There’s no getting around it, the bathroom is one of the most used rooms in your home. Our Team speaks daily with clients who are ready to transform their bathroom into an oasis. From a half bath or powder room to a full primary spa-like bath, the possibilities are endless, but by collaborating with our Design-Build Team, we take much of the guesswork and stress out of the picture. And we help you create a design plan that brings your vision to reality.
As always, we are watching the trends and incorporating ideas our clients have into their bathrooms. The trend forecast is showing design elements we are already utilizing and others we are excited to incorporate!
What’s Hot & What’s Next
Zero Entry or Low Curb Showers: A zero-entry shower is just that—zero entry. There is no wall or barrier to step over, making a shower easily accessible, while creating a sleek and modern look. Eliminating the curb means easy entry for all, no stubbed toes or tripping hazards. When cost-prohibitive to install another great option is a lower curb option. Both offer a sleek design that provides an accessible shower for children and those with mobility issues.
The shower and bathroom floors are one level.
Freestanding Soaker Tub: This is not a new trend, but one that continues to grow in popularity, and for good reason. Many of the bathrooms we remodel include the removal of a clunky, large built-in tub. A freestanding soaker tub is a great option for homeowners that don’t want to give up having a bathing tub but would like more room for a larger shower. They’re slimmer and take up less space, but still allow for long bubbly soaks after a hard day.
Freestanding tub creates more open floor space.
Wet Rooms: The two-in-one shower and bath concept is gaining popularity in bathrooms. A glass divider or full door encloses both a zero-entry shower, typically with multiple body sprays and showerheads and a freestanding tub. It can visually create a feel of a larger space. It really maximizes convenience and practicality for those desiring both bathing options in one bathroom. A great design choice for creating a spa-like experience!
Triple Vanity: You can’t watch a bathroom design or house hunting show without hearing the homeowners gush over a bathroom with double vanities (or wanting to remodel a bathroom to gain double vanities). But what if you have three kids using the same bathroom? We are currently remodeling a bathroom for our clients that features a triple vanity. We know this will be a game-changer for this family!
Design Rendering / 3 kids = 3 vanities
Storage: Storage, both visible and hidden, continues to be one of the most requested design changes when remodeling a bathroom. Homeowners want to display towels and other necessities or they want everything hidden. We have removed tubs not only to enlarge a shower but also to create room for more storage.
Double vanity with large drawers & built-in linen closet.
Technology: Technology, like Bluetooth showerheads and chromo-therapy lights, continue to be on-trend. More and more options come to market each year. Our clients are beginning to request the following options more and more – smart televisions, USB charging stations, and smart toilets. Just don’t forget everything you install needs to be waterproof!
And Bling!
Shower Features: A feature wall in your shower is typically filled with color and texture, drawing your eye to an exciting design element. Along with feature walls, some of our clients are requesting grout-free showers. One product we have found, Tyvarian, is very affordable, mimics the look of stone, but is grout-free, moisture and mildew resistant, and easy to clean.
Color, Color, Color: Bathroom colors are evolving to both bold and nostalgic. We are seeing cool blue shades, white (the standard classic), fun colors inspired by cotton candy and bubblegum, as well as, earthy warm tones. Neutral colors are still the choice of many of our clients, but more and more are choosing to incorporate a splash of color. Popular are blues for the vanity cabinets.

Tile: Tiles, including wood effect tiles and other organic looks are trending as well. They bring warmth and coziness to your space. Mosaic accents and detailed design tiles can make a bold statement on your walls or floor. We love seeing how a bathroom evolves, based on our clients’ tile choices!
OtherDesign Features: Floating vanities and feature lighting help a bathroom stand out and create stunning focal points, especially those with smaller footprints.

The Bathroom Remodel Experience – Our Clients Say it Best!
We can tell you about our process and how it works, but we think our clients can say it even better. Read on to see!
“The best thing was being able to go to their design studio and see what we could choose from. We aren’t people that can walk into a huge showroom and start picking items from so many options. It was nice to see just a few really great examples and build off of that to create what we wanted.”
“We liked having a dedicated project manager on site. They were onsite checking the progress and answering our questions. They’re great communicators and gave us a feeling of confidence with the process.”
“We had ideas for the look and finishes we wanted but weren’t married to it and were open to new ideas. They helped our vision become reality.”
“We met with a few companies and received some estimates, but we just weren’t pleased with what we’d heard and seen. Coincidentally, our neighbor is Aaron Enfinger, Chief Operations Officer for The Cleary Company. He had a sign in his yard and we talked with him about the process.”
“We visited their design studio too. The materials were the quality we were searching for, and we really liked the people. A key difference for us was being able to visit their office and design studio to see and touch all of the materials. The other companies we talked with had just come to the house with photos of the materials.”
“Their bathroom remodeling team made it easy for me. They came to my house, looked at the space and talked through my options. I went to the bathroom design studio to look, touch, and feel all of the components I might use in my bathroom.”
“They furnished me with the drawings, 3D pictures, and everything I needed to be informed and be part of the process. They followed it up with clear processes– timeline, costs, written documentation. I knew who the team members were and who would be in my house. They made it easy to make decisions.”
“I selected them because all of the options are on trend!”

Investing in a home remodel is a big decision. You probably have many questions. For example,
How do I find the right company to plan my design and construct my project?
How much do I need to budget for my project?
What selections do I need to make?
What will my home be worth after my remodel is completed?
At The Cleary Company, our Design-Build Team collaborates with clients to determine their needs and wants for their home. Our goal? To create the vision for you that fits your budget, desires, and plans, all while giving you the best experience and value, executed by experienced craftsman.
We truly care about your remodeling experience! After all, we’ve been doing it here in Columbus, OH and throughout central Ohio for over 27 years.
When planning your home remodel, there are many factors to consider. Depending on your wants and needs, we will give you options and discuss potential costs for your project. Calculating costs requires knowing first the design, the scope and size of the project and the type of renovation you want to do.
When we begin discussions with clients about their projects, the first topic revolves around the scope of the project. Our Design-Build Team is well-versed in all scenarios!
Does it involve a refresh or do you need to change the form and function of the space?
Do you need to add a room, a 2nd floor, an outdoor living area, or take an existing home back to the original foundation and rebuild?
Researching Home Remodeling Costs
To find some answers to your budget questions, we recommend reviewing Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs Value Report. This annual publication is helpful for finding average remodeling costs in Columbus OH and many other cities and regions around the country. It also provides additional information on different building projects and their expected ROI.
To help you get started planning your kitchen, bathroom, home addition, or exterior renovation, our Design Team has assembled some projects to help guide you in your research. Each project is different and while we can’t give you a set budget before we talk with you, we do invite you to read these varying project examples and approximately priced budgets for some of our more popular renovation projects.

Home Additions
A new home addition differs from a remodel of an existing room in a home. Columbus, OH home additions typically add new square footage and require everything from the floor up to the roof. This includes the foundation, walls, ceiling, and roof as well as mechanical systems like electrical, plumbing and heating. Because you are adding something instead of changing a space that already exists, costs can vary greatly. What type of room will you be adding? Will new utilities be required? Perhaps not for a sunroom but definitely for a new bathroom. There are also many other variables, including permits, trade prices and material costs.
Adding a room to your home might be just what you need to allow you to stay in the home. Do you need more space for your children, is it time for a new owner’s suite bedroom and ensuite bath, is it time to open up walls and create a new layout, are you planning on aging in place or do you just need more room?
With new home inventory low, many people are choosing to stay in their homes and expand their footprint. Others are moving to a new-to-them home but choosing to immediately remodel the home to make it function and flow better. Whatever the case, we are a remodeling company for a reason–people want to stay in their homes in their favored neighborhoods, but require changes to the home.
Below are 3 budget ranges and 3 possible scopes to help you decide what your home addition remodeling project might cost.
Upscale – Single or 2 story addition + whole house remodel

They say, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression”. Do us a favor and walk outside right now. Stand at the curb and look at the front of your home. Like what you see? No? It could be time to renovate the exterior of your home!
The importance of curb appeal cannot be understated. Ask any realtor and they will tell you that the first impression of a home is tantamount to success in whether a client will even enter the home. If you pull up to your home and grimace, what are others seeing when they come to visit? We understand, it’s a big undertaking, but our Design Team can walk you through many options to make your home look beautiful again. Are you ready to say goodbye to spending time in a dull, ordinary bathroom and hello to transforming your daily routine into a luxurious, rejuvenating experience? Remodeling your bathroom allows you to customize the space by filling it with unique features.
The Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus, Ohio is ready to collaborate and create the bathroom of your dreams that you’ll never want to leave. What can you do to elevate your bathroom experience? The sky’s the limit! Choose one or all of these ideas for your bathroom remodel to create a space designed to fit your needs.
Showers
Upgrade to a digital shower system. These digital thermostatic valves allow you to preset controls for multiple users that you can activate from your smartphone or with voice commands. Set your perfect temperature, ideal water pressure, multiple body sprays and shower heads, and even music. Check out our Team’s favorites from Kohler.
Install additional showerheads. A large shower can handle a rain showerhead, a handheld wand, and body sprays. You see where we are ging here—more is more!
Incorporate hydro, aroma, chroma and/or audio therapies into your bathing experience.
Create a wet room. This design is a tiled space partially or fully open that involves putting the freestanding tub in the same space with a separate shower.
Check out these fabulous shower examples below!
Toilets
Go beyond the toilet by adding a bidet. Toto & Kohler make it easy to get both in one unit or upgrade your existing toilet with a new seat that includes bidet functionality. Features include preset or custom controls for water pressure, temperature, air-drying features, and heated seats.
Newer toilet models are sleek and come in one- or two-piece options, floor or wall-mounted, two heights, and come in two basic bowl shapes-round or elongated. Endless size options are available to fit any space.
Lighting
Mood lighting is trending, and we love it! Smart LED lighting that changes colors and brightness levels creates the mood you want—relaxation, rejuvenation, or getting ready for work or going out vibes.
A layered approach to lighting is important in any room but especially in a bathroom remodel. Task lights are targeted for details (think putting on makeup and shaving). Ambient lighting creates an overall uniform light level in the room. Accent lights can be the bling or art piece of the bathroom (chandelier over the tub or a beautiful wall sconce) as well as highlight an object, or just add some visual interest.
A Few More Ideas!
Lighted mirrors and medicine cabinets provide ample task lighting but also brighten up the entire space.
Fluffy, thick, high-quality, absorbent towels are dreamy and decadent.
Warm towels! Add a heated towel bar or rack.
How about heated flooring? No more chilly toes!
Incorporating nature brings a sense of calm and boosts your mood and well-being. Add some green plants (a vertical garden?) river stones or water features.
Select eco-friendly products and fixtures like low-flow toilets, water-saving faucets, sustainable materials, or LED lighting.
Innovative storage ideas such as hidden cabinets, built-in shelving, hidden niches, open shelving, and more elevate the space.
Add seating with a small bench or chair. Giving you a seat to put on lotion, give yourself a pedicure or maybe just to sit and hide from the kids.
Elevate your bathroom experience with smart technologies, cutting-edge design options, and wellness-oriented amenities. Contact our Client Relations Coordinator today and say farewell to your ordinary bathroom! Call 614-459-4000 or visit our website.
Small Bathroom, Big Potential – Bathroom Remodeling Solutions in Columbus, Ohio.
Do you have a small bathroom? While totally serviceable, a small bathroom can be made better with a few tweaks and changes (or a complete renovation). The Development Team at The Cleary Company has created many unique and creative solutions when remodeling small bathroom footprints. Sometimes it’s just not possible to add square footage to a bathroom, but it doesn’t have to look cluttered or feel cramped. It is possible to create space, storage, and openness.

Design Details to Consider:
Using pocket or “barn style” sliding doors instead of swinging doors. If using a pocket door isn’t possible in your current space, reversing the existing door so that it swings out will give you space to move around.
Keep as much off the floor as possible to keep the room open. Consider a wall-hung toilet, a floating vanity, or wall storage, instead of cabinet storage.
Large tiles with minimal grout lines or tiles running in a diagonal pattern give the illusion of a larger room. Additionally, running wall tiles all the way to the ceiling draws your eye up and makes the room feel higher.
Keep it simple with soft, natural, neutral shades. A light color palette will create the appearance of a larger bathroom, but don’t be afraid to add a splash of dark or bold color for drama as an accent. If you choose a darker color, add pops of light, bright neutrals with the fixtures, countertops, and towels. Ultimately, color is such a personal choice.
Maybe it’s time for a wet room—with a spa shower and freestanding tub in the same space or eliminating the bathtub completely!
If you really must have a tub but need to save on space, choose a shower/tub combo and use a curved shower curtain rod.
Use compact fixtures designed for small spaces. Our Design Consultants can help source in-stock and custom pieces from a wide variety of suppliers in our network.
Lighting Matters:
The right lights will make a room feel larger.
Layer the lighting with under cabinet lights, mounted wall sconces, overhead recessed cans and illuminated medicine cabinets will create a mood or style and will cut down on shadows.
Magical Mirrors:
Strategically placed mirrors create the illusion of space, reflect light, and brighten up bathrooms, especially in bathrooms without windows.
Use a large mirror above the sink or one on a medicine cabinet. If there is a window, strategically place a mirror to bounce natural light around the room.
Install a beautiful, mirrored recessed medicine cabinet above the sink with a door that slides up like in the photo below!
Go vertical with floor-to-ceiling shelving and cabinets. Bathroom essentials, towels, and toiletries are within reach but not taking up valuable square footage.
Adding built-in or better yet floating shelves above the toilet is another way to save space in a small footprint.
Recessed niches in the walls whether in the shower, above the toilet or near the vanity also save valuable space within a small bathroom.
Install the largest vanity that will fit maximum drawer storage.
Towel bars and hooks on the back of a bathroom door can free up any available wall space for shelving.
Custom storage solutions like pull-out makeup mirrors, in-drawer outlets, and divided drawers will keep all your toiletry needs from cluttering the countertops.

Planning a remodeling project is exciting! You’ve been thinking about the room or rooms you want to change, you’ve probably been binge watching some renovating shows, looking through home magazines or scrolling through Pinterest, and dreaming. But now it’s time for the nuts and bolts of the plan—choosing the right remodeler to make your dream a reality.
The Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus, Ohio is ready to create your vision and we want to help you hire the right company for you! The following eight steps should help guide your research to find the best company for your home remodel.
8 Step Guide
Define your project: It’s important to start by clearly defining your project. The scope of the work, your goals, budget, timeline, and any specific requirements and preferences are the first steps to think about. Knowing these allows you to articulate your thoughts and ideas to potential remodeling companies.
Ask for recommendations: Many times, asking friends, neighbors, or colleagues for company recommendations is an effective way to start your search. Who better than those that have been through a project to give you their thoughts? Checking the company websites for reviews is a good unbiased referral as well. From these recommendations, create your shortlist.
Do your research: With your recommended companies in mind, visit their websites, and explore their project profiles, photo galleries, and testimonials. When looking at their websites, find those that fit with your project idea and have a successful company. Another useful resource is the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). A NARI professional remodeling contractor is bound to a code of ethics that holds them to a higher standard of professionalism, integrity and excellence.
Check licenses and insurance: We’ve all heard horror stories of companies starting work and not finishing or taking the money and not doing the work. A reputable company is properly licensed and insured and can be verified by local authorities. Licensing does vary by state, so ensure they have the correct licenses and certifications.
Schedule a consultation: Now take your shortlist and schedule appointments. During the meeting, discuss your intended project’s details, ask questions, and pay attention to their communication skills, expertise, and professionalism. Who are you most comfortable with having in your home? Ask to tour their job sites, office, showroom or design center.
Request references: A remodeling company should have references readily available from their past clients for you to contact. Call them and ask questions about their experiences, the quality of the work, how issues were handled, and how communication was between the client and the company.
Develop a project proposal: Choose the company you feel is the best match for your family and project. Enter into a Design Agreement or request a written proposal or quote that includes the general project scope options, timeline of the project, and estimated costs.
Sign the contract: After finishing the project development process request a contract that includes a detailed proposal with drawings, a scope of work, materials to be installed, project price and payment terms.

Working from home most days gives you a different perspective of your home. What works, what doesn’t and what really needs to be updated. Jen and Tom hired The Cleary Company to modify their primary en suite, refresh their kitchen and create better functionality for their basement bar. What was their experience like working with our Remodel-Design-Build Team? Read on to find out!
Client Profile: Q & A with Jen & Tom
What was the goal for your remodel?
Our goal for the remodel was to refresh our primary en suite, kitchen, and basement bar. The bathroom required a full remodel because the layout needed better functionality. We painted the cabinets in the kitchen and replaced a backsplash—a simple change with a big impact. The 1960s bar was replaced to create an industrial pub feel.
What is your favorite aspect of your remodeled space?
Our favorite is the bar design. While new and unique, the bar blends in with the existing rec room. The copper main bar top and the live-edge walnut back counter along with the waterfall effect on the knee wall is an eye-catcher.
What advice would you offer to someone who is thinking of remodeling their home?
Of course, during a remodel, you have to be prepared for the disruption in your home for the duration of the project. The Cleary teams were great about tidying up every day, but construction is a dusty process. If you are remodeling a home that’s 50+ years old, you need to be prepared for surprises. Be ready to make adjustments in plans and timelines because changes will happen.

The Cleary Company Remodel Difference
Why did you choose The Cleary Company to complete your remodeling project?
We chose The Cleary Company because they just seemed to understand our goal and budget. Their designers listened to our needs and made suggestions that were in line, instead of pushing to make the projects bigger than they needed to be.
What was your favorite part of working with The Cleary Company and why?
My favorite part was the people. Every person on our project team was so kind and fun to be around. We both work from home so we were around a lot. We got to know our project team pretty well. Fantastic people!
Who from our Team stood out and how did they exceed your expectations?
Of my goodness, can I name everyone? Jen Sommers designed our kitchen and bar. It turned out amazing! The design of our bathroom project was so simple. We made some choices to determine our style, then BOOM! selections done.
Don Holmes and his apprentice Tristan were so fun to work with. Don does great work, and he’s a patient teacher! This isn’t his first rodeo. Eric Coleman is a master craftsman. No question that Eric’s projects were going to look perfect! And last but not least, Matt Ames is a gold-star project manager. There were so many balls in the air at any one time, with the subs and internal teams. He kept it all straight and us informed the whole time.
Just for Fun!
If you were asked to explain in one word why you choose to do business with The Cleary Company, what would it be?
We didn’t know when we chose The Cleary Company, but after our projects were complete we would definitely say ‘Quality’. Quality process. Quality work. Quality people. Which results in a quality experience.
Would you recommend The Cleary Company? Yes!

The bathroom – a room we can’t live without. Now more than ever we want our bathrooms to fit our needs, provide is an escape or refuge and look beautiful. One way to accomplish this is with a new coat of paint! Bathroom design forecasts are using these words describe them – tranquil, inviting, reset, calming, earthy, and spa-like – suggesting a theme of wellness for both body and mind.
Whether it’s for the kids’ bathroom, a powder room, or the en suite retreat of your dreams, choosing a paint color can seem a bit intimidating for most of us. At The Cleary Company, our Remodel-Design-Build Team are well-versed in selecting the perfect paint colors, providing our clients with options to fit the style of their remodeled spaces.
Each year brings new launches of color palettes and we research what’s trending, although some colors continue to be classics. For 2023, the focus is on sandy beiges, warm ochres and dusky browns. Earthy tones that are timeless. As one of our preferred vendors, we look to Sherwin-Williams for their top picks for the new year.
Bathroom paint colors to consider by category:
Neutrals:
They are always a pleasing choice with timeless hues and their ability to pair with vibrant color accents. Within neutrals, specifically whites, creams, and grays, the sky’s the limit for choices. But, a common mistake made is believing neutrals are only light colors. Don’t be afraid to choose darker hues of neutral colors to create moody, meditative or sophisticated bathrooms.
Sherwin-Williams’ color of the year is Redend Point SW 9081. Minimal, calming, intriguing, this warm earthy hue is grounded in earthiness and serenity and is a stylish choice in any room.

Modern Gray SW 7632 is another appealing selection for a warm neutral or try Silverpointe SW 7653

Why not embrace a combination of neutrals for highlighting architectural details. Extra White SW 7006, On the Rocks SW 7671, and Alabaster SW 7008 combine to create a timeless look in this traditional cottage style bathroom alcove below.

Greens:
Bring the outdoors in by capturing nature with green hues. Inspire yourself to try something new with the colors you choose. A color our designers love is Fresh Eucalyptus SW 9658. You’ll feel like you stepped into nature with this gorgeous color. For a bolder statement you might try Forever Green SW 9653, it’s earthy and modern.

Blues:
When we think of the perfect blue, one of our favorite bathroom projects comes to mind. This primary en suite project located in Upper Arlington, Ohio features Embellished Blue SW 6749 on the walls. A bright color that is playful and refreshing. It pairs beautifully with the blue iridescent mosaic tile accents in the shower on the vanity’s backsplash.

Other blue hues trending? Bold and rich like Perfect Periwinkle SW 9065 or Adriatic Sea SW 6790, or for a timeless, yet modern look, check out Dew Drop SW 9641. They are all great options to consider for your bathroom.
Yellows:
A bright yellow is perfect for a child’s bathroom and warm yellows can be perfect powder room accents. Consider Tarnished Trumpet SW 9026 for it’s gorgeous mustard color or Limón Fresco SW 9030 if a brighter cool tone is desirable. Both offer a timeless vintage feel. While Moonraker SW 6701 is more mellow and serene and perfect for a tranquil spa-like space.
