Reflections on 2 Years at 989 Old Henderson Rd

June 21, 2021 marks the 2 year anniversary of the ribbon cutting at The Cleary Company’s new location at 989 Old Henderson Rd in Columbus Ohio. Over 200 people attended the open house event! The guest list included clients, colleagues, family and friends. The celebration of 12 months of work completed on the design and construction of a commercial remodel for their new office and design studio.

To say that there has been significant change with TCC in this short 2-year span is an understatement. The move more than tripled the size of their previous location on Kenny Road. Not only did they gain more space to spread out as team members, but they were also able to add a fully dedicated Design Studio and Community Room-Event Space (Animal House). Furthermore, the new digs provide the company more opportunities to engage with their clients but also the community in a whole new and exciting way!

One of George Cleary’s, owner of The Cleary Company, favorite parts of the new building is the Animal House. Posthumously named in memory of late Dave “Animal” Edmonds. A fitting honor for a Lead Carpenter and giant, of The Cleary Company’s history, whose larger-than-life personality and ability to connect with clients is legendary! “We’ve been able to host many events which supports one of our key Core Values – ‘Relationship’. The Animal House has entertained many people in these short 2 years, and we look forward to the opportunity to engage with many more of our clients and friends in the years to come,” says Chief Operations Officer, Aaron Enfinger, CR.

    More Room for Continued Growth

The Cleary Company’s bath2BATH Team, created in 2018, has seen exciting changes and growth too! In January of 2021 they finished a remodel of their showroom before it hit it’s two-year anniversary! The space showcases the latest bathroom fixtures and finishes from Kohler and Cambria. The addition of several new Team members has meant a significant increase in the number of projects completed in the last 12 months. bath2BATH is creating a new way for clients to shop for bathroom remodeling. This new space and process is really resonating with The Cleary Company’s clients, both new and past!

In April of 2020 a new Team was created, Home Services by The Cleary Company. The launch was in response to the increasing demand for smaller projects while folks were spending more time at home last year. It is an expansion of the company’s offering to past clients of a pay by the hour time and material service. Projects that are smaller in scope and do not need significant design work are a perfect fit for Home Services by The Cleary Company. The flexibility of their new location at 989 Old Henderson Rd has allowed them to add staff and production capacity to assist their clients’ evolving needs!

George Cleary – Why I Ride

Pelotonia was never just about the ride. It’s always been about setting and achieving goals to fight a disease that impacts all of us. Cancer has affected everyone’s life. I can’t think of a single person I know that has not either lost someone or has been touched by this disease. That’s why I ride!

Pelotonia is truly the most enthusiastic, positive experience that I have ever been part of. My brother-in-law, Chip Greenlee, encouraged me to get involved. We rode together for many years on Stephanie Spielman’s Team of Hope Peloton. Over the last 11 years, I have had many of my friends (Tim, Adam, Sheila, Rick, Henry, just to name a few), as well as my mom, die from cancer. When my mom, Betty, lost her battle with Leukemia in 2013 I kicked up my commitment to ride on the 2-day 180-200 mile route. I wanted to show her that I could do more by grinding through a second day even though I’m tired and don’t want to get back on that little bike seat.

To honor Chip, who sadly lost his fight against Glioblastoma brain cancer last August, I made the decision to start my own Peloton, Team Cleary Cyclers. We’re Riding for Chipper!

Winners of 38 (& Counting) NARI CotY Awards!

At The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build in Columbus OH, we’re proud members of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). NARI’s Central Ohio chapter (NARI-CO) is located in the organization’s East Central Region. Each year NARI presents their Contractor of the Year (CotY) awards to it’s membership. NARI-CO local winners are announced the first Friday each December. Our first local winner was received in 2007. Since then our Team has won a total of 21 local CotY awards. A record number 6 wins were awarded in 2019 which was an extra special honor since we were also celebrating 25 years of remodeling!

The NARI Regional winners are announced each February. In 2017 we won our first East Central CotY for a whole house remodel in the $250-500k category. To view before and after photos of this project click here! Since then we have been won a total of 14 Regional CotYs including 4 in February 2021. Watch this video clip of our four East Central Region winners!

All winners from each Region move on to the National competition. They are then scored by a panel of judges who are leading experts in their field. Our Team’s first National CotY award win was in 2019 for an amazing master suite addition that included a private Zen inspired courtyard. A video of this courtyard has over 4 million views on YouTube! Watch it now. We were so excited to win 2 more National CotY awards in 2020 and our fingers are crossed for even more in 2021.

What are the NARI CotY Awards?

The CotY or Contractor of the Year awards are presented each year by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) to its members at the local, regional and national levels. Remodeling projects submitted by members have demonstrated outstanding work through their craftsmanship, problem solving and use of innovation to meet the needs of their clients. The awards recognize excellence in remodeling and with over 45 categories available, there’s a category for every sized remodeler and project.

NARI’s promise, Remodeling Done Right, is exemplified by members who submit projects for judging. Each year entrants exhibit the highest level of skill, professionalism and dedication to the remodeling industry. “For forty years, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry has celebrated the best remodeling projects in the country through our Contractor of the Year Awards competition.” says David Pekel, CEO at NARI. “These award-winning projects exemplify the pinnacle of what the professional remodeling industry represents in both craftsmanship and innovation and NARI is proud to recognize the year’s best of the best.”

3 Reasons Why CotY Awards Matter to Our Team?

The numerous marketing opportunities available to CotY winners help set our business apart from other remodeling companies, and NARI helps by providing tools and resources to make the most of this distinguished honor. “We’re proud of our association with NARI and when our projects are recognized thru the CotY awards at any level it’s an accomplishment with a great ROI”, says April Howe, Allied ASID, Marketing Coordinator for The Cleary Company. Sure the most obvious reason for winning CotY awards is marketing but beyond showing off our amazing and setting our business apart from other local remodeling companies there are 3 reasons we value our wins.

1- Motivation – Who doesn’t love friendly competition? Each award winning project at The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build was produced by many members of our Team. As part of our Team’s culture we strive as individuals to always be better but to also support each other to be better. Winning a NARI CotY award is also an extra validation from remodeling industry peers.

2- Education – When our company wins our Team benefits. Each winning entry at both the Regional and National level earn scholarship money applicable toward new certification fees. These funds help offset professional training courses for employees looking to further their remodeling knowledge. Aaron Enfinger, CR, Chief Operations Officer at The Cleary Company says, “NARI Certifications not only benefit our company’s bottom line and our Team’s professional development but also demonstrate to our clients our commitment to our industry.”

3- Recruitment – We’re always on the lookout for great industry talent. Promoting our CotY award winning projects to prospective new Team members shows we value the highest level of skill, professionalism and pride in our industry. For many remodeling professionals looking to improve their careers, searching for opportunities with the companies that are showcasing innovative and creative designs and construction is a good place to start.

Stay tuned for more award announcements! The 2021 NARI National Contractor of the Year awards will be presented via Zoom on Friday April 30th at the their annual conference.

  • Growth of Columbus Fueling Remodeling Industry

Growth of Columbus Fueling Remodeling Industry

It is exciting to see the growth and development happening all around the Columbus Metro area. At The Cleary Company we have experienced tremendous growth in the last decade as well. As we’ve seen increasing demands for remodeling, we’ve also listened to our client’s needs and wants. This has resulted in the development of two new divisions, bath2BATH in 2018 and Home Services in 2020. These new divisions of The Cleary Company compliment our Remodel-Design-Build core business model and help our Team more efficiently serve our clients’ needs.

What does the growth in Central Ohio mean for careers in home remodeling?

While all of this growth has been exciting, it has not come without its challenges. We have felt these challenges most acutely in our workforce. The growth in our industry has placed intense pressure on the existing workforce. There has been and continues to be an increased demand for finding experienced, trained craftspeople. Not only to fill our labor needs but also the needs of our skilled Trade Partners. And we have decided to do our part.

There is a gap in the representation of the 35-50 year old demographic in the skilled trades due to the Great Recession. A decade ago, many skilled tradespeople that were in the burgeoning years of a career left due to the lack of work. This is one reason for the labor shortage we now find ourselves in. Another is the false narrative that life in the skilled trades is a “vocational consolation prize” (quote credit to Mike Rowe).

While it seems that Millennials have mostly shunned the skilled trades due to this narrative and pursued college degrees to avoid it, Gen Z seems to be learning the lessons of previous generations supposed path to success. College is not for everyone, and many successful and rewarding careers do not need a college education. In addition to this understanding, debt from college has caused many to pause and consider the need for an expensive and potentially unnecessary college degree.

Opportunities for professional trade development and training.

At The Cleary Company we see the dawning of a new generation of motivated, hungry, and creative people searching out a life in the skilled trades. We have opened our doors to those searching for a meaningful and challenging career but need additional training towards building a career. Job Classifications have been created for every position in the company which gives our Team the information of knowing how to navigate and plan their career path. This also gives them ownership of setting and reaching personal goals.

There are many ways to prepare for a flourishing life, college is not the only one. Coming soon is an additional tool currently in development, a construction course. The goal? To teach the fundamentals of residential construction to those new to the remodeling industry. A Skills Punch Card will assist the apprentice craftsperson to develop the skills needed to further develop their career.

The growth of our region’s economy and therefore our industry can translate into growth for the individual; professionally and personally. This is part of the long-term strategy at The Cleary Company to solve the problems of the labor shortages in our industry. Sound interesting? Build your career with our Team, whose strategic growth is built for meeting the demands of a growing economy in Columbus.

  • Team Cleary Cyclers – Pelotonia Fundraiser

Team Cleary Cyclers – Pelotonia Fundraiser

Run – Walk – Ride – Volunteer to End Cancer

On Saturday August 22, 2020, George Cleary, owner of The Cleary Company, & Team Cleary Cyclers, hosted their ride and only fundraiser for Pelotonia 2020. The event committee spent weeks scoping out possible routes for a 5k Run / Walk along with 10, 25 & 40-mile Bike Rides to start and finish at The Cleary Company’s headquarters at 989 Old Henderson Road. George gathered a group of eager volunteers to help with serving drinks & snacks to everyone at the finish line. Appreciation and thanks go to Cambria along with the Cleary & Greenlee families for donating all of the food, drinks & supplies! 100% of the funds collected at the event will benefit Pelotonia. Check out all of the photos from the day on The Cleary Company’s Facebook page.

Kudos to all who officially registered for the Team Cleary Cyclers peloton! 4 Riders – George Cleary (captain), Cathy Cleary, George Cleary Jr, Chase Greenlee; plus 20 Virtual riders – Jan Bjornson, Joe Hamlett, John Hamlett, Angela Parker, Ron Scott, Jill Scott, Leonor Carrasco, Theresa Passwater, Jen Sommers, Maureen Cleary-Holmes, Gary Hasenkamp, Robert Raskin, Nate Traucht, Katie Florjancic, Jonathan Neely, Sarah Wilkins, Michael Foley, Tim O’Connor, Emily Scott, Susie Wroble and countless unnamed volunteers. Combined they’ve raised more than $17,400.00 this year to support cancer treatments and research in Columbus, OH.

Team Cleary Cyclers is officially 24 members strong, but we all know there are many more behind the scenes who make events like this a success. George was excited to welcome 70 enthusiastic walkers, riders and volunteers turned out to participate. A special thanks to George’s sister, Kathleen, event manager and cancer survivor!

George Cleary – Why I ride

In 2010 my brother-in-law, Chip Greenlee, encouraged me to join him riding for Pelotonia. Over the last 11 years, I have had many of my friends (Tim, Adam, Sheila, Rick, just to name a few), as well as my mom, die from cancer. Betty, my mom, lost her battle with Leukemia in 2013 and that is when I kicked up my game to begin riding the 2-day 180-200 mile event. I wanted to show her that I could do more by grinding through a second day even though I’m tired and don’t want to get back on that little bike seat. This year to honor Chip and his fight against Glioblastoma brain cancer, I made the decision to start my own Peloton, Team Cleary Cyclers. We’re Riding for Chipper!

I have optimism and hope to find better treatments and ultimately a cure! A lot of that enthusiasm is due to the leadership efforts and hard work of the Pelotonia staff but also so many more – the dedication of doctors, researchers, interns, volunteers, and those that grind out 25-200 miles every August for the journey to achieve One Goal – kicking cancer’s ass. I get goosebumps thinking of all the supporters, both financially and spiritually. I will see survivors in the country with masks on, no hair in wheelchairs at the end of their driveway ringing a cowbell to encourage each rider to “keep on pedaling”, or the guy holding his sign “thanks for saving my wife”.

This year’s ride was different, not only because of the pandemic, but because my brother-in-law passed away that same day. My passion for the continued support of Pelotonia deepened just bit more. Team Cleary Cyclers continues to raise funds through October 31, 2020 to achieve the ONE GOAL – END CANCER!
