First Determine Your Needs
- Do you need more space for entertaining family or friends?
- Does your family do a lot of gaming?
- Will you need space for serving food and/or drinks?
- Does a beverage bar make sense?
- What audio-visual tech components do you see incorporating?
Once you have determined your needs, a floor plan can be created to help choose the right furniture, glasses and drink accouterments, TV, or gaming systems that will work in the space.

Next, Create Zones & Versatility

Determine your zones based on the needs you identified above. For example, for family entertainment, you might have a seating area, a media area and a bar area. Use furniture and area rugs to visually separate the spaces. Consider modular furniture that can be moved around and tables or ottomans that can double as storage. Seating should be comfortable and fit the activities planned for the space.

Don’t Forget to Plan for Lighting & Storage

How do you want to enhance the atmosphere of the room or the different zones? Combining layers of light that use specific types such as task, ambient, and accent will make all the difference. Even hanging string lights can create a fun atmosphere, especially if the room is going to be used for parties. A high-quality television, surround sound, gaming consoles, music and an internet source (think Alexa or Google Nest) will take the entertainment to the next level. Perhaps there are board games, a pool table, cards, a karaoke machine, or a poker table as part of the plan. Make these accessible to guests and your family for fun nights spent at home. The layout is paramount here to take advantage of optimal viewing and accessibility.

The Home Bar

One of the most requested components to a basement, kitchen, family, or dining room remodel is a bar or beverage station. A dry bar is the simplest configuration. This typically includes cabinetry and shelving for storage and a countertop for serving. There may or may not be cold storage for drinks like a mini fridge or fridge drawer. A wet bar typically means that there is a sink with running water in the space as well as having all the components of a dry bar.

Adding a bar to your entertainment hub keeps everything in one place for you and your guests. A refreshment area is a great idea, whether it’s a bar cart, a built-in bar cabinet, or a dedicated countertop with space for storing and serving.

Add Your Finishing Touches

Finally, add personality to make your new space inviting and cozy. Use a bold color for the walls or hang a bold piece of art. National Awards For Remodeling & Company Culture
The month of April not only brings showers but for George Cleary it’s also his birthday and the month he launched The Cleary Company! In addition to celebrating 29 years of remodeling in Columbus, OH, George and his Remodel-Design-Build Team are also celebrating two new national awards in 2023.

The first was on March 10th, when the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) announced their annual Contractor of the Year (CotY) awards in an online presentation. The second award came on April 5th at ActionCoach’s BizX America conference in Nashville TN.

NARI CotY Awards

The 2023 National winning project was in the category for Residential Exterior $100,000 to $200,000. The project, an Outdoor Living Space that included a screened porch addition, was designed and built for past clients for their newly purchased home.

The new covered outdoor space is perfect for the family of four to spend time relaxing, entertaining, and enjoying the gorgeous views of the adjacent and newly constructed backyard patio and pool. Features include full-height screens with sliding doors, beam and shiplap ceiling, gas fireplace, beverage bar with 2 mini fridges and storage, seating space and separate dining area, including a simple but functional outdoor kitchen.

What is a CotY Award?

The prestigious Contractor of the Year (CotY) awards are presented each year by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. NARI members who demonstrate outstanding design and craftsmanship through their remodeling projects are chosen to be category winners in local, regional and national competitions. Members can nominate their projects thru an online portal for blind judging by industry peers selected by NARI executives.

CotY award-winning remodeling projects demonstrate exceptional design and craftsmanship in renovation. A diverse and impartial panel rates each project based on 5 criteria.
- To what degree were the expressed needs of the client met?
- To what degree does the project enhance the existing structure functionally?
- Is there evidence of superior craftsmanship?

- Was there any innovative use of materials and/or methods of construction used in the project?
Projects entered into the National CotY competition are eligible for Regional awards among 48 categories in 7 regions nationwide. The National CotY awards are selected from the Regional winners in each category.

Biz X Awards Presented by ActionCOACH

For the second time in 3 years, George accepted the award for Best Company Culture on behalf of The Cleary Company. The first win was in 2020. This is also his and the company’s third honor overall from BizX. In 2022 the company also earned Best Community Impact/Corporate Responsibility.

An outdoor kitchen takes meal prep up a notch because cooking on a grill is just that much more fun, right?

Health benefits

In addition to the benefits of communing with nature mentioned above, backyards should be an oasis, a place to unwind, relax, and unplug. Creating some areas with some privacy brings the ability to unwind to a whole new level. Sitting in the dappled sunlight for a bit gives us some Vitamin D and a sense of well-being (just don’t forget the sunscreen). Spending time in our yards probably means there’s a bit of exercise happening—playing with the kids, landscaping, or playing some cornhole, outside=exercise. One more health benefit? Pro Tips for Fixing Minor Drywall Issues
Accidents happen. Whether it was a water leak, an errant toy that left a dent or a small hole, a gymnastic routine with a foot through the wall, or just everyday wear and tear. Often it’s the walls in your home that take the abuse resulting in drywall issues needing to be fixed.

While our Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company encourages you to hire professionals to fix the larger, more involved damage (unless you are an experienced DiY homeowner), it makes sense for you to repair smaller issues yourself.

But how does one go about repairing drywall issues?

Tools & Materials

Drywall patch kits are sold in most home improvement stores, like Home Depot, and contain most of what you need for small repairs. Or create your own with the following items.
- Joint compound, drywall mud, or spackle – Look for quick-drying options.
- 3 to 4-inch putty knife.
- Mesh if the hole is larger than a ½ inch.
- A boxcutter is a good item to use to keep the area neat and free from frayed edges of drywall. A clean cut leaves fewer bumps.
- A dust mask is a good idea to wear when sanding the drywall compound.
3 Types of Small Drywall Repairs & How to Do Them

Dents & Dings
- Scrape any loose debris from the area.
- Spread a thin layer of fast-drying spackle over the area, creating a level layer with the drywall.
- Let it dry then sand and apply touch-up paint.
Popped Nail Heads
- Add a drywall screw above and below the popped nail head and secure the screw to the drywall. This will keep the existing nail head from popping out again.
- Sink the screws far enough below the drywall surface to allow spackle to be applied.
- Drive in the popped nail with a hammer.
- Cover the nail and screws with a thin coat of spackle, allow to dry, sand, and apply touch-up paint.
Holes
- Buy a patch kit and put the self-adhesive mesh patch over the hole.
- Cover the patch with spackling (joint) compound in a thin crisscross pattern, and thin the edges so it blends with the wall and doesn’t create a rough demarcation line.
- Let dry and reapply if more is needed.
- Sand smooth and paint. Depending on the size of the hole, you might have to repaint the whole wall.
- A bigger hole requires a few more steps beyond these and since there is more involved, we encourage you to use a repair person or watch some YouTube videos to learn the steps. You’ll need more tools for this as well!

5 Trends for Your Kitchen That are Here to Stay
Kitchens are the heart of the home and one of the most requested remodeling projects our Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus, OH completes every year. While the options, designs, and finishes are plentiful, there are some kitchen trends that are enduring and most often desired by our clients.

Design – As far as space planning, the open-concept kitchen floorplans aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. The open floor plan is still the most requested, with sightlines and entertaining at the top of the list.
- While colored cabinets are trending now, the “white” kitchen is timeless and here to stay in the Midwest.
- Create warmth in varying degrees based on timeless color palettes keeping it crisp and clean or light and airy.

Different materials and finishes can be personalized to an individual’s taste from appliances and cabinets to paint colors and storage. Over the last few years requests for home offices have significantly increased. We’re continuing to share information from the 2022 Remodeling Impact Report from The National Association of Realtors® (NAR) Research Group and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). Where do you do your laundry? Many older homes in the Columbus, Ohio area have the washer and dryer tucked away in the basement, which isn’t very functional for today’s busy families! The Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company collaborates with our clients, to develop a floorplan and create a home that compliments their lifestyles.

We’re diving into the information from the 2022 Remodeling Impact Report from The National Association of Realtors® (NAR) Research Group and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). According to this study, Americans spent $420 billion in 2020 remodeling their homes. Remodeling a laundry room is a game changer for improving livability and functionality in the home!

What the Report tells us about Laundry Room Remodels

NAR utilizes a Joy score for each project based on happiness. The Joy score for a laundry room remodel is a 9.5/10! We know that our clients are certainly filled with joy after seeing this project completed! 68% of consumers would have undertaken this project, regardless of the pandemic.

The most important results?
- 60% of those polled report better functionality and livability now that they have created or upgraded their laundry room.
