Kitchen remodeling is one of the most popular home remodeling projects call our Team receives. And it’s also one that we love to design and build for our clients! The kitchen is the heart of your home, a place for family and friends to gather and cook, eat, and hang out. But when you’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen, it can be tough to know where to start.
That’s where our Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company, Columbus, OH comes in. We get to see the kitchen renovation process from start to finish. We are blessed and grateful to work with so many amazing clients since 1994 and to share their joy when they see their vision come to life.
From Vision to Reality: Kitchen Remodeling
Helping homeowners create their dream kitchen: Let’s face it, we love working with people! We wouldn’t be doing it for so long if we didn’t love seeing our clients’ reactions to their new kitchens, seeing their visions become reality, and spending time interacting with them from our first conversation to the last. We love knowing that we played a part in creating a space they’ll love for years to come. In 2023, we published Kitchen Inspirations to help even more. Download your copy here!
Creating a space that is functional: A kitchen isn’t just a place to cook. It’s a place to entertain, live life, finish homework around a kitchen island, socialize, and eat! It’s important for us to focus on the functionality of a kitchen for each client. Our experienced Design Team uses principles of Universal Design and Aging in Place Design to create spaces that function for the entire family in all stages of life.
Creating functionality in a kitchen is a bit like a puzzle. How can we add storage, create more space, change the flow and function, and optimize the existing space? Challenge accepted!
Transforming outdated kitchens: We’ve seen it all—outdated appliances, cramped layouts, small kitchens, and dated finishes. There’s nothing like taking it from outdated to beautiful and inviting.
Using the materials and technology that work for each project: New materials and technology emerge all the time. It’s important that our designers and craftspeople use what is best and needed for each remodeled kitchen. We know what works, what is new and trending, and what is timeless. Knowing all of this allows us to offer our clients the best possible solutions and products.
Applying our creativity and expertise: Solving problems with innovative solutions is a big part of our process. We love using the creativity and expertise of our Team to develop solutions to interesting challenges. Especially storage related problems!
Making a difference & Improving Your Home Life
Creating a well-designed kitchen, addressing your needs and wants, makes a significant difference in your life. Efficient prep space, an enjoyable cooking experience, and better flow and function are the cornerstones of our design process. We can’t guarantee to make you a better cook, but we can guarantee we will make a difference in your kitchen!
Kitchen remodeling is more than tearing down walls, expanding the footprint, installing cabinets and new appliances. It’s about creativity, functionality, beauty, and building relationships. For almost 30 years our Team has been remodeling homes in Columbus, Ohio and we’ve transformed many kitchen spaces for our clients. We’re ready to transform yours next! There’s no getting around it, the bathroom is one of the most used rooms in your home. Our Team speaks daily with clients who are ready to transform their bathroom into an oasis. From a half bath or powder room to a full primary spa-like bath, the possibilities are endless, but by collaborating with our Design-Build Team, we take much of the guesswork and stress out of the picture. And we help you create a design plan that brings your vision to reality.
As always, we are watching the trends and incorporating ideas our clients have into their bathrooms. The trend forecast is showing design elements we are already utilizing and others we are excited to incorporate!
What’s Hot & What’s Next
Zero Entry or Low Curb Showers: A zero-entry shower is just that—zero entry. There is no wall or barrier to step over, making a shower easily accessible, while creating a sleek and modern look. Eliminating the curb means easy entry for all, no stubbed toes or tripping hazards. When cost-prohibitive to install another great option is a lower curb option. Both offer a sleek design that provides an accessible shower for children and those with mobility issues.
The shower and bathroom floors are one level.
Freestanding Soaker Tub: This is not a new trend, but one that continues to grow in popularity, and for good reason. Many of the bathrooms we remodel include the removal of a clunky, large built-in tub. A freestanding soaker tub is a great option for homeowners that don’t want to give up having a bathing tub but would like more room for a larger shower. They’re slimmer and take up less space, but still allow for long bubbly soaks after a hard day.
Freestanding tub creates more open floor space.
Wet Rooms: The two-in-one shower and bath concept is gaining popularity in bathrooms. A glass divider or full door encloses both a zero-entry shower, typically with multiple body sprays and showerheads and a freestanding tub. It can visually create a feel of a larger space. It really maximizes convenience and practicality for those desiring both bathing options in one bathroom. A great design choice for creating a spa-like experience!
Triple Vanity: You can’t watch a bathroom design or house hunting show without hearing the homeowners gush over a bathroom with double vanities (or wanting to remodel a bathroom to gain double vanities). But what if you have three kids using the same bathroom? We are currently remodeling a bathroom for our clients that features a triple vanity. We know this will be a game-changer for this family!
Design Rendering / 3 kids = 3 vanities
Storage: Storage, both visible and hidden, continues to be one of the most requested design changes when remodeling a bathroom. Homeowners want to display towels and other necessities or they want everything hidden. We have removed tubs not only to enlarge a shower but also to create room for more storage.
Double vanity with large drawers & built-in linen closet.
Technology: Technology, like Bluetooth showerheads and chromo-therapy lights, continue to be on-trend. More and more options come to market each year. Our clients are beginning to request the following options more and more – smart televisions, USB charging stations, and smart toilets. Just don’t forget everything you install needs to be waterproof!
And Bling!
Shower Features: A feature wall in your shower is typically filled with color and texture, drawing your eye to an exciting design element. Along with feature walls, some of our clients are requesting grout-free showers. One product we have found, Tyvarian, is very affordable, mimics the look of stone, but is grout-free, moisture and mildew resistant, and easy to clean.
Color, Color, Color: Bathroom colors are evolving to both bold and nostalgic. We are seeing cool blue shades, white (the standard classic), fun colors inspired by cotton candy and bubblegum, as well as, earthy warm tones. Neutral colors are still the choice of many of our clients, but more and more are choosing to incorporate a splash of color. Popular are blues for the vanity cabinets.
Sherwin Williams SW7608 Adrift
Tile: Tiles, including wood effect tiles and other organic looks are trending as well. They bring warmth and coziness to your space. Mosaic accents and detailed design tiles can make a bold statement on your walls or floor. We love seeing how a bathroom evolves, based on our clients’ tile choices!
OtherDesign Features: Floating vanities and feature lighting help a bathroom stand out and create stunning focal points, especially those with smaller footprints.

As the air turns crisp and leaves change color, your weekends fill with trips to apple orchards and pumpkin patches. Yes, fall has fully arrived in Columbus, OH! It’s time to cozy up your home for the upcoming chilly seasons. Revel in the beauty of this time of year by infusing style, comfort, and warmth into your home. Our Designers are all over these great ideas and you’ll probably see a few of them in our office here at The Cleary Company.
Hopefully, some of these creative ideas will inspire you!
“Welcome Home” Entryways
Fill your front entryway with fall décor for the ultimate curb appeal. Pumpkins, autumnal wreaths, mums, seasonal doormats, all create that pumpkin spice feel.
Soft, warm-toned outdoor accent lights create a welcoming glow as nighttime arrives earlier in the day. Now is the time to install solar lighting on your front walkway to create a welcoming ambiance.
As fall transitions to winter, simply swap out with winter wreaths, holiday décor, a blanket on the chair on your porch, and winter greenery.
Decorate Tables — Set a Place for Guests
Is your formal dining room seldom used these days? Keep these spaces alive by creating seasonal scenes.
Use Autumn and winter or holiday placemats, captivating centerpieces, and themed dishes to set the mood for the seasons.
Want to keep it simple? Seasonal color schemes might be all you need if you want to create an easy, but stylish change to the table.
Cozy Up the Living Spaces
Nothing says fall like soft, fluffy blankets and pillows on a couch or chair. It just makes you want to snuggle up and read a book, watch TV, or just watch the fire.
This might be the time to upgrade your fireplace. A new, updated mantel, interesting tiles, or fresh paint will make a big difference. And while you are at it, rearrange the furniture or add some stools and chairs to take advantage of the warmth from the fireplace.
If your living spaces are wood or tile floors, this is the time to add rugs (even layer them) in these rooms. Adding extra warmth and visual interest will beat the worst of the dreary, cold, days.
Extra lighting, using floor or table lamps, can add a bit of brightness to a darker area.
Change out your summer sheers for thicker or heavier drapes. This adds a touch of elegance and keeps out any drafts.
Family Room Addition
Comfy Bedrooms
Damp Ohio falls can be cold! Swap out your regular bedding for soft, warm flannel sheets and layer with an extra blanket.
As days get shorter and the nights get darker earlier, stringing fairy lights in your bedrooms is welcome ambient glow, is festive and adds a magical touch to any kid’s room.
Bathroom Vibes
Scented candles create a calm and soothing feel to a bathroom. And the options are endless for this time of year. Pumpkin spice, anyone?
Seasonal-colored plush towels are easy ways to change up and create a cozy oasis.
Install a towel warmer to ward off the early morning chills.
If you’re remodeling your bathroom, consider radiant heated floors. You’ll never have another chilly morning in the bathroom.
Outdoor Living
Do you want to stay outdoors as long as possible? Now is the time to install a fire pit or fire table on your porch or patio.
Add comfortable seating and cozy blankets to create the perfect experience.
Outdoor lighting—string lights, lanterns, sconces, or solar lights all add to the ability to stay out later at night, especially if entertaining.
Fall and football go hand in hand. Is it time to install an outdoor television to watch sports or a movie with the kids?

The Remodel-Design-Build process simplified. We get to know you and you get to know us. Discovering your unique style and vision for your home is a critical step in the development of your project. Together, we work to find the answers to your project’s biggest questions. With guidance from your Project Developer and inspiration from your Designer, we work to create the home of your dreams within your budget. Then, our skilled Project Managers and Lead Carpenters provide you high-quality installation and service. You sit back and watch your dream come together. When the renovation lifecycle has completed, all that is left to do is enjoy your beautiful new space!
After you’ve given us a call or submitted a new project form online you’ll have the chance to speak with our Client Relations Coordinator. They will ask you a few questions, but mostly they will listen to you describe the type of remodeling project you’re interested in discussing. They will also schedule an appointment for you to meet with one of our Project Developers and the renovation lifecycle begins.
Step 1: Meet your Project Developer (1-3 weeks)
A Project Developer will first meet with you in your home (or if you prefer, a virtual meeting via FaceTime or Zoom can be arranged!) to learn more about your project and discuss your budget range. They will explain the details of our process and scheduling goals. You’ll begin to understand what The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build is all about: dedicated remodeling professionals who collaborate and deliver experience, high-quality design and skilled construction.
If we are a good fit and you choose to move forward with our Team, you will commit to a Design Agreement by paying the design fee.
Step 2: Meet your Designer (2-4 weeks)
The next scheduled meeting will also be in your home. Your Project Developer will introduce you to your Designer. Your Designer will conduct a detailed interview to discover your likes and dislikes about your home. Easy and fun collaboration will be enabled through a Houzz Ideabook! You will also establish the Design Schedule by setting the dates for all the subsequent meetings in the design process. So, have your family calendar handy!
During this time your Project Developer and our Project Consultant will be taking photos and measurements for the As-Build drawings.
Step 3: Design Presentation (2-4 weeks)
You will meet your Team at The Cleary Company design studio office to review floor plan options for your project. After choosing your favorite floor plan, you’ll explore a variety of materials to begin the process of making product selections.
Step 4: Trade Partner Visit (2-4 weeks)
For the estimation of your project to establish the construction budget, your Project Developer and our Project Consultant will invite our Trade Partners to a scheduled visit at your home. This meeting is to ensure quote accuracy and the chance for detecting any potential issues that could create challenges in our proposed plans.
Based on your floor plan choice at the design presentation meeting, your Designer is continuing to create an overall design and details, as well as draw elevations and 3D renderings. Our Design Consultant is also involved in gathering product selection suggestions and getting quotes. All of this information will be used to establish your project’s budget.
Step 5: Construction Contract (2-4 weeks)
At this time you will again meet at The Cleary Company design studio office to review all of the details, documents, drawings, selection suggestions and Scope of Work for your project. The budget number will also be reviewed and you will decide on any options that arose during development.
If all goes as planned you will sign your Construction Contract and set the remaining meeting dates for final selection sign off!
Step 6: Selection Finalization (2-3 weeks)
At this final pre-construction meeting you will meet with your Designer and/or our Design Consultant to sign off on all selections. Once the design process is complete you will receive your official start date!
Your Project Developer will introduce you to your Project Manager and discuss project logistics. A communication plan will be established as well as a plan for how your family will experience the remodeling work. Our Team will introduce our Project APP through BuilderTrend.
After this meeting you can start to clear out the areas in your home where work will happen! The Renovation Lifecycle is nearly complete.
PROJECT LAUNCH – IT’S GAME DAY – CONSTRUCTION BEGINS!
Before buying their next home, past clients, Michael & Lori reached out to The Cleary Company once again to make sure the plan they saw for the basement would be possible. Their vision, brought to life by our Remodel-Design-Build Team, has this family enjoying the best lives in their newly remodeled basement. What was their experience like working with us?
Q & A with Michael & Lori, Clintonville
What was the goal for your remodel?
When we were in the process of buying this house, we consulted with The Cleary Company before closing to make sure we could accomplish what we were envisioning for the unfinished basement. We wanted to finish it with a gym, office nook, and play space for our kids. An added bonus was being able to make the existing laundry room a much nicer, cleaner room. We accomplished all of these things!
One end result we didn’t have as a primary goal for our basement is that it is now much more energy efficient because it is well insulated, weatherized, and has a new electrical box. We can really tell the temperature difference going from the basement to the upstairs and we recently added insulation to our first floor because of this. It is already saving us money and lowering our electricity costs, and we will benefit from rebates via the Inflation Reduction Act as well.
What is your favorite aspect of your remodeled space?
All of it! The best part is how much our 3-year-old loves the play area and has made it his own. Seeing him be creative and explore that room is the best. Eating, playing, hanging out—we do it all in the basement now.
What advice would you offer to someone who is thinking of remodeling their home?
Hire Cleary! The most impactful part of the planning stages was the thoughtfulness of the designs presented to us. We had three excellent designs to choose from and all of the designs were reflective of our needs and our desires for the space. The final design we chose mixed and matched a few of the design elements and was amended a bit to reflect some costs that had come in.
The Cleary Company was exquisite to work with on that front and made everything work to plan. The caliber of their work through the process and their communication is top notch. The end result is something that will benefit us for as long as we live here and the next family that lives here well after us.
The Cleary Company Remodel Difference
Why did you choose The Cleary Company to complete your remodeling project? We had used The Cleary Company before as they remodeled our bathroom in our prior home in German Village. They have also completed some projects at my mother’s house. We had already created a relationship with them and knew George pretty well. They don’t come much better than George Cleary and his company reflects that.
What was your favorite part of working with The Cleary Company and why?
Our favorite part, besides the final project, was the front end—everything we wanted was designed to our liking. We had to make adjustments and design choices along the way and the designer, Laura, was wonderful to work with. They really helped us make this house our own, which has been really special. Seeing our dreams become a reality has been a real thrill!
The team who worked in our basement was wonderful.
If you were asked to explain in one word why you choose to do business with The Cleary Company, what would it be?
Quality.
Would you recommend The Cleary Company?
Yes, 100%.
Just for Fun!

The first glimpse as someone drives by or visits your home is the front yard and exterior. Are you ready to take that first impression from ordinary to exquisite? We’ve got some thoughts and ideas about revamping your existing landscape and modifying your front exterior to create that curb appeal WOW factor.
The Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus, Ohio is ready to collaborate and create the changes you desire for the front of your home, help you with adding walkways, and design changes to unleash the curb appeal of your home.
Exterior Remodel Lakehouse in Columbus, OH
What are some tips that can take your curb appeal up a notch?
Create a Plan
Make a list and do your research.
What are the strengths and weaknesses as you look at your front yard and home exterior?
What do you want to keep and what needs to be changed?
Plan the Plants
Clean up the garden beds to see where you have room for new plantings.
Remove any shrubs or trees that have lived their best lives and need removal.
Divide and relocate or gift any overgrown perennials!
Invest in native plants. Indigenous plants are well-suited for your climate, usually require less maintenance and are good for the environment.
Layering creates depth and visual interest when using plants of varying heights. Balance with taller plants near the back and shorter plants in front.
Invest in grasses for enduring plumage in the fall and winter and planters for summer pops of colors.
Pathways and Hardscapes
An attractive walkway is a perfect way to create curb appeal and add a warm and inviting approach. Natural stone, bricks, and pavers can add visual interest and be a bit more elevated than concrete. Though a concrete walkway can also be beautiful!
Create focal points with a water feature, a bench, or stones along the side of the pathway. This is a wonderful place to add pots of flowers, native plants, sculptural edging, or low growing grasses.
Edging and Borders
Adding defined borders or edging along the flower beds, perimeter of the home, and path walkways keeps everything neat and visually pleasing.
Use contrasting textures such as stones, rocks, bricks, or metal to contrast with the colors of the yard, plants, and exterior features of your home.
Small boulders bring contrast and texture to an area.
Mulch suppresses weeds, cuts down on watering and creates a polished finish to your flower and perimeter beds. But don’t pile it up around your trees! That will promote disease and possibly kill them.
Outdoor Lighting
Illuminate and play up walkways, plants, and architectural features to enhance safety and create a curb appealing look for evenings and early mornings. Path lights, stair lights, bollard lights, up/downlights, garden lights, all create different looks and moods.
Consider solar lights to save energy.
Well-placed and interesting lighting on the exterior of your home, such as sconces, lantern lights, string lights, spotlights, up/downlights, and floodlights will illuminate the front door, windows, porch, trees, and bushes, as well as provide safety features.
Water Features
The benefits of adding water features to your yard include improved air quality, increased wildlife presence and believe it or not, health benefits by reducing blood pressure and stress among others.
The sound of trickling water can be captivating, relaxing and reduce noise pollution.
A small pond with moving water, a statue fountain, waterfall or bird bath all provide interest.
Home Exterior
Window boxes add color, charm, and are a welcoming visual aesthetic.
A portico or covered front porch with planters and seating will make people want to settle in and enjoy a conversation with you.
A new front door, repainting the existing door or a freshly painted front entry is the focal point and adds to the curb appeal.
Replace or repaint shutters for a refreshed and updated appearance.
Upgrade, maintain or replace gutters. (You know what we mean—sometimes those get overlooked and they can be dirty and dented.)
Upgrade any railings on the home with quality wood or metal accents!

When we begin discussions with clients about their projects, the first topic revolves around the scope of the project. Our Design-Build Team is well-versed in all scenarios!
Does it involve a refresh or do you need to change the form and function of the space?
Do you need to add a room, a 2nd floor, an outdoor living area, or take an existing home back to the original foundation and rebuild?
Researching Home Remodeling Costs
To find some answers to your budget questions, we recommend reviewing Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs Value Report. This annual publication is helpful for finding average remodeling costs in Columbus OH and many other cities and regions around the country. It also provides additional information on different building projects and their expected ROI.
To help you get started planning your kitchen, bathroom, home addition, or exterior renovation, our Design Team has assembled some projects to help guide you in your research. Each project is different and while we can’t give you a set budget before we talk with you, we do invite you to read these varying project examples and approximately priced budgets for some of our more popular renovation projects.

Home Additions
A new home addition differs from a remodel of an existing room in a home. Columbus, OH home additions typically add new square footage and require everything from the floor up to the roof. This includes the foundation, walls, ceiling, and roof as well as mechanical systems like electrical, plumbing and heating. Because you are adding something instead of changing a space that already exists, costs can vary greatly. What type of room will you be adding? Will new utilities be required? Perhaps not for a sunroom but definitely for a new bathroom. There are also many other variables, including permits, trade prices and material costs.
Adding a room to your home might be just what you need to allow you to stay in the home. Do you need more space for your children, is it time for a new owner’s suite bedroom and ensuite bath, is it time to open up walls and create a new layout, are you planning on aging in place or do you just need more room?
With new home inventory low, many people are choosing to stay in their homes and expand their footprint. Others are moving to a new-to-them home but choosing to immediately remodel the home to make it function and flow better. Whatever the case, we are a remodeling company for a reason–people want to stay in their homes in their favored neighborhoods, but require changes to the home.
Below are 3 budget ranges and 3 possible scopes to help you decide what your home addition remodeling project might cost.
Upscale – Single or 2 story addition + whole house remodel

Imagine a perfect evening—a gentle breeze, the sizzle of mouthwatering food on the grill, and a group of friends gathered around, laughing and spending time together! An outdoor kitchen can elevate any entertaining experience from ordinary to extraordinary.
A gorgeous outdoor kitchen is more than just a place to cook—it’s an experience! Creating an area with a grilling station, prep space, outdoor appliances, a sink, and bar area means there’s no need to use the indoor kitchen. By carefully considering the layout, materials, ambiance, and design, your outdoor kitchen will be the centerpiece of family and friend gatherings.
The Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus, Ohio is ready to collaborate with you and create an outdoor kitchen you’ll love. Read on for tips on what you should think about when planning for your outdoor kitchen oasis

Before the Design
Location
Where you place your kitchen and the additional seating makes a difference. It can be placed close to the home on an existing patio, along the exterior walls or deeper into the yard. Having it close to your indoor kitchen allows for quick access, especially if you’re not adding outdoor appliances, storage, or a sink. Further away can provide you with a larger and separate entertaining area and endless style opportunities.
Scope and Budget
Decide what features you must have and the ones you want. From simple to sophisticated, straightforward to extravagant, the options are endless. Do your research to explore costs. Consider which of the following are important for your entertaining needs. At the very least, you’ll want a top-of-the-line grill, prep space or countertop, beverage station, and at least one table with seating.
Other decisions to consider are:
Grill—built-in or standalone
Food prep area—free-standing or built-in countertop
Heat for cool days & nights—firepit, columns or built-in heaters
Utilities
Understand what utility lines you have and where they are. This should involve a call to your utility companies to come to mark your lines for water, gas, and electricity. If you want running water, plumbing lines will need to be installed. Gas and electricity will need to be installed as well if the proper lines don’t currently exist.
The Design
Measure
How large of a space can your backyard accommodate? Measure the area to ascertain the space available. Know what your city’s requirements are for property line setback. After measuring, you’ll need to determine different areas for a large (or smaller) kitchen—areas for cooking, dining, and entertaining and create a drawing for layout options using those numbers. Will there be enough room for all you want?
Layout a Floorplan
Visualize how the space will look by laying out the kitchen components on your drawing. Flooring, built-in features, countertops, cabinets, the sink, and outdoor refrigerators and appliances are the first things to plan for. It might even be helpful to tape off the areas and features outside in the space where the kitchen will reside, in order to move around the space and make sure what you want created will fit the area. Include the furniture and accessories in this step.
Working with an experienced professional, such as the Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company, is advantageous during this phase of planning. Not only do we walk through all of these steps with you, but we also provide our years of experience and expertise to ensure an effective layout, functionality, and compliance with setbacks and utilities. Not to mention helping you get the biggest bang for your buck!
Think Functionality
An outdoor kitchen, when truly elevated in design, should have four zones for maximum functionality. A cold area for the refrigerator and ice maker, a hot area for the grill and other cooking appliances, the sink/bar in the wet area, and a dry area for meal prep, extra counter space, and serving area. Also, consider the direction the wind blows in your backyard.
Additional Things to Consider
Cooking on more than just a grill—pizza oven, smoker, griddle, burners, etc.
Choosing appliances that are versatile if you don’t want all separate ones.
Separate space for lounging or even an outdoor living room is important if you want more than just the kitchen and a table and will really set your outdoor living space apart.
Here in Ohio, it’s important to think about winterizing and insulating appliances and counters to protect them from the winter elements.
If you are going to utilize storage in your outdoor kitchen, you need to consider the critters that might have access and plan accordingly. (We don’t encourage keeping any food or paper products outside.)
Weatherproof materials are a necessity, especially if your kitchen is open to the weather elements. Stainless steel, wood, cement, brick, stone, HDPE (high-density polyethylene), granite, concrete, and tile are all available options for various parts of your design.
The possibilities are almost endless with outdoor kitchens. Designing your backyard to fit your family’s lifestyle is key to elevating your home. The Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company can collaborate with you to create an outdoor kitchen you will never want to leave. So, let’s fire up the grill, raise a glass, and savor the memories made in your outdoor oasis!

Design Details to Consider:
Using pocket or “barn style” sliding doors instead of swinging doors. If using a pocket door isn’t possible in your current space, reversing the existing door so that it swings out will give you space to move around.
Keep as much off the floor as possible to keep the room open. Consider a wall-hung toilet, a floating vanity, or wall storage, instead of cabinet storage.
Large tiles with minimal grout lines or tiles running in a diagonal pattern give the illusion of a larger room. Additionally, running wall tiles all the way to the ceiling draws your eye up and makes the room feel higher.
Keep it simple with soft, natural, neutral shades. A light color palette will create the appearance of a larger bathroom, but don’t be afraid to add a splash of dark or bold color for drama as an accent. If you choose a darker color, add pops of light, bright neutrals with the fixtures, countertops, and towels. Ultimately, color is such a personal choice.
Maybe it’s time for a wet room—with a spa shower and freestanding tub in the same space or eliminating the bathtub completely!
If you really must have a tub but need to save on space, choose a shower/tub combo and use a curved shower curtain rod.
Use compact fixtures designed for small spaces. Our Design Consultants can help source in-stock and custom pieces from a wide variety of suppliers in our network.
Lighting Matters:
The right lights will make a room feel larger.
Layer the lighting with under cabinet lights, mounted wall sconces, overhead recessed cans and illuminated medicine cabinets will create a mood or style and will cut down on shadows.
Magical Mirrors:
Strategically placed mirrors create the illusion of space, reflect light, and brighten up bathrooms, especially in bathrooms without windows.
Use a large mirror above the sink or one on a medicine cabinet. If there is a window, strategically place a mirror to bounce natural light around the room.
Install a beautiful, mirrored recessed medicine cabinet above the sink with a door that slides up like in the photo below!
Go vertical with floor-to-ceiling shelving and cabinets. Bathroom essentials, towels, and toiletries are within reach but not taking up valuable square footage.
Adding built-in or better yet floating shelves above the toilet is another way to save space in a small footprint.
Recessed niches in the walls whether in the shower, above the toilet or near the vanity also save valuable space within a small bathroom.
Install the largest vanity that will fit maximum drawer storage.
Towel bars and hooks on the back of a bathroom door can free up any available wall space for shelving.
Custom storage solutions like pull-out makeup mirrors, in-drawer outlets, and divided drawers will keep all your toiletry needs from cluttering the countertops.
