  • How a Remodel Unites Your Family

How a Remodel Unites Your Family

A recent story in The Wall Street Journal caught our attention. Families across the country are reimagining basements, bonus rooms, and underused areas of their homes to help their kids unplug and reconnect. These renovations, often sparked by a desire to reduce screen time, are yielding surprising results. More time spent with family, deeper creativity, and a space that everyone uses.

At The Cleary Company, we’ve noticed the same trend taking root here in central Ohio. Parents aren’t just looking for more storage or better organization — they’re seeking spaces that support connection, learning, and real-life fun.

The National Shift Toward Screen-Free Zones

The rise in home play spaces is part of a bigger shift in how families are thinking about their homes. The recent WSJ article highlighted parents who were motivated to remodel specifically because of how much time their children were spending on screens. (Some averaging up to 7 hours a day!) These parents saw physical space as part of the solution.

    And it’s working.

Families are finding that by investing in playful, engaging environments, they’re not just giving their kids an alternative to screens — they’re creating a magnet for connection. The remodeled rec rooms and hangout hubs are pulling kids away from devices, bringing siblings together, and making family movie nights or spontaneous dance parties a regular part of the week.

From Trend to Real Life in Central Ohio

“We’re definitely seeing more families come to us with a vision of a space that encourages unplugging and playing — not just for the kids, but for everyone,” says Laura Watson, Development Manager, ASID, UDCP at The Cleary Company. “It’s about building something that invites interaction — from puzzles and games to crafts and reading nooks.”

Here in Columbus and across central Ohio, this national trend is taking shape in personal, customized ways. We can help families:

    • Transform basements into vibrant, multi-zone playrooms with space for movement, creativity, and lounging
    • Reimagine formal living rooms into hybrid learning and play spaces
    • Add reading lofts, art nooks, and built-in storage that’s both stylish and practical

And while every design is unique, they all share one goal: to create a space that feels like a “yes”. Yes to mess, yes to movement, yes to being together.

More Than Just a Room for the Kids

When people think “playroom,” they often imagine bright primary colors and toy bins. But the reality can be so much more thoughtful and elevated — and more integrated into your home’s overall design.

“Play spaces can be intentional and beautiful,” Laura explains. “You can create a room that grows with your kids, fits your style, and adds value to your home — emotionally and financially.”

These remodeled spaces bring lasting benefits:

    • Encouraging creativity – Spaces designed for art, music, building, or make-believe help kids explore and express themselves.
    • Promoting physical activity – From soft floors to mini rock walls, design can invite movement even indoors.
    • Building family culture – These rooms become a place to laugh, talk, and spend time away from the pull of digital devices.
    • Evolving over time – A well-designed space can start as a toddler zone and transition into a teen lounge, study space, or guest suite.

    Your Space, Your Story

Every family is different, which is why every project starts with a conversation. What does your day-to-day look like? What do your kids gravitate toward? What kinds of memories do you want to create?

Once we understand your family’s rhythm, we help shape a space that supports it. Using our proven design-build process to keep the project on time, on budget, and full of collaboration.

    Ready to Reimagine Your Space?

We love helping central Ohio families transform their spaces — not just to look better, but to live better. And sometimes, it starts with something as simple — and powerful — as play.

If you’ve been dreaming of a place where your kids can unplug, explore, and grow — we’d love to help make that vision real. Whether it’s a full basement renovation or a flex space that needs purpose, we’re ready to design something meaningful with you.

  • Transforming Your Primary Bathroom into a Serene Retreat

Transforming Your Primary Bathroom into a Serene Retreat

Start and End Your Day in Luxury: Imagine yourself in a tranquil, spa-like oasis—right in your own home. As our clients increasingly prioritize wellness and self-care, their primary bathrooms are being transformed into luxurious retreats that promote relaxation and rejuvenation. From steam showers and saunas to aromatherapy and wet rooms, today’s bathroom remodeling trends are all about crafting a calming, Zen-inspired atmosphere.

Katie Florjancic, UDCP, Designer at The Cleary Company in Columbus, Ohio, shares her insights on these emerging trends: “A well-designed bathroom can become a personal sanctuary. It’s about more than aesthetics; it’s about creating a space that supports your well-being.”

7 features to consider when remodeling your primary bathroom into a retreat-like haven.

    1. Steam Showers: The Ultimate Relaxation Experience

Steam showers are becoming a must-have feature in modern bathroom remodels. These enclosed spaces use a steam generator to produce warm, soothing mist, offering both physical and mental health benefits.

“Steam showers are perfect for relieving stress and promoting muscle relaxation,” explains Florjancic. “They’re especially popular among clients who want that spa-like experience without leaving home.”

In addition to relaxation, steam showers can improve circulation, clear sinuses, and promote healthier skin. Advanced systems often include built-in aromatherapy, chromotherapy, and Bluetooth sound systems, creating a fully immersive sensory experience.

Design Tip: Opt for materials that retain heat, like natural stone or tile, and ensure the enclosure is properly sealed to maximize steam retention.

    2. Saunas: Heat Therapy at Home

Home saunas have gained popularity as people recognize the wellness benefits of heat therapy. Saunas help with detoxification, circulation, and stress relief—all while offering a cozy retreat from daily life.

“Incorporating a sauna into your bathroom design doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style or space,” says Florjancic. “There are sleek, compact options that integrate beautifully into the overall design.”

Traditional wood-paneled saunas remain a favorite, but infrared saunas, which use light to generate heat, are also on the rise. Infrared models are energy-efficient and heat up quickly, making them an ideal addition to modern homes.

Design Tip: If space allows, consider a combination sauna/steam room to maximize the therapeutic benefits of both.

    3. Aroma, Chroma, & Sound Therapy: Engage Your Senses

Aromatherapy has long been associated with relaxation and wellness, and now it’s finding a permanent place in primary bathrooms. Essential oil diffusers can be integrated into steam showers or installed as standalone features to release calming scents like lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint.

“Aromatherapy adds an extra layer of tranquility,” Florjancic explains. “It engages the senses in a subtle but powerful way, helping to create that ‘zen’ feeling we all crave.”

Chromotherapy, also known as, color therapy, uses color to improve physical and mental health. It is based on the belief that different colors have specific healing properties. Not only can it help relieve stress and anxiety but it can also boost your energy levels by stimulating blood flow throughout the body. It’s excellent for detoxifying as well.

Design Tip: Choose a system that allows for easy scent customization, so you can switch aromas based on your mood or needs.

    4. Wet Rooms: Open-Concept Luxury

Wet rooms offer a sleek, modern solution for creating a spa-like atmosphere. These fully waterproofed spaces typically combine a shower and a freestanding tub in an open-concept design, eliminating the need for shower doors or curtains.

“Wet rooms can make even a small bathroom feel more spacious,” says Florjancic. “They create a seamless, open environment that enhances both function and style.”

Beyond aesthetics, wet rooms improve accessibility and are easier to clean due to their minimalist design.

Design Tip: Use slip-resistant tiles and strategically place drains to prevent water pooling.

    5. Heated Elements: Warmth and Comfort

Few things are as comforting as stepping onto a warm floor on a chilly morning. Radiant floor heating, heated towel racks, and warming drawers for robes are simple yet luxurious additions.

“These elements might seem like small details, but they make a big difference,” says Florjancic. “Clients always rave about how these features elevate their daily routines.”

Design Tip: Pair heated floors with programmable thermostats to ensure energy efficiency.

    6. Natural Materials and Calming Colors

The use of natural materials like wood, stone, and bamboo adds warmth and texture to bathroom designs. Earthy tones, soft neutrals, and organic textures create a soothing atmosphere.

“We love incorporating natural materials whenever possible,” Florjancic shares. “They’re timeless, elegant, and inherently calming.”

Popular choices include marble countertops, teak benches, and matte black or brushed gold fixtures for a modern touch.

Design Tip: Add greenery with potted plants or a small vertical garden to enhance the natural aesthetic.

    7. Smart Technology: Convenience Meets Relaxation

Bathroom technology has evolved significantly, with smart mirrors, digital shower controls, and voice-activated lighting systems becoming common features.

“Smart technology helps simplify routines,” says Florjancic. “Imagine stepping into a shower that’s already at your preferred temperature or adjusting lighting with a simple voice command.”

From Bluetooth speakers for calming music to toilets with built-in bidets and heated seats, these features blend convenience with luxury.

Design Tip: Ensure that all technology is moisture-resistant and user-friendly.

    Your Personal Sanctuary Awaits

A well-designed primary bathroom can serve as a daily escape from life’s stresses. By incorporating steam showers, saunas, aromatherapy, and other luxury features, you can create a space that promotes relaxation and enhances your overall well-being.

As Florjancic concludes, “Your bathroom should be a place where you feel completely at ease. With thoughtful design and the right features, you can transform it into a true personal retreat.”

  • A Basement Remodel Rooted in Nature and Wellness

A Basement Remodel Rooted in Nature and Wellness

Turning a basement into a dream space is an exciting challenge, especially when it’s all about blending functional and personal touches. For a millennial family with a passion for plants and yoga, their previously underutilized basement space became the perfect canvas to create an “experience home” by incorporating elements of biophilic design. Let’s dive into how this transformation came to life with some creative and highly personalized design choices by Emily Perebzak, UDCP at The Cleary Company.

    What’s an “Experience Home” Anyway?

Think of the “experience home” as creating spaces that go beyond just looking good. It’s about designing rooms that feel good to live in—places where you can practice yoga, host friends, and even grow your favorite plants. Instead of just filling rooms with stuff, it’s about crafting spaces that fit your lifestyle. This idea shaped every inch of the basement, from multifunctional spaces to cozy corners for relaxation.

Bringing Nature Indoors with Biophilic Design

If you love plants and crave a connection to nature, biophilic design might just be your jam. It’s all about weaving natural materials, greenery, and light into your home to create a calming vibe. This basement redesign went all in on these principles, creating a fresh and rejuvenating environment perfect for yoga sessions and quality family time.

The Design Details That Make it Shine

Emily sprinkled magic throughout this basement remodel with thoughtful, functional, and stylish design choices. Here are the highlights:

    1. White Oak Quarter Sawn Cabinetry

White oak isn’t just beautiful; it’s built to last. The quarter sawn cut—a technique where the log is cut into quarters and sliced—brings out a stunning straight grain pattern. Plus, it’s super durable. “This method not only adds a sleek look but ensures the cabinetry can handle daily wear and tear,” Emily explains. Bonus: it’s a timeless choice that’ll never go out of style.

Emily also customized the cabinetry to suit the family’s needs, adding built-in storage for their yoga mats and plant care tools. This thoughtful touch ensures the space is as practical as it is beautiful.

    2. Bold Green Black Trim Color

Want to make a space feel modern and bold yet cozy? Dark trim against light walls is a winning combo. “Using a deep, rich color like Sherwin Williams’ SW6994 Green Black creates contrast and highlights architectural details,” says Emily. It’s a simple way to add drama and depth without overwhelming the space.

    3. Double-Sided Bookshelf

What’s cooler than a custom bookshelf? A double-sided one! This design move makes the most of the space, acting as both a room divider and a functional storage area. “We even hid a column inside a mitered white oak detail to make it feel intentional and polished,” Emily shares. Now that’s a clever design.

Emily also included shelving that could be adjusted to accommodate the family’s growing book collection and their love for displaying plants and personal mementos.

    4. Kitchenette Meets Potting Station

Who says you can’t mix business with pleasure? This kitchenette doubles as a potting station, ideal for a family that’s all about sustainable living. “It’s a nod to creating a ‘green’ home, improving air quality, and encouraging healthy habits,” Emily explains. Perfect for plant care or grabbing a quick snack after yoga.

    5. Bathroom with Bold Tile Design

This bathroom’s all about contrast and texture. The black tile wainscoting wraps around the room, making the space feel larger, while white tile in the shower adds interest. Emily says, “The gold fixtures and Schluter edging tie everything together with a touch of luxury.” And don’t forget the tile floor rug detail—a small choice that adds big personality.

    Wrapping It Up

For this family, their love of plants and yoga took center stage. There’s plenty of room for lush greenery that boosts air quality and creates a zen vibe.

This basement remodel is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can transform any space into a personal sanctuary. By blending “the experience home” concept with biophilic design and Emily Perebzak’s expert touch, this millennial family now has a basement that’s as functional as it is fabulous. From durable white oak cabinetry to a one-of-a-kind kitchenette, every detail was chosen to enrich their lives—and isn’t that what home is all about?

  • Future-Proof Your Home: Remodeling Ideas for Comfort and Accessibility

Future-Proof Your Home: Remodeling Ideas for Comfort and Accessibility

As more homeowners focus on living in place, they are requesting remodeling projects that prioritize safety, accessibility, and future-proofing. These changes not only make homes more functional, but also enhance comfort and longevity for older adults who would prefer to age in their current homes. From universal design to innovative technologies, here are the top trends for remodeling homes with aging in mind:

    1. Universal Design for Accessibility is fundamental to creating spaces that are usable for everyone, regardless of age or ability. Bathroom remodels are crucial for living in place, incorporating features like zero-entry showers, grab bars, and adjustable-height vanities to improve safety. These modifications can seamlessly blend with the overall aesthetic of a bathroom, maintaining both functionality and style. Laura Watson, Development Manager, ASID, UDCP, at The Cleary Company, emphasizes that “accessible design isn’t just about making homes safe—it’s about creating an environment that evolves with the homeowner’s needs.”

Beyond the bathroom, open-concept living is another major trend, enabling greater mobility by reducing physical barriers like narrow hallways and thresholds. This approach supports homeowners who might use mobility aids such as walkers or wheelchairs. Learn more about Universal Design on our blog!

    2. Technology Enhancements. The integration of smart home technology is revolutionizing aging-in-place design. Homeowners are increasingly adopting features like voice-activated lighting, automated climate control, and fall-detection systems, which provide added security and convenience. These technologies help create a home that is not only easier to manage, but also safer for older adults who wish to maintain their independence.

Smart kitchens are becoming more common, with innovations such as touchless faucets, remotely controlled ovens, and motion-sensor lighting. These upgrades help simplify daily tasks and enhance the usability of the space as mobility and dexterity change over time.

    3. Kitchen Adaptations. Remodeling for accessibility is a key focus for aging in place. Updates like varying countertop heights allow for both seated and standing use, while drawer-style dishwashers and pull-out shelving provide easy access to storage and appliances. These design elements ensure that the kitchen remains a functional and central part of the home, no matter the homeowner’s age or mobility.

Incorporating smart appliances, such as refrigerators that alert you when you’re low on groceries or ovens that can be controlled via smartphone, adds an extra layer of convenience. These features are ideal for those who want to age in place while embracing modern technology.

    4. Multi-Generational Living. projects increasingly focus on creating flexible spaces for multi-generational households. Homeowners are transforming basements or spare rooms into separate living areas, complete with bathrooms and small kitchenettes. These spaces provide privacy for aging relatives or long-term guests while keeping everyone under the same roof.

    5. Sustainable Design Choices are also becoming a growing priority in remodeling. Many homeowners are choosing eco-friendly materials like bamboo flooring and recycled countertops, along with energy-efficient appliances. These materials not only reduce the environmental impact but also contribute to long-term savings in utility costs. Energy-efficient windows, water-saving fixtures, and solar panels are additional sustainable choices that are becoming more popular in aging-in-place remodels. These updates align with both financial and environmental goals, helping homeowners create spaces that are cost-effective and eco-conscious over time.

Proposed Design Concept | Primary Suite Addition

For the primary bathroom above, Designer Katie Florjancic, UDCP, planned for a removeable cabinet in the vanity designed for future wheelchair sink access, giving the clients flexibility in the space as they age and needs change. The space is designed for a wheelchair to have access to the sink. Other Universal design features include:

    • Zero Entry Shower with a bench, handrails and multifunction shower heads, including a handheld spray on a rail for different height positions.
    • Solid surface flooring with no or low profile transitions between tile and LVP.
    • Hardwired motion activated closet lights.

    Beyond Accessibility

Remodeling for living in place goes beyond accessibility—it’s about creating a home that is both functional and future-proof. Incorporating universal design principles, integrating smart technology, and using sustainable materials ensures that homes remain comfortable and safe as their owners’ needs evolve. As Laura Watson aptly puts it, “The best design looks ahead, anticipating tomorrow’s needs while maintaining today’s comfort.”

These trends highlight the growing importance of thoughtful, adaptable design in remodeling projects, ensuring that homes can support their owners throughout all stages of life. Learn more about Accessibility and Universal Design at the Universal Design Living Laboratory, a home located in Columbus, Ohio!

  • Project Developer Role in Home Remodeling

Project Developer Role in Home Remodeling

Making a major change to your home can be exciting and rewarding. It can also seem overwhelming. There are many ways to approach a remodeling project. Some of the most common are DIY or hiring a handyman, jack of all trades, or general contractor. For larger, more complex projects there are two options – hire an architect and/or designer and then a general contractor or hire a Design-Build remodeling firm.

Over 30 years ago when George created The Cleary Company, he used the general contractor model of remodeling by facilitating all of the sales, estimating, budgets, scope of work, and contract writing himself. In 2009, to best serve his clients he added design to the company’s services transforming it into a design-build remodeling firm. The success and growth of The Cleary Company was outpacing George’s capacity to do it all and in 2015 he hired the company’s first Project Developer.

What does a Project Developer do?

The simple answer is sales! The Project Developer(PD) is the initial face of The Cleary Company. Their job is to support you through the entire home remodeling process. They must continually communicate with our clients throughout all phases of their project. Think of them as the quarterback for your remodeling project.

Think of them as the quarterback for your remodeling project. At many design-build remodeling companies, like The Cleary Company, Project Developers have design or estimating backgrounds, and some have both! Like Betsy Burton, who earned a BS in Interior Design from Miami University, in Oxford, OH. With over 35+ years of experience in the industry, she’s done it all from project management and interior architecture to consulting before joining our Team in 2024 in the Project Developer role.

Duties for the Project Developer/Salesperson varies from company to company but at The Cleary Company our PDs:

    • Engage with clients throughout their project, start to finish.
    • Collaborate with Designers & Project Consultants on planning of projects.
    • Create budgets and scopes of work for their projects.
    • Coordinate all pre-construction project meetings.
    • Write & present contracts.

    Project Developer Q&A

    What is their role?

To ensure the project you’ve been dreaming about is brought to life through our Design-Build Team. I really listen to your wants and needs, get all of your ideas on paper and create a plan that gives you the best experience for your project.

    • How pricing can sometimes vary after bids and quotes are submitted.

  • Selecting Wallpaper for Your Home Remodel

Selecting Wallpaper for Your Home Remodel

Elevate your home decor by embracing wallpaper in your living spaces! In recent years, wallpaper has experienced a resurgence in popularity as a versatile and stylish option for home decor. Once considered outdated, it’s now seen as a chic and trendy way to add personality and flair to any room. From subtle patterns to bold designs, wallpaper offers endless possibilities for transforming your living space.

Wallpaper is a versatile and stylish option for adding color, texture, and personality to your home decor. Whether you’re looking to make a bold statement or create a subtle backdrop, wallpaper offers endless possibilities for transforming your living space. So why not embrace this timeless design element and elevate your home decor to new heights?

The Cleary Company’s Design Team composed this article to share tips for using wallpaper and how it adds color and personality to your home. Let’s explore why you should consider embracing wallpaper in your home and how to make the most of this versatile design element.

7 Reasons Why Our Design Team Loves Wallpaper!

    1. Instant Impact: One of the most significant advantages of using wallpaper is its ability to make a bold statement and instantly transform a room. Whether you opt for a vibrant floral pattern, a geometric design, or a textured finish, wallpaper can add depth, character, and visual interest to any space.
    2. Versatility: Wallpaper comes in a wide range of styles, colors, and textures, making it incredibly versatile. Whether you’re aiming for a modern, traditional, or eclectic look, there’s a wallpaper design to suit every taste and decor scheme. From understated neutrals to eye-catching prints, the options are virtually endless.
    3. Enhanced Ambiance: Wallpaper can significantly impact the ambiance of a room, creating a cozy, intimate atmosphere or a bright, energetic vibe. For example, using wallpaper with warm tones and organic patterns can evoke a sense of comfort and relaxation in a bedroom or living room, while bold, geometric designs can add a contemporary edge to a dining area or home office.
    4. Creative Expression: Wallpaper provides an opportunity for creative expression and personalization in your home decor. Whether you choose to cover an entire room or create an accent wall, wallpaper allows you to showcase your unique style and personality. Mix and match patterns, experiment with color combinations, or opt for custom designs to make a statement that’s uniquely yours.
    5. Practicality: In addition to its aesthetic appeal, wallpaper offers practical benefits as well. High-quality wallpaper is durable, easy to clean, and resistant to fading, making it a practical choice for high-traffic areas such as hallways, entryways, and children’s rooms. Additionally, wallpaper can help conceal imperfections on walls and surfaces, providing a smooth and flawless finish.
    6. Easy Installation and Removal: Modern wallpaper is easier to install and remove than ever before, thanks to advancements in adhesive technology and materials. Many wallpapers are self-adhesive or peel-and-stick, allowing for hassle-free application and removal without damaging the underlying surface. This makes it easy to update your decor and experiment with different styles without committing to a permanent change.
    7. Cost-Effective Solution: Wallpaper is a cost-effective way to achieve a high-end look in your home decor. Compared to other design elements such as paint or upholstery, wallpaper offers excellent value for money and can significantly enhance the visual appeal of a room without breaking the bank.

  • Elements of a Successful Home Remodel

Elements of a Successful Home Remodel

Space Planning with a Professional Designer

There are several essential steps to creating a new floorplan for a remodel. The Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus, Ohio will collaborate with you to find the right plan for your home remodeling project. Using basic principles of design is a great place to start but creating effective and aesthetically pleasing interiors goes beyond those and incorporates your family’s lifestyle needs and wants.

When selecting the right space plan for you and your family it helps to consider these 3 things.

    1. Lifestyle. Does the plan reflect the way you live?
    2. Space needs. How big does your plan really need to be?
    3. Changing lifestyle needs. How long are you planning on staying in your home?
form ever follows function.” (Louis Sullivan, American architect, 1896)

    Space Planning Form

Begin your renovation project by analyzing your existing space. Discuss what works and doesn’t work for your lifestyle. Also, consider what’s missing that will make your home more comfortable. Often what is possible depends on the age of your home. An older home may pose limitations based on the wiring and plumbing and a newer home may be in a neighborhood that has building restrictions. Your Development Team at The Cleary Company can help you navigate these parameters to create a functional and beautiful living environment.

Next steps begin by thinking of function and form simultaneously. “Function”, in the above adage, is laying out a home according to your use and “form” refers to the shape, structure, and visual appearance of your space. Deep diving into both design ideas will produce a home that works well for you day-to-day and gives you that feeling of excitement or peace when you enter.

    Space Planning Function

Considering function allows you to achieve goals like these:

    • Better circulation, flow and organization. Elements include halls, galleries, and the parts of rooms people move around in.
    • Increased comfort through proper ventilation. Natural ventilation is the intentional passive flow of outdoor air into a building through planned openings (such as louvers, doors, and windows). Natural ventilation does not require mechanical systems to move outdoor air.
    • Improved safety such as slip-resistant flooring and well-lit surfaces. Also it’s important to consider life safety systems. Those elements that help ensure the safety during emergencies like fire, natural disaster, break-in, gas leak, or power failure.
    • Higher energy efficiency, of course, can be achieved through upgraded appliances, light fixtures, plumbing and water heaters, and proper amounts of insulation in the walls and roof according to codes and regional standards. Also important is properly weatherizing spaces using weather stripping and caulking.
    • Ease of use for abilities of all family members. Principles of Universal Design (Aging in Place) ensure the composition of a space can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability.

Space Planning in Your Home Remodel

This list does not make a home. All the above would be great for a fast-food restaurant as well. A home is created when your designer and you collaborate on “form” which includes the design style, colors, and materials. Your selections should reflect who you are. Collecting images of things, you like will give the designer insight into what feeling you would like your home to have.

Perhaps you would like your Kitchen to feel calm with minimal visual distractions. Or maybe your family room could reflect your high-energy family with the use of intense colors and material textures. Or your memory of the rustic Vermont bathroom with the steam shower could be your inspiration for your primary bathroom. Drawing on your own memories and thinking about what will make you feel happy everyday should be part of the design exercise.

The wonderful part of home remodeling is that you can, through shape, color, and textures, create a space that is unique to you and your family. You can also enter a new stage of relaxation knowing that all your functional needs have been met as best as possible.

  • Designing Your Home’s Entryway

    Designing Your Home’s Entryway

Unlocking the Power of a Good First Impression

Think of your home’s entryway as a handshake, a first impression that sets the tone. It’s more than bricks and mortar—it’s a way to highlight your personality and create a seamless transition from the outside world into your abode. Are you ready to unleash the power of your entryway? Our Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus Ohio explores some design and style ideas from curb appeal to entryways—integrating design and style to bring new life to your home.

Make Heads Turn with Your Curb Appeal

    • Good Lighting: Install welcoming porch lights that cast a warm glow and enhance safety. Choose ones that fit your personality and your home’s style.
    • Color & Bling: Greet guests with a smile! A fresh coat of paint, paired with stylish door hardware and house numbers instantly transforms the entrance. Consider bold colors or unique finishes that reflect the style of the home. A new richly colored wooden door is quite the statement as well.
    • Dress up your doorstep: Update that welcome mat with a seasonal design, a fun message, or a classic look. Potted plants add color and vibrancy, a small water feature creates a calming mood, and seasonal decorations announce a festive presence.
    • Walk this way: Create a clear and inviting pathway to your home. Use pavers, stone slabs, or a new concrete sidewalk to welcome guests. Add with low-maintenance greenery along the borders. Don’t forget lighting your walkways for safety at night. Easy to install solar powered options can be found online or at most home improvement stores.

    Enhancing Entryways

    • Storage Solutions: No one wants a cluttered entryway, but life happens, right? Say goodbye to clutter by using stylish benches, shoe cubbies, or built-in cabinets. Multifunctional pieces that offer storage and seating maximize space and functionality.
    • Mirror Magic: A strategically placed mirror in the entryway can open the space, reflect light, and create a sense of depth. Plus, who doesn’t like a quick outfit check or last glance before heading out the door?
    • Welcome with Color: Add a splash for a statement! Paint a piece of furniture, add some wallpaper to one wall, put some colorful pillows on the bench, or add a vibrant rug to personalize what might otherwise be a boring area.
    • Light it up: Layer lighting with a combination of overhead fixtures, table lights, and sconces. Depending on the need, you’ll have the right lighting. And a light left on at night welcome those late arrivals.
    • Greenery is life: Choosing some low-maintenance hardy plants to flank the door or sit on an entry table or bench not only purifies the air but adds a touch of nature. Snake plants, Monsteras, and air plants are good options.

Seamless Integration of Outside & Indoors

    • Let the outside in: If you have a mudroom or a porch, consider installing French doors, a new door with a larger window, or large windows to connect the indoor and outdoor spaces. Creating a light and airy feel, while maximizing the natural light, can really brighten up the entryway.
    • Feature the flooring: Create a smooth transition from your entryway to the rest of your home with similar materials or colors to create continuity and visual flow. Or do the complete opposite and make the entryway floor a stand-alone feature to set the tone. There are no rules!
    • Control Clutter: Remember that storage idea we talked about? If you walk in and step over shoes, coats, and bookbags, storage is needed. Are you a bit unorganized? Create designated spaces for keys, mail, and other everyday items.
