The Anatomy of a Basement Remodel

Basements are an often-underutilized area that, when remodeled, could improve your home and how you live in it. However, understanding what it takes to remodel a basement is a topic we felt important to discuss. At The Cleary Company in Columbus, Ohio, our Remodel-Design-Build Team has collaborated to create many basement remodels. Read on to learn what Development & Design Manager, Laura Watson, ASID, UDCP, believes clients should know, think about, expect, and understand about remodeling their basements.

When should you remodel your basement?

So, how do you know you need to remodel? There are many variables to consider when determining this, and depending on what they are, the scope of the work will differ.

    • You want additional living space for a craft or hobby area, home office, workout room, or a place for the kids to play or hang out with friends.
    • You’d like to entertain more. How about a space for a custom wine cellar with a tasting room or a home bar ready for football games?
    • You need another bedroom and/or bathroom for in-laws, guests or when a kid returns during or after college.

8 things a homeowner needs to know about remodeling a basement:

    1. A basement remodel doesn’t go any faster than other remodeling projects. Supplies have to be ordered and delivered, areas must be demoed and rebuilt, permits need to be pulled, inspections completed—you get the idea. A great remodeling project takes time, no matter where it is in your home.
    2. Headroom matters! The Ohio Residential Building Code dictates the “ceiling heights in basements shall not be less than 6 feet 8 inches clear except for under beams, girders, ducts or other obstructions where the clear height shall be 6 feet 4 inches”. Ductwork might have to be moved or raised, especially in older basements. This height applies to staircases as well. In some cases, the stairway must be reworked to create the appropriate head height.
    3. To be classified as a finished basement, the space must be a walkout to the yard or have an egress window.
    4. Mechanicals (sump pump, water heater, HVAC) can be in the way of a new design plan. In cases where these mechanicals are cost-prohibitive to be moved, they can be enclosed in a separate room. Doing so often means a louvered or vented door must be installed for proper airflow.
    5. If a bedroom is in the scope of work, there must be an egress window in the room as well as a closet added for it to count as a habitable bedroom.
    6. What is the heating and cooling like in the basement? This will determine the kind of flooring installed if your basement tends to be chilly. Carpeting might be a good option if you love to be barefoot or if the space is going to be used for sleepovers and kids hanging out. If heating/cooling isn’t an issue, LVT (luxury vinyl tile) flooring is a great option.
    7. How are you going to use the space? If it’s going to be a place for kids, you might need to deaden the sound with more insulation or other soundproofing materials.
    8. Determine how you want the space utilized for your needs—a beautiful laundry room, a guest suite with a bathroom, a play area, a workout room, more storage, or a home bar. Knowing what will work for you and how YOU want to use the space determines the scope of the project and the cost.

How much does a basement remodel cost in Columbus, Ohio?

What you need to do before your project starts:

There are several things that need to be done before the construction of your remodel can begin. Knowing these ahead of time makes the whole process easier for you and your remodeler!

    • Move everything away from the walls so every area can be accurately measured during your initial meetings and trade partner inspections.
    • Purge, organize and store items someplace other than in the basement to create adequate room for carpenters and trades to complete their work. If you need help with this process, Our Team can connect you with a professional organizer.
    • Is there water damage or areas where water gets in during heavy rains? Have this remediated before your remodel begins. Again, Our Team can recommend a professional to tackle any waterproofing issues.
    • Consider adding a sump pump with a battery backup. You may not have water issues now, but they can happen to anyone at any time.
    • Assure adequate space and clearance to get furniture and supplies down into the basement.

  • Basement Remodel In Upper Arlington, OH

Basement Remodel In Upper Arlington, OH

An unused basement became a dream space for our clients, Jen and David. Our Team transformed their ranch home in Upper Arlington OH by giving them more living space with a fun space for adults and kids.

Changing their home’s basement area into a livable space included creating zones for various family activities. Our Lead Carpenter, Jonathan, even created a custom dimensional focal wall for the TV. As Jen said to us, “We are so glad we chose to work with The Cleary Company. Having our basement remodeled has really completed our home.”

    Q & A with Jen & David

What space did you have remodeled?

We had our long rectangular basement finished to create usable space for the whole family. Nothing had previously been done to the area, except for a bathroom and some old carpet. We remodeled the bathroom and turned an attached room into an exercise room. This amazing long basement offers many different spaces, including an entertainment and relaxing area complete with a couch and the TV. The new dry bar has space for a wine fridge and cabinets and shelving to hold our different bourbons. There is a built-in bookcase area complete with desks for the kids. We also have a kids’ play area with storage for their toys.

What is your favorite aspect of your remodeled space?

That’s too hard to pick! But if I had to, it would be the kids’ area. We love that there is a space for them to play that is clean, bright and safe. We didn’t plan anything special for the area, but it is great for the kids when it’s too hot or cold outside. Also, I love being able to go downstairs and spend time exercising.

Why did you choose The Cleary Company to complete your remodeling project?

We had interviewed a couple of different contractors, including The Cleary Company. Our gut told us we needed to choose The Cleary Company for our remodel. We have had issues with contractors before that made us a little more cautious. We were looking for a company that had good communication skills with us and was trustworthy. The Cleary Company filled the bill–they came across as extremely trustworthy. They laid out a plan and their communication with us was amazing.

What was your favorite part of working with The Cleary Company and why?

We loved working with their Team. Project Developer, Jayde Boyd, and Designer Katie Florjancic, were fun, easy to talk to. They made us feel comfortable about the choices we were making and how we wanted to spend our budget. There was no judgment on their parts at all, they just wanted to make sure our vision came to life. The interactions we experienced with everyone were noteworthy. To add to that, Jayde brought my son a birthday cake when we had a meeting at the house on my son’s birthday. I will always remember that as such a kind gesture to our family and my son. Working with Jonathan, the carpenter was amazing. He designed a wood accent wall where our TV hangs. He came up with a perfect one-of-a-kind design for the wall. I was home most of the time during the renovation and it was nice to have such kind, energetic and respectful people in our home.

Was there a TCC team member(s) who stood out and if yes, how did they exceed your expectations?

Jayde, Katie and Jonathan, for the reasons above and more! Jayde was so great at communicating with us and if we had any concerns we knew she would handle them right away. Katie seemed to know exactly what we were thinking. Just by seeing our style choices in our home, she knew what we wanted. It seemed like she was in my head and realized my wildest dreams for designing the rooms. Jonathan executed many amazing details in the basement. We needed custom doors and framing due to the height of the ceiling. And the way he created the wall just spoke to us.

What advice would you offer to someone who is thinking of remodeling their home?

Do your remodeling project with The Cleary Company!  Find someone who is responsive to your communication style and needs. Ask questions about what is going on during the process. Clarity and understanding every part of the process was very important to us and The Cleary Company did everything to make us comfortable.

If you were asked to explain in one word why you choose to do business with The Cleary Company, what would it be?

    Trustworthy.

    Basement Remodel | Dublin, OH

With more time than ever spent in their 4,500 sq. ft. Dublin, Ohio, home over this past year, Ryan and Leigh Ann decided they were ready for a change. A combination of small children, a walk-out basement that looks onto a nature preserve, and money saved from no vacations led to a basement remodel they will enjoy forever!

What space did you have redesigned?

Our existing walk-out basement was finished with an open area and old bar, bedroom and full bath, but lacked style and function for our needs. We have 2 young children and reimagining a whole new space allowed us to convert the bedroom to a playroom with a new 6-foot opening with 4” white trim casing. Now when we walk down the stairs, we see out the 4 large windows and through the new opening we can also see out the large glass sliding doors. We absolutely love all of the natural light that floods in our new basement remodel.

What is your favorite aspect of your remodeled space?

We love the overall flow and the lightening up of the room. The white trim, light gray walls, new lighting and more windows has created a brand-new feel for the room. Now we can all be downstairs, the kids can play and be seen, but we still have our own space as well. We love sitting in front of the new fireplace and admiring the stunning herringbone tile work surrounding it.

Why did you choose The Cleary Company to complete your basement remodel?

We had our ideas but wanted to use a remodeling company that could bring them together in a cohesive design. After meeting with The Cleary Company, we knew they would be able to create what we wanted. They made the whole process seamless. We interviewed 4 companies but knowing The Cleary Company had the design team in house and we could see the renderings before we committed to the project was a major reason we chose to work with them. We had design ideas that the team brought to life in their proposed design plan.

What was your favorite part of working with The Cleary Company and why?

We really liked seeing the progress and the interaction to make sure things were perfect. One example was when the custom bar shelves were to be mounted. The cabinets, countertop, backsplash and lighting were installed and we were at the decision point to place the shelves. The whole design team came out to help decide where they should go. They held them in different areas so we could see where we wanted them placed. We actually deviated from the original plan a bit to get them exactly in the right place. We are thankful we had the opportunity to do this. They made sure the light didn’t get blocked by altering the size of the shelf itself. We loved them coming together with us to make the right decision and be so happy with the end result.

Was there a Cleary Team member(s) who stood out and if yes, how did they exceed your expectations?

The John’s were outstanding! John Coleman was here from the start to the end and his insight and approach was top notch. John Hamlett came at the end of the project to complete some finishing touches. He saw me struggling to mount our rear speakers and I gave up for the day. I came back the next day and to my surprise, they were mounted perfectly. When I thanked him, he said it was to no problem, he took care of it while the first coat of paint dried. Things like that happened all the way through the project. Now my wife knows they were hung correctly!

What advice would you offer to someone who is thinking of remodeling their home?

Do it! With what we experienced in the last year, spending more time at home, we are so glad we did it. If you can create new space in your home, you won’t regret it. We are so thankful we did it and feel it was perfect timing. Every time we come down the stairs, we feel like we are getting away to this brand new area that we can enjoy. Go with Cleary or someone you trust that can help you along the way and make sure the end product is what you want.

If you were asked to explain in one word why you choose to do business with The Cleary Company, what would it be?

Talented! Every step of the way, from the designs to picking out materials to the implementation of the design, we worked with the best people. Everyone is very talented.

AFTER PHOTOS | FULL BASEMENT REMODEL

A transitional design style with a white and gray palette highlights the newly remodeled spaces. A cozy family room provides space for watching TV or playing games with the kids. Custom cabinets for ample storage of toys & games. Utilizing every inch of space in the basement the remodel included building a wine cellar under the basement stairs. Black framed glass windows & doors, from Wine Cellar Innovations, give a more modern feel and contrast to the custom wood racks. The mirrored sliding door covers crawl space access which hides the mechanicals for the wine cellar but also gives the client’s daughters a large mirror for playing dress up. Cooling the wine cellar is a CellarPro 3200 refrigeration unit.

The new laundry and powder rooms get several upgrades with glam and bling. LVT vinyl flooring throughout, mirrors and beveled glass wall tiles, quartz countertops, custom cabinetry with personalized storage solutions, mosaic tile backsplash, farmhouse sink & custom drying racks.

Mudroom includes custom storage for this busy family of four. Shoe Storage Galore! Our clients practice a “no shoe” household but the existing mudroom did not meet their growing family needs for storage. Their favorite feature is a tall pullout cabinet which stores shoes used less often out of the way but keeps them close when needed. The design-build plan for the space included custom cabinets of cubbies, benches, hooks & more cabinets.

    HOME DESIGN TRENDS

Home Entertaining Moving Out of the Kitchen & Into the Lounge

Basement remodel Powell Ohio Wine Room

A home remodeling trend our Team has noticed in this last year is The Home Lounge.  “Our clients are wanting a space to entertain separate from the kitchen hub”, says Laura Watson, ASID Design Department Manager.

Recent projects include a Dublin Ohio dining room remodel with lounge-like furniture (sofa & club chairs), an Upper Arlington Ohio addition with a bar, outdoor covered patio with fireplace and a folding wall of glass (Nana Door), and a Powell Ohio basement remodel turned an empty storage room into a comfortable entertainment space with a kitchenette, wine bar, game table, seating space plus a secret bookshelf door.

All of these recent projects a have similar function- bringing family and friends together! Although each is as unique as the client, the projects do all share a common design trend- using reclaimed and distressed wood. A design trend that has become very popular in the Midwest and is showing signs of huge growth especially because of the eco friendly movement. This style is all about re-purposing. The look of mixing rustic wood elements with newer softer materials started is not new, think Shabby Chic, however it has developed into a heavier more rustic style by incorporating industrial accessories or reclaimed barn wood.  A look our client dubbed “rustic lux”.
