At The Cleary Company Remodel-Design-Build in Columbus, Ohio, a Lead Carpenter plays an important role in the production of the remodeling projects we execute for our clients.
They serve as the eyes and ears of the Project Manager on the Jobsite. Working alongside our skilled Craftsmen, they and the Project Managers, help navigate the space between the execution and the administrative oversight of the work.
It takes an individual with extensive residential construction knowledge to effectively execute the duties of a Lead Carpenter. They work closely with the Project Manager to ensure that the project schedule continues to move forward. They ensure that Trade Partners are scheduled, supplies and materials are ordered and delivered, and all inspections are completed.
Questions always arise on a construction site, and someone needs to be available to help collaborate and find the answer. Our Lead Carpenters are knowledgeable and skilled in all aspects of residential construction. They are one of the best sources of knowledge for any job site questions. Simply put they’re focusing on the details of a project.
Experience Matters for Lead Carpenters
Typically, a Lead Carpenter with The Cleary Company needs to have 10-15 years of experience in residential construction to acquire the necessary knowledge for this role. Expertise in all areas of the home building process is required to effectively lead a project. From laying out foundations, framing techniques to the principles of building science and an eye for the quality control of the details; all these skills and more are needed to expertly direct the activities and movement on a job site.
A Lead Carpenter never fully takes off the tool belt. Their happy spot is building and making dust. But another responsibility of our Lead Carpenters is teaching. Whether that is directing a crew of installers or jumping in and leading by offering a helping hand is a must to be an effective Lead Carpenter. Teaching the less experienced team members by showing how to accomplish a specific skill or modeling the work ethic and Jobsite behavior of a seasoned leader is critical to the growth of our rising superstars.
The value of a Lead Carpenter on a job site is more than simply being the most tenured or experienced person. They truly lead the project and the people to complete each project.

George Cleary, a native of Columbus, Ohio and 1984 graduate of Bishop Watterson High School, founded The Cleary Company in April 1994. With $10,000, a computer, a truck, some tools along with his buddies as labor, he used his experience in remodeling sales and his reputation in the community to secure jobs as a general contractor.
“The thing I love most is being part of the emotion of a remodeling project. Translating a customer’s vision into a design and then building their dream is the best part of what we do. This coupled with working with great friends makes what I do so rewarding.”
George’s Top 4 Favorite Client & Projects
“When I was asked to list my favorite projects, I found it was very hard. They are weaved in relationships more so than projects. I cherish that I have lifelong friendships with so many of the clients who hire our Team!”
Number 1, of course, is his first client! “Luke and Gail were confident enough to trust me with not only The Cleary Company’s very first job but a project that in today’s dollars would cost $150K+ to build.” They eventually sold that home in Upper Arlington, Ohio but guess who they called to remodel their next home and most recently again for their retirement home in Westerville, Ohio? George! Read more about their projects and George’s relationship with them on our blog.
Second, of his favorites is another longtime client, whose home we’re currently working on, is Georgeann in Bexley, Ohio. “She reminds me of my mom, always smiling and doing whatever she can to make you comfortable.” Starting with new windows in 2006, The Cleary Company has completed over 6 remodeling projects in her home and currently are designing another! Click here to see the 3 bathrooms we remodeled for her in 2014. To view her 2011 kitchen remodel click here.
“Another favorite is the custom home we built for Kate, a dear friend of my wife Cathy and my family.” After months of design, development and estimating for an extensive addition and whole remodel to a modest ranch in Upper Arlington, OH, we all came to the same conclusion. The better value for her project was to tear down the entire house and rebuild the foundation. Building a new foundation allowed us to better position the home on the lot as well as create a new dry basement with taller ceilings. Fun Fact ~ Project Manager Rob Lindeboom was the previous owner and sold this home to Kate years before she hired The Cleary Company. Read more about this project on our blog!
Although he could go on to list many more George’s final favorite clients are Julie & Garth. The Cleary Company has completed 7 projects for them over the last 10 years! In 2011 they started with updating the millwork and doors, then came the kitchen, 2 bathrooms, a basement and a new sunroom. Tour their 1st-floor addition in this video. The addition included enlarging the sunroom plus building a new master suite, laundry room and mudroom. This project will allow them to age-in-place in their beloved home. “I see them several days a week at the gym and they remind me how they love their home. You can’t get better than that!” Fun Fact ~ George was the altar boy at their wedding when he was in middle school!
George attributes his success to his honesty, integrity and his ability to build such a wonderful team. He’s happy to be part of enhancing properties in the neighborhoods where he lives and works. To learn more about George read our blog!

Laura Watson, ASID, UDCP – Design Department Manager – 30+ years experience, 14 yrs @TCC, Degree – BA in Interior Design @ University of Charleston
Katie Florjancic, UDCP – Project Developer/Designer – 12 years experience, 3 yrs @ TCC – BS in Interior Design & Business Management @ Ohio University
Shannon Tannehill – Design Consultant – 8 years experience, 2 yrs @ TCC – Interior Design @ The Art Institute of Cincinnati
Emily Perebzak – Designer – 3 years industry experience – 2022 Joined TCC – BFA Interior Architecture & Design @ Ohio University
We asked all of our designers the following questions and were intrigued by their answers. Read on to learn more!
How did you get your start in design and/or remodeling?
Laura – I found my passion for remodeling after working for a custom home designer and eventually my own Interior Design business. I loved the challenge of designing for remodeling projects.
Katie – I started in the New Home industry where I ran the Design Center, picking out materials with clients. After that, I had the opportunity to work with a Kitchen and Bath Designer, where I focused on perfect rendering skills and learning all the details of custom cabinetry in high end kitchens. Looking for more of a challenge, I made my way into the remodeling sales & design working for a small company.
Shannon – I took my childhood passion of rearranging my bedroom to art school and working in a furniture store. After a few years I made the switch into cabinetry and tile design. Now, with my nearly 10 years of design work, I joined TCC helping clients choose materials for their remodeling projects.
How would you describe your design style or philosophy?
Laura – I like many elements of different design styles. I think the key to being a good designer is to be able to give the client a design that reflects their lifestyle, personality, and function of their home. It shouldn’t be what the designer necessarily likes.
Katie – My design style leans towards midcentury modern furniture with accessories and decor acquired from travel or meaningful experiences.
Shannon – Transitional roots mixed with something unexpected.
Just for Fun!
What design trend are you most excited about? Why?
Laura – Multi generational living in remodeling. It’s wonderful to create a living spaces for older generations to living with younger ones. It’s important they have their own private space but can still be part of the family unit.
Katie – The natural, earthy look. There is something very comforting and simple about this style.
Shannon – Ash Grey hardware!! it’s a nice in-between of satin nickel and matte black and goes with everything. I love the use of greens and blues in kitchens. They add a neutral tone while not being boring.
What is your favorite (or least favorite) color? Why?
Laura – Least Fav= Grey, it’s so overdone. I love when clients are open to exploring more color. Choosing the right color can help improve overall well-being, mood, and mental health. Grey is not that color.
Katie – Fav= Blue-green, calming and reminds me of nature.
Shannon – Fav= GREEN!!! So many shades to convey different styles. Least Fav= RED. Used in small doses it is ok but it can also be very overpowering.

Kudos to Designer Katie! Committed to excellence in her field, she earned a Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP) accreditation from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). Katie joined our Design Team in 2020 with over 10 years of experience in the home design and residential remodeling industries. Originally from Cleveland, she’s a graduate of Ohio University, where she studied Interior Design and Business Management and was also an active member of the OU Design Group.
Katie prepared for the UDCP test by attending an 8-hour online course. Also helpful to her preparation was reviewing the study guide materials provided by NARI and the many notecards she created. She hopes to add additional certifications and actively participate in offerings from NARI of Central Ohio. “My certification has broadened my knowledge, provided me with more tools as I’ve learned to design with everyone in mind.”
Because more of our clients are wanting to live in their homes longer, our Design Team, at The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build in Columbus Ohio, recognizes that all of our projects should include principles of Universal Design. This not only applies to our clients looking to “age in place” but also to their extended family, caregivers and guests living or visiting with them.

Looking back at 27 years in the remodeling business puts a huge smile on my face and brings me great joy to know it’s the culture that has built, sustained, and grown The Cleary Company. We have been so fortunate to always attract and retain great talent.
I never really set out to create the best remodeling company in Central Ohio, but I think we have earned a seat at the table if there is ever a contest. How would one judge the best anyway? I know I would judge it on the best Team first and foremost. A lot of people would say the best is based on the projects. True, but amazing projects are the results of an incredible Team.
Many may say the best is due to the clients they work for. True, but you cannot build for those clients if you don’t have great people with impressive skills.
In this journey, I have never been one to think the grass is greener on the other side. Remodeling is a challenging job of superior craftsmanship, client relationships, and a valued team culture. What we do is hard. We are an integral part of people’s lives. We are roommates, cohabitating sometimes for months at a time, while totally disrupting our client’s homes, all while life is still happening. Therefore, it is so important for us to surround ourselves with the best people and hold the bar high. When we surround ourselves with great people, the work becomes less difficult, it becomes fun, and we create relationships with those we work for and with.
We have built a team, a culture, with everyone pursuing the same goal: Projects done on time, on budget and with raving fans. We promise that to be our mission. Occasionally, but rarely, we will drop the ball, yes. Will we do the right thing when that happens? Absolutely yes. We would not be in business for over 27 years without that principal.
We are blessed with the opportunities our clients provide for us to create amazing projects that improve their lives, and we know it is the culture lived out daily by our Team that allows us to keep doing what we do.

Did you know? National Volunteer Week takes place April 18-24, 2021. During this special week, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is highlighting and thanking members who have donated their time and expertise to the advancement of the organization and the remodeling industry as a whole.
NARI is celebrating with the first in a series of profiles of their member volunteers who help advance the organization’s mission every day! At The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build in Columbus Ohio we couldn’t be prouder of our own Aaron Enfinger, CR. Who’s one of five member volunteer members across the country who shared their remodeling stories. Aaron has helped develop certification study guides, put together workforce development initiatives and more!
Pam Patter, Executive Director of NARI’s local chapter, describes Aaron as, “Someone who’s always willing to pitch in and help. He was instrumental in organizing a local Certified Lead Carpenter class. Education and certifications help our members advance their careers with advanced industry knowledge and skills. NARI of Central Ohio is proud to have Aaron as an active member of our chapter.”
Aaron has advice for members thinking of joining a committee or volunteering for NARI. At both the local and national level, there’s a lot of opportunity for getting involved. Areas like membership, PR and marketing, bylaws and ethics, all the way to government affairs. If you’re someone with diverse interests there’s all kinds of conversations you can be a part of. You’ll easily be able to find something that you’re interested in and feel inspired to be engaged with”. Read the full Q&A interview with Aaron now!

When you begin a new job, do you expect there will be opportunities for growth, education and on-the-job training? Are you stuck right now at a job that feels like there is no chance for advancement? We see our employer responsibilities as a cheerleader, a mentor, and a developer of new leaders in the industry.
Pete & Eric, Two Project Managers – Two Different Paths
Pete Mossman started on our Team as a Warranty Specialist in 2017. Since then he’s moved to a carpenter position, and now he’s a Project Manager for our bath2BATH division. Pete says this about the opportunities offered to him by the Cleary Company. “Before I worked here, one of the biggest challenges I faced was the lack of direction. There is a big gap between being a “helper” and a project manager. Knowing how to move up to different opportunities in your career is empowering. The Cleary Company has given me the direction, vision and encouragement I’ve needed to move forward. I get to work with others to learn skills I’m interested in developing.”
After earning a degree in Civil Engineering, Eric Isler began his career in the construction industry by working on large commercial building projects. He joined The Cleary Company as a carpenter in 2017 and after just a year was promoted to Project Manager. The first project he was assigned? The large-scale commercial remodel of our new office and design studio. Eric believes The Cleary Company has supported his growth in many ways. “They have put me in situations where I can both succeed and be challenged. I’m surrounded by very experienced and talented people. Whenever I have questions, I can tap into one of our carpenters, or Rob, a Senior Project Manager, who have the knowledge or recommendations I need.”
These are just two examples of growth and opportunity here at The Cleary Company. We encourage all of our Team members to learn, grow, and create opportunities to succeed.
Professional Accreditation & Continuing Education
When pursuing a career path with The Cleary Company, we provide support to our Team members. Especially to those who are interested in expanding their skills and knowledge with continuing education and various certification programs.
The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) offers certifications, accreditation and continuing education to grow and build your skills as a remodeling professional. This is vitally important to us as a company. Our clients can be assured that they are working with the very best in the remodeling industry. A Team of industry professionals committed to the highest levels of integrity and quality.
There are currently nine members of our Team who hold NARI certifications and several more are studying for their upcoming tests. We commit to offering our Team support with both finances and experiences to help them succeed and we applaud their efforts and dedication to their craft!
It is exciting to see the growth and development happening all around the Columbus Metro area. At The Cleary Company we have experienced tremendous growth in the last decade as well. As we’ve seen increasing demands for remodeling, we’ve also listened to our client’s needs and wants. This has resulted in the development of two new divisions, bath2BATH in 2018 and Home Services in 2020. These new divisions of The Cleary Company compliment our Remodel-Design-Build core business model and help our Team more efficiently serve our clients’ needs.
What does the growth in Central Ohio mean for careers in home remodeling?
While all of this growth has been exciting, it has not come without its challenges. We have felt these challenges most acutely in our workforce. The growth in our industry has placed intense pressure on the existing workforce. There has been and continues to be an increased demand for finding experienced, trained craftspeople. Not only to fill our labor needs but also the needs of our skilled Trade Partners. And we have decided to do our part.
There is a gap in the representation of the 35-50 year old demographic in the skilled trades due to the Great Recession. A decade ago, many skilled tradespeople that were in the burgeoning years of a career left due to the lack of work. This is one reason for the labor shortage we now find ourselves in. Another is the false narrative that life in the skilled trades is a “vocational consolation prize” (quote credit to Mike Rowe).
While it seems that Millennials have mostly shunned the skilled trades due to this narrative and pursued college degrees to avoid it, Gen Z seems to be learning the lessons of previous generations supposed path to success. College is not for everyone, and many successful and rewarding careers do not need a college education. In addition to this understanding, debt from college has caused many to pause and consider the need for an expensive and potentially unnecessary college degree.
Opportunities for professional trade development and training.
At The Cleary Company we see the dawning of a new generation of motivated, hungry, and creative people searching out a life in the skilled trades. We have opened our doors to those searching for a meaningful and challenging career but need additional training towards building a career. Job Classifications have been created for every position in the company which gives our Team the information of knowing how to navigate and plan their career path. This also gives them ownership of setting and reaching personal goals.
There are many ways to prepare for a flourishing life, college is not the only one. Coming soon is an additional tool currently in development, a construction course. The goal? To teach the fundamentals of residential construction to those new to the remodeling industry. A Skills Punch Card will assist the apprentice craftsperson to develop the skills needed to further develop their career.
The growth of our region’s economy and therefore our industry can translate into growth for the individual; professionally and personally. This is part of the long-term strategy at The Cleary Company to solve the problems of the labor shortages in our industry. Sound interesting? Build your career with our Team, whose strategic growth is built for meeting the demands of a growing economy in Columbus.
3 Reasons a Career in Remodeling at The Cleary Company is a Top Choice for Industry Professionals
There are many jobs and careers available within the remodeling, construction and building industries in central Ohio. The Cleary Company is hiring year-round to meet the demand for our services by homeowners in the Columbus Ohio metro area! Opportunities abound for those with the ambition, skills and initiative to grow in the fun and fast-paced residential remodeling industry. It’s truly wonderful to work for The Cleary Company!
What sets us apart? Everyone wants to be part of the best and work for a reputable company. We work hard to be the best remodeling company in central Ohio for both our clients and our employees. Our Team enjoys fostering relationships, having fun, being the best at what we do, and doing it with passion. Those are some of the reasons our employees stay with us for many years.
Our three goals for being a great employer are simple, and yet, profound in that simplicity. What are these goals? And, what do some of our Team members and clients say about our goals and our work?
Ensure a superior, respectful company culture:
This is our touchpoint, the value that consistently reveals itself through our work, our reviews, and our commitment to our clients’ and Team members’ well-being. We respect everyone we meet, listen to everyone’s needs and wants, and ensure we not only work hard, but play hard as well. Read on to see what our Team says about our culture.
Eric Isler, Project Manager, sums up his support and growth with the company this way. “The Cleary Company has put me in situations where I can both succeed and be challenged, by surrounding me with very talented people. Everything we do in remodeling is unique and different, but we have great resources to get us through those challenges.“ Eric goes on to say the culture of the company is a true benefit to working here. “George Cleary does a great job instilling a great atmosphere to work in. He hires great people and it’s a great Team to work with.”
Leonor Carrasco, Production Manager, reiterates our core belief. “The Cleary Company has shown me how to improve the lives of others. This is our core belief and we do it every day by designing, building, managing projects and trade partners, and getting homes remodeled and upgraded. It improves my life every day by what we do.” She adds, “There is support here at The Cleary Company and we are a Team. There is a path for each one of us.”
Luis Martinez, Project Consultant, faced some challenges working at other companies, but has found more support here. “At some other companies where I’ve worked, it can be hard to find someone to talk to about an issue with a certain part of a project, or just something personal, and get a solution without feeling like I’m alone. I found I had to schedule a meeting just to talk about what I needed. Here at The Cleary Company, I’ve found many members on my Team that I can talk to and collaborate with.”
Maintain an industry leading client experience:
We wouldn’t be who we are without positive client experiences. From the first phone call, to conversations during the project, and the follow up call a year after a project is completed, we are here for our clients. We believe our Team is the reason our clients are not only thrilled with their remodeled spaces, but their interactions with our Team during the entire remodeling process.
Luis sums it up this way. “I love going to clients’ houses and putting myself in their situations, then collaborating with our Team, to come up with a good plan to help them. I also really love meeting the clients’ dogs!” And that is true, Luis is always the first one to greet our clients’ dogs.
Leonor reflects on what she thought after reading and watching our clients’ reviews online. “I loved hearing how clients talk about us after their remodel and I thought it’s a reflection of the people working for The Cleary Company.” This was one of the reasons she chose to work with us.
Client reviews
Client reviews are important. The following Guild Quality survey responses validate our client experiences and their interaction with our Team. Do you see yourself working with our Team?
Pretty much in every area, they were top notch from start to finish. I can see why they have such a strong reputation. I think it’s a reflection of George’s involvement in the company and his expectations for his employees. He has good people working for him. It was a wonderful experience, and we have a great final product.
The remodeling, skill sets, and the pleasantness of the crews were just as great as the outcome in all 4 of the projects that The Cleary Company completed for me. They took my suggestions and worked very well with me. I’ve been a client for over 20 years!
This company is nothing but professional and honest. It was a pleasure working with the entire team. We never had any reservations about the quality or satisfactory completion of our project from beginning to end. Our strongest recommendation goes out to anyone interested in a top-notch job.
The design team took in all our ideas and created a great plan for meeting our needs. The Cleary Company was recommended to me by a friend and I would also recommend them to a friend.
We love what Pete Mossman, bath2BATH Project Manager, has to say about our raving fans. “The hidden gem for The Cleary Company is our pride in the whole field of remodeling. Other remodelers can make beautiful projects, but The Cleary Company really wants to make home remodeling a great experience, giving the client all they’ve really wanted and even more! A relationship that is more than a “nice” project. This is what sets us apart.”
Design and Build beautiful, functional projects that meet the needs of our clients:
This third point is at the crux of what we do every day – remodel homes and build the dreams of our clients. In order to complete these projects, we need people that share that drive and vision. Our projects speak for themselves but we are nothing without our amazing Team. We rely on our Team’s ability to work together to create inspiring designs and build beautiful remodels.
“The Cleary Company doesn’t aspire to be huge, just the best. They value creating a relationship with their employees that makes everyone happy. As the saying goes, You don’t work a day of your life if you love what you do.,” says Luis.

General Manager at The Cleary Company Remodel – Design – Build, Aaron Enfinger, CR, shares important information to help guide you in your journey to join the construction and remodeling industries.
Education and experience
For the construction field, nothing replaces experience. Building knowledge is important but being able to perform on the crew is your foot in the door.
Find ways to be on a jobsite as an apprentice or laborer. This is the quickest way to learn the knowledge you will need.
A trade school or community college may be important to you in order to learn more terminology and concepts and advance your career in a specialized field. One thing to consider is attending a trade school while working on the job.
Gaining employment in interior design and architecture usually does require specific education in design. However, The Cleary Company has hired people not formally educated in interior design or architecture. These employees had committed themselves to learning the industry and excelling regardless of the course of study they had pursued as a student. (Though this is an exception, as most have received a college education.)
Getting started with school and/or a job
Find a company you respect and approach them. Ask what it would take to work in the building industry for them. Can you shadow someone to get a sense of the job you want to do? Show a true desire and initiative to work in the industry and at their company specifically.
Network! Find industry associations where you can attend meetings and get to know who the great companies are in the area. NARI of Central Ohio is the local industry association in Columbus OH and provides a great way to meet some of the successful companies and people in the industry.
Jobs are landed through connections. Be proactive in making many connections. Ask family and friends as well as people working in local tool, woodworking and construction stores around town to find someone who knows who is hiring.
Start to build your collection of tools to show how motivated you are to those that are willing to give you a chance.
Read publications to learn the jargon and search out opportunities on social media for learning the basics.
If school is going to be your route, talk with graduates and track their career path. Make sure a program combines theory with practical application. Someone understanding that studs are on 16” centers is different than being able to read prints and then layout and build wall sections.
Financial opportunities
If you are motivated and possess an entrepreneurial spirit, there are many opportunities to build your own business in the construction, building and remodeling industry. Your goal may be to have your own company one day and we can tell you it is possible and financially rewarding if you’re willing to put in the hard work.
Working directly for a company is what most people choose to do. You can still earn a comfortable wage and enjoy a fulfilling career working for a great company. According to Indeed, this list gives you an idea of salaries, though this depends greatly on the geographical area of the country.
Finding work
Being a hard worker is the key to landing and keeping a great job. Show up to work on time, be present and be willing to learn. Offer to help out in all areas of the company and prove yourself indispensable.
We are in a skilled labor shortage in the Columbus, Ohio, area and you will find work here in the construction and building industry. At The Cleary Company, we look for motivated individuals who are willing to learn and have a positive work ethic.
At The Cleary Company our Team enjoys teaching those that choose to join us! Our culture is one of collaboration, a strong work ethic, and a desire to create the very best remodeling projects for our clients. If you want it and are willing to put in the work, the rewards are many.
