  • Are You Ready For a New Career in Construction and Remodeling?

Are You Ready For a New Career in Construction and Remodeling?

Skilled trade jobs in the burgeoning construction and remodeling industry are in high demand in the Columbus, Ohio, area and throughout the country. Many of us have been told a college education is the only way to a successful career. However, we know firsthand a career in construction and the skilled trades can be fulfilling, satisfying and lucrative!

We challenge you to find out more about a trade you find interesting, get the schooling or on-the-job training you need, and pursue it with passion. You will be able to build a stable career in construction and remodeling if you’re willing to work hard, stay motivated, and enjoy solving problems. For example, a great start is to check out Columbus State Community College‘s program offerings.

What jobs are available in the construction and remodeling industries?

    • All skilled trades are currently in high demand! Plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, tile setters, HVAC technicians, welders, and masons.
    • The current labor shortage is bound to continue. As the current talented workforce ages out, the need continues to grow.

Benefits of pursuing a career in the remodeling and construction industries:

    • It’s rewarding! Specifically, at The Cleary Company, we are primarily residential remodelers and find creating, building, and fixing intrinsically rewarding. At the end of the day, we see a real and tangible result. Walls are framed, floors are laid, rooms are painted, and plumbing is installed; it’s satisfying to see what you and your team have created.
    • You directly impact the quality of life for your clients. This is because you get to work in their homes, build rapport, and get to know their daily life. Their appreciation of your work is rewarding as well.
    • Jobs are plentiful. Due to retirements and fewer people entering the industry, you will have job security.
    • Residential real estate continues to be a booming industry in Central Ohio and with this come all of the jobs needed to build and remodel homes. Your skilled trade will always be needed.
    • You can earn a comfortable, even lucrative, income.

How important are construction trade jobs?

    • If current jobs continue to go unfilled the labor shortages in trade careers will continue to rise. Due to this, the availability of these services will become harder to secure, resulting in the window to complete home improvement projects will become longer and, most likely, remodeling costs will go up at an accelerated rate.
    • “People place a high value on the talents of a tradesperson. Just ask someone that needs a toilet fixed or old light fixtures replaced how they view the tradesperson who helped them fix their home,” shares General Manager of The Cleary Company, Aaron Enfinger, CR. “One of the keys to people loving where they live is loving how it functions. Or conversely, how they hate it because it has so many things that do not function properly. Loose handrails, doors and locks that won’t shut or latch; When a tradesperson fixes these concerns, the value of their skills skyrocket to those whose quality of life was just enhanced.”

  • Reflections on My Career in Construction

Reflections on My Career in Construction

At The Cleary Company Remodel-Design-Build in Columbus, Ohio, we believe in our Team members and their capabilities. Project Manager, Pete Mossman, CLC, shares his career path into the remodeling industry. Read on to learn how he got started in the trades, what he’s learned, and what you should consider if you think this career is for you.

Project Manager, Pete Mossman, CLC shares his journey in Remodeling!

How did you get started in the trades?

    • My high school required internships 2 days/week. The goal of school was that you were able to walk away with a career, rather than just some good grades. So, I tried a couple things; 1) retail–Jeni’s ice cream, 2) culinary–worked at a local bakery, 3) trades–helped rebuild houses from hurricane Katrina and 4) Sport fitness-worked at a gym
    • I studied exercise science in college, but through mutual friends, got offered an entry level job at a local remodeling company. When I graduated from college, it was my first full time job.

When did you know you wanted a career in the trades?

    • I truly enjoyed my first experience in the trades–2 different church service trips to New Orleans. It mainly was performing drywall work, but I did some trim, tile, and painting as well. For some reason along the way, it still never quite seemed like an option for a career. Maybe it’s just because I didn’t know anybody who did that for a living.
    • It probably wasn’t until a couple years into remodeling that I realized I wanted this to be a career.

What should you think about if you are considering a career in the trades?

    • Starting in the trades with no experience is difficult. I think the most challenging part is that you have SO MUCH to learn, and you want to be great at all these things right now. It is slow and steady progress. It takes patience. Once you start getting some freedom and responsibility, that is really when you get the big rewards. This is what trade work has to offer that most places can’t quite compare to. You see all your progress. Everything is tangible. It either works or it doesn’t.
    • Another unique thing about working in the trades is the usefulness outside of work. I can fix/repair/improve most parts of my home by myself. Think about the money that can save you! Not to mention it can be exactly the way my wife and I want it to be.
    • Really consider the value that comes from building things with your hands. It is almost therapeutic some days. Having a bad week? Good thing you get to do demo today and you can take it out by knocking that wall down! There is a physical transformation of a space happening and you get to be a part of it.
    • The trades also have great job security. People will always need work done to their house or office. If the economy is great, maybe you get a big renovation. If the economy is not as flush, you at least have service work. People will always need your advice, input and work.

What do you wish someone told me before you started working in the trades?

    • Be patient; learn by doing, learn by making mistakes and correcting them.
    • Trades people are NEEDED. Most of the contractors I work with say they can’t find any good, young, help that want to learn.
    • You don’t have to find your lifelong career IMMEDIATELY after high school or college: So many people ask that of the new graduate, but it’s ok to try different things out.
    • If you are somewhat competent, friendly, and young, you can probably get a trades job somewhere. A lot of places want you to have no experience, so they can train you the way they want.
    • Ask tons of questions. The person who is your boss has probably worked in the trades for many years. They have a lot they can teach you.

A Career Path for Continued Growth

Do Pete’s reflections have you thinking about a job in the trades? When Pete was hired at The Cleary Company in 2017, his role was Warranty Specialist. His carpentry skills also made him a valuable asset to our bathroom remodeling production Team. Fast forward to 2019 when he was promoted to his current role as bathroom Project Manager.

  • The Power Of Connections

    The Power Of Connections

Connections – we all have them and we all need them, whether it’s in business or our personal lives. Here at The Cleary Company, we know the connections with our Team, our vendors, and our clients help us navigate our way through our business goals. The connection with our marketing agency, Burgie MediaFusion, has been a successful part of our business for many years. Through dynamic collaboration they help us create brand awareness, refine our message, establish our digital presence and further our success by being a sounding board for our ideas for future growth. This connection with Burgie MediaFusion is one that we are grateful for and appreciate.

Connections – Make the Right Ones

Barb Burgie, owner at Burgie MediaFusion says, “In our lifetime, we migrate in and out of people’s lives, be it in business or personal life. We owe it to our self personally to surround our soul with people who nurture our connections.”

Barb Burgie, owner Burgie MediaFusion Worthington OH

The right connections can help you be a better person and find greater joy in life. As we work to help business and teams succeed, we have learned over the years there are key relationships that help the world move and having a personal connection with a service provider in these areas can help solve most any problem you might have.

Attributes of a good connector include someone who is trustworthy, honest, well respected, influential, charitable, loving, patient and kind. Many of your friends and family are likely already providing you necessary connections but we find ensuring you have the right connectors makes for a better life! Read on for Barb’s top 5 connections every homeowner should have.

    Key Connectors:

    1. Healthcare Hero — everyone needs someone who understands the healthcare system, from billing to navigating hospitals and the care needed for loved ones. There is no greater connection than having people in your corner when you need healthcare advice. We advise friends and family to build relationships specific to their particular healthcare needs so if help is needed there is someone who can advocate and help you along the way. We also find our connections keep us healthy by keeping us informed!
    2. Financial Mastermind — the second most important connection to have in our life is someone who understands the world of finance. From bankers to financial planners, having someone who understands numbers and can help you connect the dots is critical.
    3. Home Fixer — you need someone who understands your house. Someone who can help you fix your toilet and find the right realtor when you are looking to move. The rolodex of your home fixer becomes the most important problem solver for any homeowner and that’s where you have won the lottery by having The Cleary Company on your side. They can assist with any problem you have regarding your home because they have spent 25 years building solid relationships with people you can trust.
    4. Calendar Keeper — we suggest finding a connection to someone who knows all those dates you forget. In life, we have found there is always someone who you cross paths within various scenarios who has the answer to who, what, when and where. Keep those connections close because we are all overloaded with submission dates, deadlines and birthdays. Finding the right connector for reminders is a keeper.
    5. Technology Wizard — we all need someone in our lives who can help with our IT and gadget needs to help us keep connected. If you haven’t found the right technology wizard, we suggest doing your research and to identify that right someone.

If there is an area here where you don’t have a solid connection, the team at Burgie MediaFusion is happy to help build these relationships that help you!

    Who Are Your Connections?

As you look at your business or family, do you have people who can help you navigate your way through your day? Who can you reach out to for help in one or more of these areas? Here at The Cleary Company, we truly believe our strongest connections help us to educate ourselves and our clients, give back to our community and maintain our connections with all who have come through our doors.

  • Five Pillars of Self-Care

    Five Pillars of Self-Care

ActionCOACH & The Cleary Company Make a Difference

There are those that believe success in business and leadership just takes hard work. But at The Cleary Company it is our opinion that hard work alone isn’t enough. You must make sure you are pointed in the right direction as you are working hard. It is ideal to have someone looking over your shoulder to guide you and your business along the way!  That is exactly why our Team works closely with ActionCOACH Columbus. They are a partner that helps us navigate the uncertainty of the business landscape. What that means for our design-build remodeling Clients is that we consistently work hard and smart to improve our business practices and leadership skills to be the best choice for their remodeling needs.

Below is some of the advice our Team has received from ActionCOACH.

Staying positive as a leader is essential in performing your job. To make sure you stay positive we have five pillars of self-care that we as coaches have our teams, managers and leaders all do.

    1. Consistent Learning. Make sure that you’re always growing. Our brains are built to get rid of synapses that are not needed, as an energy-saving measure, causing our cognitive functions to slip after we graduate from college or cut back our workload near retirement. A consistent habit of learning has been proven to increase life expectancy, and certainly cognitive ability in that life.
    2. Meditation. Regular meditation needs to be a part of your life. Get a meditation app or meditation audio of some kind to be able to shut your brain down just for a few minutes to recoup and recharge.
    3. Exercise. Whether you walk, run, bike, swim, lift, or dance, exercise has a positive effect on not only your body, but your brain. The endorphins released when you exercise have been proven to increase positive outlook and decrease depression.
    4. Affirmations. What you say to yourself when you’re by yourself can affect your outlook on every facet of your life. Saying out loud what you believe to be true about your present or future can reprogram your brain for positive thinking. Try things like “I am a successful leader.” or “I have great ideas that people want to hear.” It may feel uncomfortable at first to say these statements out loud but keep going.
    5. Gratitude. Start your day being grateful for what you have and where you are. One of the easiest ways to do this is a gratitude snooze. Instead of falling back asleep after your alarm goes off, take that time to think of the things that are going well in your life. Try writing in a gratitude journal, capturing why you are grateful for the people, circumstances and experiences around you. Multiple scientific studies have concluded that cultivating the habit of gratitude influences not only your mental health, but your sleep health, physical health, and health of your relationships.

Creating a positive culture starts with the leaders. In all of these positive habits, show your team the way and lead by example.

As your remodeling experts our mission is to – “Thrive on improving the happiness of our clients and the functionality of their homes through our Remodel-Design-Build experience and have fun while doing it.” We focus on this mission daily and with ActionCOACH’s insightful guidance, we are fulfilling that mission through a positive culture and being leaders in our industry. What can you do to build your leadership skills?

  • Q & A with Team Member Aaron Enfinger, CR

Q & A with Team Member Aaron Enfinger, CR

After 17 years as an interior woodworker, mostly in high-end custom homes, Aaron was ready to hang up his tool belt and move into a management role. In 2014, George was looking to hire The Cleary Company’s first true Production Manager and Aaron, with his extensive experience in carpentry, residential construction and remodeling, was a natural fit! After 3 years in that role, he was making such a huge impact on our growth it was clear he needed a promotion to General Manager and in 2020 promoted again to Chief Operations Officer. Aaron is a mastermind with numbers, charts and forecasting. He’s implemented structure, policies and procedures into our business that have made The Cleary Company a stronger Remodel Design Build firm.

After earning his Certified Remodeler (CR) accreditation thru the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), Aaron has continued to be active in the local chapter as well as serving on several committees at the national level.

Below are his reflections on the last 5 years with Our Team.

What quality has been the most important to ensuring success for The Cleary Company over the last 5 years?

Relationships. George’s vision to impact the quality of life for our clients and their families. In order to accomplish this you must find the best people you can to work with!

How has your job and its expectations changed over the years?

I have gone from being involved in every project from a production planning standpoint to making sure that our people and systems are serving us well.

What innovations have been made in the remodeling field?

Design materials have gotten high tech and most tools have gone cordless.

What design elements would you love to see come back?

Lots of wood and moldings – coffered ceilings, wainscot, detailed crown. I’m a woodworker at heart so I appreciate the craftsmanship it takes to create good looking details. Most of the popular minimalist room designs seen on HGTV, Houzz and in magazines lack the architectural detail and visual interest.

What ones should never come back?

Soffits and fluorescent light boxes! Two trends that took up too much visual space in a room and are just ugly.

How do you envision the next 25 years for The Cleary Company?

I believe we’ll continue to lead our industry through education, innovative designs, cutting edge construction materials and techniques. With our continued growth we’re looking to expand our service and product offerings.
