  • Designing Kitchen Islands

    Designing Kitchen Islands

Elevate Your Kitchen with an Ideal Island

If the kitchen reigns supreme as the heart of your home then your island is a culinary center and social hub all rolled into one. After all, how many times are we gathered around a kitchen island? But beyond its utilitarian purpose, a well-designed island can elevate your kitchen’s aesthetics and functionality.

The Remodel-Design-Build Team, at The Cleary Company in Columbus, Ohio, loves creating a variety of shapes, styles, and configurations of kitchen islands specific to our clients’ needs.

    Shapes – Styles – Configurations

There are endless options to choose from so how do you know what will be right for your kitchen? Read on to learn what our Designers consider when incorporating an island into a design plan.

    Classic Rectangular Islands:

    • Timeless and practical. Rectangular islands are the most requested choice for kitchens as they work well in most configurations of a kitchen design.
    • Ideal for larger spaces or an open concept, they offer ample countertop space for meal prep and entertaining.
    • Extended overhangs with seating are perfect for breakfast and snack meals but are space-dependent.
    • A sink, microwave, stove top, or dishwasher can all be featured in this type of island.
    • Incorporate built-in storage solutions like specialty pull-out drawers for cooking utensils or pans for added convenience.

    T-Shaped Islands:

    • A contemporary twist on the traditional. A T-shaped island creates a dynamic focal point.
    • If space allows, the perpendicular shape can accommodate added seating, more storage, and multiple work zones.
    • Adding a statement pendant light above the intersection creates a bit of drama and flare.

    Peninsula or L-Shaped Islands:

    • Maximize corner space and functionality with this shape.
    • Incorporate distinct zones for prepping, cooking, and dining, making it perfect as a multitasking option.
    • Plan for built-in appliances or a prep sink, and increase the functionality.
    • A peninsula island will be attached to one wall, which is ideal for smaller kitchens.

    Circular Islands:

    • There’s a resurgence of curvy islands due to their fluidity and graceful lines.
    • A design that works well in smaller kitchens, providing a seamless flow and no hard angles or corners.

    Multiple Islands:

    • Why only have one island? If your space allows, a second one upgrades the style and luxury of your kitchen to the next level. Perfect for those who frequently host large gatherings!
    • Twice the counterspace allows for room to incorporate many different tasks. Think of using one as functional and the second for serving, eating, or even homework space for the kids.
    • Add a beverage station with under-counter appliances like an ice maker and fridge for entertaining and to keep guests and kids out of the main working space of the kitchen.

    Smart Islands:

    • Pop-out hidden power outlets and USB outlets allow device charging when needed but can be hidden away when not in use and add functionality to any island design.
    • Add these smart features, such as touchless faucets, connected appliances, a retractable TV, and built-in speakers.
    • Connect your island to a home automation system for seamless control of lights, music, and more.

    Mobile and Modular Islands:

    • A moveable island offers flexibility in a small kitchen serving multiple purposes and changing needs. Use when needed, and store out of the way when not in use.
    • Consider a unit that incorporates a built-in cutting board, knife block and storage.

    Waterfall Countertops:

    • Create a sleek and seamless look with a waterfall edge island. This is where the countertop cascades down the sides, creating visual interest.
    • Engineered quartz or natural stones like granite, marble or quartzite are all luxurious choices for this style.
    • This look can be added to one or both sides of the island and can also accommodate seating.

    Countertop Materials Matter!

Now that you’ve considered configuration and function, don’t forget about choosing a countertop. Again, with so many options, what material should you choose for your island countertops? We love them all and collaborate with our clients to find what works for their lifestyle needs and budget.

Here’s a list of a few of the more common countertop materials and their properties:

    • Engineered Quartz—is a man-made product of reconstituted natural quartzite. It is a very durable, low-maintenance material. It is available in a stunning array of designs, patterns, and colors. Our Designers love Cambria!
    • Natural Stone—is sophisticated, classic, and a choice for many people. Sheens, colors, and styles are readily available. It does require upkeep which can be dependent on the variety you choose. Natural stones can also patina with age so it’s important to know what type you have and to follow through with recommended care & maintenance. The most varieties available are granite, marble, and quartzite.
    • Butcher Block—made from certain types of wood like pine and oak naturally have antimicrobial properties that help kill bacteria. They also add a warm, soothing aesthetic to your space. Many home cooks like using butcher block. Watch out for knife marks and be ready to do some regular oiling to keep them in the best shape.
    • Stainless Steel—is sleek and hygienic. These modern and industrial countertops aren’t a choice for all, but they might be an excellent choice for your kitchen if you’re going for a more commercial or industrial look.
    • Laminate—is a flexible product that is easy to work with and a great choice when budget is a concern. Formica is the most recognized name brand but others our Team have used are WilsonArt or Arborite. They can imitate materials like wood, stone or brick and are used for more than just countertops. Although care & maintenance is relatively easy (no sealing required) the product is not as durable as the materials listed above.

  • Insights from Designer Shannon Tannehill

    Insights from Designer Shannon Tannehill

Happy 2024! With a new year, comes new color trends. Design professionals look forward to the inspiration released annually from our favorite paint companies. Some of my favorites to follow are Pantone, Benjamin Moore, and Sherwin Williams. After reviewing their “2024 Color of Year” materials I noticed a very soft and nature-inspired palette.

Read on to join me, Shannon Tannehill, UDCP, Design Consultant at The Cleary Company Remodel-Design-Build in Columbus, Ohio for a review of the fresh paint tones for 2024.

    Interior Color Trends

All these colors remind me of ones seen in the evening sky that range from dusk to night starting with Sherwin Williams, Upward (SW6239).

This almost pastel color blue reminds me of the sky on a summer afternoon before the sun begins to set. Soft shades are great for a bedroom, powder room, or finished basement. The coastal feel brings a sense of serenity and ocean calm while the creamy undertones of Upward are neutral enough to pair with other colors. I like these complimentary colors, also from Sherwin Williams, Drift of Mist (SW9166), Gale Force (SW7605), Sea Salt (SW6204), and Natural Linen (SW9109) to create an ocean oasis.

    Color Trends
    Upward by Sherwin Williams

As the sun begins its descent, the next color is Blue Nova (825) from Benjamin Moore. It’s a soft, dusk sky feeling with its lavender and periwinkle undertones. It is a great accent in a primary bath or bedroom. Or paint all the walls for a delicate moody feel. But don’t just limit paint to the walls! Consider a statement furniture piece with gold or chrome hardware or a front door for a pop color anywhere in your home. Try pairing with these complimentary colors from Benjamin Moore, Topaz (070), Regent Green (2136-20), and White Dove (OC-17).

    Blue Nova by Benjamin Moore

You know that time when the clouds begin to change color as the sun starts to get closer to the horizon? This next color could be pulled from this beautiful sight only found in nature. Pantone’s Peach Fuzz (13-1023) has creamy oranges with hints of pink. This is a lovely color that is reminiscent of that perfect sunset.

If you are a little timid and do not want to commit to an entire space being “peachy” add accents with pillows, rugs, and drapes for a feminine touch to introduce a not so common color. This would go great with floral wallpaper, wood tones as well as with the other colors of the year mentioned above. Other Pantone hues that pair nicely with Peach Fuzz are Honey Peach (13-1015), Pristine (11-0606), Marsala (18-1438), and Almondine (16-1415).

    Peach Fuzz from Pantone

Once the sun has fully set, the night sky begins to creep over. Not quite black or blue but a dark grey with subtle hints of greens and browns without being too dreary. Like Urbane Bronze (SW7048) and Iron Ore (SW7069) from Sherwin Williams. I can see using this in a small space to give it warmth and dimension. Create a contrast with light almost white tones. Pair with a patterned floor or artwork to keep your eye moving through the space.

    Exterior Color Trends

New color trends of using dark colors on exteriors have been gaining popularity in Columbus, Ohio. They are great for trim, garage and front doors, or even the whole house with wood accents. For example, check out this gorgeous Mid-Century Modern whole house remodel and the traditional porch addition projects we built in Upper Arlington!

Exterior Whole House Remodel Project Upper Arlington Ohio
Siding James Hardie Board & Batton color Grays Harbor SW 6236 & Pella Lifestyle Series Windows Black
Front Porch Addition Upper Arlington Ohio
Exterior main color Gauntlet Grey SW 7019 – trim color Tricorn Black SW 6258 – shutters Sommelier SW 7595

Prefer a deep green? Check out Mountain Olive from Behr Ultra for a pop of color on your front door. Classic neutral exterior colors like Chic Taupe or Weatherwood White compliment a green door nicely.

    Color Trends

I hope you can find some inspiration for inside and outside of your home with these selections from the 2024 colors of the year. Pro tip ~ Keep in mind to go with what YOU like. These are some fun guidelines for what has been forecasted as emerging favorites for years to come.

Take a chance on something you would have never thought of with my suggestions. After all, if you decide you don’t like it, painting is an easy change. And let’s face it, we have all had to paint over the red wall in our dining room at one point. Happy Designing!

  • Designer Emily Perebzak | NARI UDCP

Designer Emily Perebzak | NARI UDCP

Join us in congratulating our Designer Emily Perebzak! She earned a Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP) accreditation from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). Emily relocated to Columbus, in September of 2022, from Wadsworth Ohio to join our Team. She earned degrees in Interior Design & Marketing from Kent State University and has worked for a Design-Build firm in Westlake.

Because more clients are wanting to live in their homes longer, we recognize that all our projects should include principles of Universal Design. It applies to clients who desire to “age in place” but also to their extended family, caregivers and guests living or visiting with them.

    Q & A with Emily Perebzak, UDCP – Designer

What is your role and responsibilities @ TCC?

As a Designer on the Development Team, my role is to work with clients to create a floor plan tailored to their family and within their budget. I also collaborate with my colleagues on each of my assigned projects through the completion of the build.

Why did you decide to take the certification test?

Personally, I enjoy learning and wanting to grow professionally in the industry. I want deeper insight when designing projects that work for people of all ages and abilities. Our clients wish to live in their homes for as long as they can. It’s crucial to create spaces that allow for people to age place.

    How did you prepare?

I attended a four-week, 2 hour, class online and studied the materials provided.

Why did you choose a career in remodeling?

I love being creative and problem-solving to create designs that work for each individual client. I enjoy collaborating with the team and clients. I can create custom designs that work for the people who use the space daily. Remodeling isn’t easy but I enjoy the challenge.

How has TCC supported your growth, both personally and professionally?

By providing me with training and education from day one. They prioritize investment in people by encouraging learning and certifications. Offering opportunities to attend industry classes offered by our vendors and manufacturer reps and networking through the local NARI & NKBA chapters.

What do you believe is the hidden gem of working for TCC?

As a full-service design-build company, we can fully develop a project before constructing it. This allows for a collaborative process for working through all the options and possibilities of a project. Our clients have greater control of their budget and can decide what elements are most important to them. Taking time to work through the development process in the conceptual stage allows for a more efficient experience during construction.

What do you enjoy the most about working for TCC?

I enjoy the people here at the TCC. We all work closely together and get to bounce ideas off one another.

Universal Design – What Does It Really Mean?

Universal Design isn’t something most homeowners think about when building or remodeling a home, but it is something we discuss frequently with our clients. Aging In Place or Universal Design (both used interchangeably) is simply defined as a home designed and built to be used and accessed easily by all people no matter their age, size, or abilities. This universal approach to design and construction is all about planning and details. It considers the products, features, and space planning considerations that need to be in place for the space to function for all.

Creating a Universal Design home means that the living spaces are designed with those principles in mind from the beginning and is aesthetically beautiful. Some examples in design, planning, and adaptations that can be made are wider doorways, smooth level flooring, curb-free showers with grab bars and benches, no-step entryways, lowered countertop workspaces, elevators or stair lifts, accessible electrical outlets and switches, and kitchens that offer multi-level surfaces for people who use a wheelchair or just need to sit while preparing food.

Want to know more about what Universal Design is? Click here to read our blog post on the subject!

    What is NARI Certification?

Certified professionals represent an elite group of industry experts who possess extensive technical and management skills. These skills set them apart as capable remodeling professionals. Standards and exam questions are developed by leading remodeling experts who are well-versed in technical and management best practices for the remodeling industry.

Why does our Remodel-Design-Build Team value industry certifications?

As a trusted Remodel-Design-Build firm in Columbus, Ohio, we recognize the need for continuing education for Our Team to be atop the industry. We also believe we have a responsibility to our clients to stay up on the best business and remodeling practices as well as have knowledge of new or improved products on the market. From formal CEU classes administered by our industry partners to informal Lunch-n-Learns hosted by our vendors, throughout each year, our Team regularly participates in webinars and live presentations to improve our knowledge of home remodeling.

Not to mention, data suggests 80% of consumers would choose a remodeling professional who is certified over one who is not!

  • Kitchen Remodel & Expanded Floorplan

    Kitchen Remodel & Expanded Floorplan

Project Spotlight: After eight years of living in their Upper Arlington, Ohio home, our client realized the 1968 footprint of their suburban home’s kitchen did not function for their family’s lifestyle. With a desire for a larger footprint and more open space to accommodate gatherings of family and friends, they decided it was time to hire a remodeler. “We don’t spend much time watching HGTV,” says the homeowner with a laugh, “which is part of why we went with The Cleary Company Remodel-Design-Build. They have a strong design process and did a great job with the color palette.”

    As-Built Plans & Before Photos

The kitchen remodel demo scope included not only gutting the kitchen but also removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room. The dining room window and a section of the wall between the kitchen and living room were also removed.

Proposed Design-Build Kitchen Plan Solves Client Issues

The wall section between the kitchen and living room was removed to accommodate recessed pantry cabinets. About 15sf of floor space was used from the living room’s footprint. Using this space made a huge impact on the functionality of the kitchen’s new layout.

A large 13’x4″ 2-level center island offers the family seating for four along with storage on both sides. Wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry was installed in what previously was the dining room. The family gained a bar and loads of customized storage.

    The Result!

An entertainer’s kitchen, hosting large gatherings of family & friends is made easy in this redesigned floorplan. The whole kitchen floorplan was reorganized for better function. The cabinets are customized with personalized storage solutions including charging drawers, a spice rack and utensil holders. A new sliding glass door in place of the old dining room window gives direct access to the backyard from the kitchen.

Members can nominate their projects through an online portal for judging by peers selected by NARI Executives outside their local chapter or region.

CotY award-winning remodeling projects demonstrate exceptional design and craftsmanship in renovation. A diverse and impartial panel rates each project based on 5 criteria.

    • To what degree were the expressed needs of the client met?
    • To what degree does the project enhance the existing structure functionally?
    • Is there evidence of superior craftsmanship?
    • To what degree does the project enhance the existing structure aesthetically?
    • Were innovative used of materials and/or methods of construction used in the project?

  • Checklist for Home Emergencies

    Checklist for Home Emergencies

Home emergencies are not something we think about every day. No one wants to deal with a home maintenance disaster, but do you know what to do when a pipe bursts or sewage backs up in your home? Every homeowner should know a few basics to maintain and protect their biggest investment. The purpose of the following checklist is to help you take steps to minimize a home emergency and assess any damage.

The single most important thing to remember is to put safety first and second is to act fast! After the issue is under control you may also want to document any damage and contact your insurance agent.

How to deal with the most common water-related home emergencies:

Burst pipe or major water leak:

    • Stop the water flow by turning off the main water valve (usually in your basement or utility room).
    • Next, turn on the faucet in the lowest level of the home to rid pipes of all water.
    • Don’t delay cleanup! The longer things stay wet the more likely for permanent damage – remove water & dry out.
    • If a toilet is leaking use its turn-off valve first & if it won’t close then shut off the main water valve.
    • If it’s a hot water leak try turning off the valve on the water heater.

    Flooded basement:

    • Keep dry until you turn off electrical power – put on boots before wading through water.
    • Turn off the main power to the breaker box – if unreachable call the utility company to cut power to the home.
    • Take caution in flood waters which may contain toxins from stored belongings.
    • Don’t delay cleanup! The longer things stay wet the more likely for permanent damage – remove water & dry out.
    • If flood damage isn’t covered by your homeowner’s insurance DON’T report it – it may still go on record as a claim.

    Sewage backup:

    • Homes with basements and in low-lying areas are most vulnerable.
    • Unblocking any visibly blocked individual drains is a good start.
    • In the basement floor drain & laundry tub, place a screw or plug.
    • Block the main line with test plug – insert an inflatable test plug & inflate with a bicycle pump.
    • Shut off the main water supply.
    • Call a plumber to help clear lines and determine if the city lines are an issue. NOTE: The Cleary Company can help with a referral!

    Leaking roof:

    • Act fast to minimize water damage but wait until after a storm to climb on a roof. Wet roofs are slippery!
    • Quick fix – bandage large areas with a plastic tarp, screw plywood over the hole & secure over the roof ridge with 2x4s or lath nailed to the roof.
    • Small holes can be patched with flashing or extra shingles or caulk.
    • Call a roofing professional for an inspection. NOTE: The Cleary Company can help with a referral!

How to deal with the most common nature-related home emergencies:

    Electrical storm:

    • Unplug sensitive electronics for protection from power surges.
    • If your home is hit by lighting don’t wait for flames, call 911 to dispatch the fire department ASAP because fires can hide in the walls.
    • Protect yourself from lightning by avoiding contact with electrical appliances, and landline phones.
    • Do not shower or bathe.

    Power outage:

    • Always keep a flashlight handy and loaded with good batteries.
    • Prepare for surges – unplug all electronics & small appliances, major appliances can be turned off at the breaker box, turn the thermostat heat down (or cooling up) and leave on one light so you know when power is restored. And when power returns DO NOT turn everything on at once.
    • Be aware if lights are noticeably dimmer or brighter after power returns, turn off the main supply at the breaker box & call the electric utility.

    Tornado or high winds:

    • TAKE COVER!
    • Move to a protected interior room on the lowest floor of the house as far as possible from exterior walls & windows.
    • Use pillows, cushions & blankets to protect yourself from flying debris.
    • Ignore the myths – DO NOT open windows AND the southwest corner is not always the safest place to take cover.
    • After the storm passes do an exterior review of the home to check for damages.

    Wild animal invasion:

    • Raccoons and squirrels can do a lot of damage quickly.
    • If found inside the home – isolate the varmint in a room, open the window and exterior doors and then leave the room. Most will find their way out on their own.
    • Outside the home – if they are a nuisance or creating conflict try to control & deter first, not difficult but requires persistence.
    • DO NOT CHASE! OR set your dog or cat after them – these two options can result in smelly messes and/or a trip to the vet.
    • Set a trap. However, per Ohio DNR regulations, it is unlawful to relocate off your property, they must be euthanized.
    • Visit Ohio Department of Natural Resources website for tips & strategies on nuisance wildlife.
    • Call a professional if needed. NOTE: The Cleary Company can help with a referral!

How to deal with dangerous home emergencies:

    Carbon monoxide alert:

    • CO poisoning is leading cause of accidental death in US!
    • If an alarm sounds and anyone is experiencing flu like symptoms, get everyone outside fast, then call 911 to dispatch the fire department.
    • Never ignore an alarm! Open doors & windows, and turn off all sources of CO, like gas appliances, furnace, water heater, kerosene heater and small engines or vehicles.
    • Contact the gas utility company to inspect your gas lines

    Kitchen fire:

    • A small kitchen extinguisher kept under the sink is highly recommended.
    • For a small countertop appliance – unplug and pour baking soda onto fire.
    • On a stovetop – turn off burner & smother flames with a lid or baking soda.
    • NEVER use water on a grease fire.
    • For an oven – do not open the door, leave closed and turn off the heat.
    • Keep in mind fires that seem to be out can reignite – keep an eye on the area of the fire for several minutes after the fire appears to be out.
    • AND if the fire spreads – get everyone out & call 911 immediately!

    Dead furnace:

    • Check airflow? Preventative maintenance is key – check furnace filter monthly and change as needed when clogged.
    • Power on? Check the circuit breaker, even a gas furnace needs power for the thermostat, fan motor and valves.
    • Gas valve on? The handle should be parallel to gas pipe.
    • Exterior exhaust pipe clear? Sometimes heavy snow can cover up exhaust vent to the outside.
    • Does thermostat need to be reset? Turn it down, then turn it back up.
    • Still not working call an HVAC professional NOTE: The Cleary Company can help with a referral!
