-Build Team is ready to make your 2024 bathroom the room you’ve been waiting for.

  • How Do I Know it is Time to Remodel My Bathroom?

How Do I Know it is Time to Remodel My Bathroom?

The bathroom is likely the most used room in your home. It’s where you and your family start the day and end your day. It’s also a place to relax, rejuvenate, and maybe hide from the kids. If your bathroom has seen better days, is stuck in a time warp, or the flow & function is not quite working for you, then it’s probably also the space you can’t wait to leave. Our Remodel-Design-Build Team has seen everything and knows when it is time to remodel. But do you?

5 Signs That You Need a Bathroom Remodel

    1. Damaged, outdated, or lacks functionality. Are your fixtures and finishes more than 15 years old? Have they passed their prime in style and finish? Outdated and tired fixtures can make your bathroom feel less stylish, and less functional. Damaged fixtures, sink stoppers that don’t stop water, leaking or dripping water, low vanities, outdated toilets, cracked grout, damaged tiles, or mold or mildew growth, are all signs that something needs to change.
    2. Inadequate storage. Clutter and disorganization in your bathroom is a notable reason to remodel. If there is no place to store all your bathroom necessities then it’s probably difficult to find what you need and keep the space organized. Customizable storage is key!
    3. An inefficient floorplan. A poorly functioning bathroom layout makes your daily routine difficult. If multiple people are using it at the same time and there is only one sink, a small shower, or not enough room to even turn around, it causes frustration and possibly being late for work or school.
    4. Safety concerns. If things are wrong, like cracked flooring, non-GFCI outlets, a slippery bathtub, or a large step to get in the shower, it is time to address these safety issues. A bathroom remodel can make your bathroom safer for everyone who uses it. Our Development Team uses Universal Design or Age-in-Place design principles to increase the safety and comfort of everyone using the space, regardless of age, size, or ability.
    5. Changing family needs. Your hall full bath might have worked when you didn’t have kids or they were little, but as the family grows, you all need more functional space. Or your primary bath would function better with Age-in-Place updates like grab bars, non-slip floors, higher toilets, and zero-entry showers.

    Benefits of a Bathroom Remodel

Get inspired by visiting our Bathrooms Portfolio!

Energy efficiency: Upgrading your bathroom with new fixtures allows you to get the latest and greatest new products available to utilize energy efficiency. If your remodel is a total gut you can start from scratch by adding in more insulation and new mechanicals like pipes and electric. New lighting with LED bulbs, water-saving toilets, and showerheads are just a few of the options. It’s time to eliminate water-hogging fixtures that aren’t efficient and lead to higher water bills!

Value: Not only will you gain a well-designed, functional, and beautiful bathroom, but in most cases, a bathroom remodel will increase the value of a home. You may not be selling anytime soon, but the value will be there if you do need to sell sooner than planned.

Functionality: We can’t stress this enough—we will improve the functionality of your bathroom. A larger shower or double sinks make it easier for more than one person to get ready in the morning. Creating storage, adding a freestanding bathtub, or creating a spa-like appeal will make your bathroom a more enjoyable and efficient space. A well-designed bathroom reduces stress!

Ahh, the aesthetic: Whatever your design thoughts are, we will collaborate with you to design and build them. A remodeled bathroom should produce a “wow” moment every time you or your guests enter it.

It’s not just about aesthetics (ok, it is about creating a beautiful, relaxing, contemporary change to your home), but also integrating smart technology, improving energy efficiency and functionality, and adapting to your family’s needs. Our Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus Ohio, will guide you through every step of the process and help you make the best design decisions, whether your bathroom is small or large, or you have multiple bathrooms to remodel.

  • How to Save Money on Your Kitchen Remodel

How to Save Money on Your Kitchen Remodel

    – Without Sacrificing Quality

At The Cleary Company in Columbus, OH, our Remodel-Design-Build Team understands that remodeling your kitchen can be a significant investment. But that doesn’t mean that you must break the bank to achieve a beautiful and functional kitchen. With some thoughtful planning, smart choices, a clear budget, and open conversations, you can save money without compromising quality.

How hiring the right remodeling company and following these savvy tips, can help your kitchen remodeling budget.

    1. Begin with a clear plan.
      • Know what you want to achieve by outlining your remodeling goals.
      • Make informed decisions about materials, finishes and labor costs.
      • Create your plan with an experienced remodeler with clarity on design decisions.
      • Keeping the existing layout means not relocating mechanicals like plumbing or electrical.
    2. Set a realistic budget.
      • Creating a budget keeps everyone aware of what can be spent for each aspect of the remodel.
      • Avoid change orders as they can cause the project to exceed the budget.
      • Prioritize the essential elements and know where you are willing to be more flexible.
      • Allocate a contingency fund for unexpected expenses. It’s rare for a remodeling project to not have an unexpected expense.
      • Stick to the budget. Adding or changing design or selection decisions after the contract is signed will almost always lead to upcharges.
    3. Choose selections wisely.
      • Durable, high-quality materials, such as Kohler, that last and are easier to care for. They might cost more upfront but won’t have to be replaced quickly.
      • Not all fixtures and finishes need to be high-end for an upscale look. Decide what’s most important to you to splurge and save on those items that are less important.
      • Be flexible and willing to compromise with your design. Our Team’s years of experience can be invaluable here!
    4. Reuse, repaint, and refurbish where you can.
      • Sometimes your cabinets, appliances, hardware or lighting can be saved and used in the new design plan.

At The Cleary Company, we believe that achieving a budget-friendly kitchen remodel without compromising quality is absolutely achievable. Following these tips with our Remodel-Design-Build Team can transform your kitchen while being mindful of your budget.

  • Checklist for Home Emergencies

    Checklist for Home Emergencies

Home emergencies are not something we think about every day. No one wants to deal with a home maintenance disaster, but do you know what to do when a pipe bursts or sewage backs up in your home? Every homeowner should know a few basics to maintain and protect their biggest investment. The purpose of the following checklist is to help you take steps to minimize a home emergency and assess any damage.

The single most important thing to remember is to put safety first and second is to act fast! After the issue is under control you may also want to document any damage and contact your insurance agent.

How to deal with the most common water-related home emergencies:

Burst pipe or major water leak:

    • Stop the water flow by turning off the main water valve (usually in your basement or utility room).
    • Next, turn on the faucet in the lowest level of the home to rid pipes of all water.
    • Don’t delay cleanup! The longer things stay wet the more likely for permanent damage – remove water & dry out.
    • If a toilet is leaking use its turn-off valve first & if it won’t close then shut off the main water valve.
    • If it’s a hot water leak try turning off the valve on the water heater.

    Flooded basement:

    • Keep dry until you turn off electrical power – put on boots before wading through water.
    • Turn off the main power to the breaker box – if unreachable call the utility company to cut power to the home.
    • Take caution in flood waters which may contain toxins from stored belongings.
    • Don’t delay cleanup! The longer things stay wet the more likely for permanent damage – remove water & dry out.
    • If flood damage isn’t covered by your homeowner’s insurance DON’T report it – it may still go on record as a claim.

    Sewage backup:

    • Homes with basements and in low-lying areas are most vulnerable.
    • Unblocking any visibly blocked individual drains is a good start.
    • In the basement floor drain & laundry tub, place a screw or plug.
    • Block the main line with test plug – insert an inflatable test plug & inflate with a bicycle pump.
    • Shut off the main water supply.
    • Call a plumber to help clear lines and determine if the city lines are an issue. NOTE: The Cleary Company can help with a referral!

    Leaking roof:

    • Act fast to minimize water damage but wait until after a storm to climb on a roof. Wet roofs are slippery!
    • Quick fix – bandage large areas with a plastic tarp, screw plywood over the hole & secure over the roof ridge with 2x4s or lath nailed to the roof.
    • Small holes can be patched with flashing or extra shingles or caulk.
    • Call a roofing professional for an inspection. NOTE: The Cleary Company can help with a referral!

How to deal with the most common nature-related home emergencies:

    Electrical storm:

    • Unplug sensitive electronics for protection from power surges.
    • If your home is hit by lighting don’t wait for flames, call 911 to dispatch the fire department ASAP because fires can hide in the walls.
    • Protect yourself from lightning by avoiding contact with electrical appliances, and landline phones.
    • Do not shower or bathe.

    Power outage:

    • Always keep a flashlight handy and loaded with good batteries.
    • Prepare for surges – unplug all electronics & small appliances, major appliances can be turned off at the breaker box, turn the thermostat heat down (or cooling up) and leave on one light so you know when power is restored. And when power returns DO NOT turn everything on at once.
    • Be aware if lights are noticeably dimmer or brighter after power returns, turn off the main supply at the breaker box & call the electric utility.

    Tornado or high winds:

    • TAKE COVER!
    • Move to a protected interior room on the lowest floor of the house as far as possible from exterior walls & windows.
    • Use pillows, cushions & blankets to protect yourself from flying debris.
    • Ignore the myths – DO NOT open windows AND the southwest corner is not always the safest place to take cover.
    • After the storm passes do an exterior review of the home to check for damages.

    Wild animal invasion:

    • Raccoons and squirrels can do a lot of damage quickly.
    • If found inside the home – isolate the varmint in a room, open the window and exterior doors and then leave the room. Most will find their way out on their own.
    • Outside the home – if they are a nuisance or creating conflict try to control & deter first, not difficult but requires persistence.
    • DO NOT CHASE! OR set your dog or cat after them – these two options can result in smelly messes and/or a trip to the vet.
    • Set a trap. However, per Ohio DNR regulations, it is unlawful to relocate off your property, they must be euthanized.
    • Visit Ohio Department of Natural Resources website for tips & strategies on nuisance wildlife.
    • Call a professional if needed. NOTE: The Cleary Company can help with a referral!

How to deal with dangerous home emergencies:

    Carbon monoxide alert:

    • CO poisoning is leading cause of accidental death in US!
    • If an alarm sounds and anyone is experiencing flu like symptoms, get everyone outside fast, then call 911 to dispatch the fire department.
    • Never ignore an alarm! Open doors & windows, and turn off all sources of CO, like gas appliances, furnace, water heater, kerosene heater and small engines or vehicles.
    • Contact the gas utility company to inspect your gas lines

    Kitchen fire:

    • A small kitchen extinguisher kept under the sink is highly recommended.
    • For a small countertop appliance – unplug and pour baking soda onto fire.
    • On a stovetop – turn off burner & smother flames with a lid or baking soda.
    • NEVER use water on a grease fire.
    • For an oven – do not open the door, leave closed and turn off the heat.
    • Keep in mind fires that seem to be out can reignite – keep an eye on the area of the fire for several minutes after the fire appears to be out.
    • AND if the fire spreads – get everyone out & call 911 immediately!

    Dead furnace:

    • Check airflow? Preventative maintenance is key – check furnace filter monthly and change as needed when clogged.
    • Power on? Check the circuit breaker, even a gas furnace needs power for the thermostat, fan motor and valves.
    • Gas valve on? The handle should be parallel to gas pipe.
    • Exterior exhaust pipe clear? Sometimes heavy snow can cover up exhaust vent to the outside.
    • Does thermostat need to be reset? Turn it down, then turn it back up.
    • Still not working call an HVAC professional NOTE: The Cleary Company can help with a referral!

Check out familyhandyman.com for a list of more home emergencies and how to deal with them!

Kitchen remodeling is one of the most popular home remodeling projects call our Team receives. And it’s also one that we love to design and build for our clients! The kitchen is the heart of your home, a place for family and friends to gather and cook, eat, and hang out. But when you’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen, it can be tough to know where to start.

That’s where our Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company, Columbus, OH comes in. We get to see the kitchen renovation process from start to finish. We are blessed and grateful to work with so many amazing clients since 1994 and to share their joy when they see their vision come to life.

From Vision to Reality: Kitchen Remodeling

Helping homeowners create their dream kitchen: Let’s face it, we love working with people! We wouldn’t be doing it for so long if we didn’t love seeing our clients’ reactions to their new kitchens, seeing their visions become reality, and spending time interacting with them from our first conversation to the last. We love knowing that we played a part in creating a space they’ll love for years to come. In 2023, we published Kitchen Inspirations to help even more. Download your copy here!

Creating a space that is functional: A kitchen isn’t just a place to cook. It’s a place to entertain, live life, finish homework around a kitchen island, socialize, and eat! It’s important for us to focus on the functionality of a kitchen for each client. Our experienced Design Team uses principles of Universal Design and Aging in Place Design to create spaces that function for the entire family in all stages of life.

Creating functionality in a kitchen is a bit like a puzzle. How can we add storage, create more space, change the flow and function, and optimize the existing space? Challenge accepted!

Transforming outdated kitchens: We’ve seen it all—outdated appliances, cramped layouts, small kitchens, and dated finishes. There’s nothing like taking it from outdated to beautiful and inviting.

Using the materials and technology that work for each project: New materials and technology emerge all the time. It’s important that our designers and craftspeople use what is best and needed for each remodeled kitchen. We know what works, what is new and trending, and what is timeless. Knowing all of this allows us to offer our clients the best possible solutions and products.

Applying our creativity and expertise: Solving problems with innovative solutions is a big part of our process. We love using the creativity and expertise of our Team to develop solutions to interesting challenges. Especially storage related problems!
