  • Creative Ways to Spruce Up Your Home for Fall

Creative Ways to Spruce Up Your Home for Fall

As the air turns crisp and leaves change color, your weekends fill with trips to apple orchards and pumpkin patches. Yes, fall has fully arrived in Columbus, OH! It’s time to cozy up your home for the upcoming chilly seasons. Revel in the beauty of this time of year by infusing style, comfort, and warmth into your home. Our Designers are all over these great ideas and you’ll probably see a few of them in our office here at The Cleary Company.

Hopefully, some of these creative ideas will inspire you!

    “Welcome Home” Entryways

    • Fill your front entryway with fall décor for the ultimate curb appeal. Pumpkins, autumnal wreaths, mums, seasonal doormats, all create that pumpkin spice feel.
    • Soft, warm-toned outdoor accent lights create a welcoming glow as nighttime arrives earlier in the day. Now is the time to install solar lighting on your front walkway to create a welcoming ambiance.
    • As fall transitions to winter, simply swap out with winter wreaths, holiday décor, a blanket on the chair on your porch, and winter greenery.

Decorate Tables — Set a Place for Guests

    • Is your formal dining room seldom used these days? Keep these spaces alive by creating seasonal scenes.
    • Use Autumn and winter or holiday placemats, captivating centerpieces, and themed dishes to set the mood for the seasons.
    • Want to keep it simple? Seasonal color schemes might be all you need if you want to create an easy, but stylish change to the table.

    Cozy Up the Living Spaces

    • Nothing says fall like soft, fluffy blankets and pillows on a couch or chair. It just makes you want to snuggle up and read a book, watch TV, or just watch the fire.
    • This might be the time to upgrade your fireplace. A new, updated mantel, interesting tiles, or fresh paint will make a big difference. And while you are at it, rearrange the furniture or add some stools and chairs to take advantage of the warmth from the fireplace.
    • If your living spaces are wood or tile floors, this is the time to add rugs (even layer them) in these rooms. Adding extra warmth and visual interest will beat the worst of the dreary, cold, days.
    • Extra lighting, using floor or table lamps, can add a bit of brightness to a darker area.
    • Change out your summer sheers for thicker or heavier drapes. This adds a touch of elegance and keeps out any drafts.

    Comfy Bedrooms

    • Damp Ohio falls can be cold! Swap out your regular bedding for soft, warm flannel sheets and layer with an extra blanket.
    • As days get shorter and the nights get darker earlier, stringing fairy lights in your bedrooms is welcome ambient glow, is festive and adds a magical touch to any kid’s room.

    Bathroom Vibes

    • Scented candles create a calm and soothing feel to a bathroom. And the options are endless for this time of year. Pumpkin spice, anyone?
    • Seasonal-colored plush towels are easy ways to change up and create a cozy oasis.
    • Install a towel warmer to ward off the early morning chills.
    • If you’re remodeling your bathroom, consider radiant heated floors. You’ll never have another chilly morning in the bathroom.

    Outdoor Living

    • Do you want to stay outdoors as long as possible? Now is the time to install a fire pit or fire table on your porch or patio.
    • Add comfortable seating and cozy blankets to create the perfect experience.
    • Outdoor lighting—string lights, lanterns, sconces, or solar lights all add to the ability to stay out later at night, especially if entertaining.
    • Fall and football go hand in hand. Is it time to install an outdoor television to watch sports or a movie with the kids?

Our Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company is here to collaborate with you for all your remodeling needs, no matter what season it is!

  • Designing the Perfect Outdoor Kitchen

    Designing the Perfect Outdoor Kitchen

Elevate and expand your entertaining space with a kitchen in your backyard!

Imagine a perfect evening—a gentle breeze, the sizzle of mouthwatering food on the grill, and a group of friends gathered around, laughing and spending time together! An outdoor kitchen can elevate any entertaining experience from ordinary to extraordinary.

A gorgeous outdoor kitchen is more than just a place to cook—it’s an experience! Creating an area with a grilling station, prep space, outdoor appliances, a sink, and bar area means there’s no need to use the indoor kitchen. By carefully considering the layout, materials, ambiance, and design, your outdoor kitchen will be the centerpiece of family and friend gatherings.

The Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus, Ohio is ready to collaborate with you and create an outdoor kitchen you’ll love. Read on for tips on what you should think about when planning for your outdoor kitchen oasis

Need some inspiration? Watch the Outdoor Living Spaces playlist on our YouTube channel!

    Before the Design

    Location

Where you place your kitchen and the additional seating makes a difference. It can be placed close to the home on an existing patio, along the exterior walls or deeper into the yard. Having it close to your indoor kitchen allows for quick access, especially if you’re not adding outdoor appliances, storage, or a sink. Further away can provide you with a larger and separate entertaining area and endless style opportunities.

    Scope and Budget

Decide what features you must have and the ones you want. From simple to sophisticated, straightforward to extravagant, the options are endless. Do your research to explore costs. Consider which of the following are important for your entertaining needs. At the very least, you’ll want a top-of-the-line grill, prep space or countertop, beverage station, and at least one table with seating.

    Other decisions to consider are:

    • Grill—built-in or standalone
    • Food prep area—free-standing or built-in countertop
    • Sink with or without plumbing/water
    • Countertop—free-standing or built-in
    • Flooring—deck, concrete or paver patio
    • Refrigeration—beverage drawers, wine fridge, portable coolers
    • Cabinetry and storage
    • Trash and recycling receptacles
    • Tables, stools or chairs, bar counter
    • Shade—landscape, awning, pergola, roof extension
    • Lighting
    • Décor
    • Heat for cool days & nights—firepit, columns or built-in heaters

    Utilities

Understand what utility lines you have and where they are. This should involve a call to your utility companies to come to mark your lines for water, gas, and electricity. If you want running water, plumbing lines will need to be installed. Gas and electricity will need to be installed as well if the proper lines don’t currently exist.

    The Design

    Measure

How large of a space can your backyard accommodate? Measure the area to ascertain the space available. Know what your city’s requirements are for property line setback. After measuring, you’ll need to determine different areas for a large (or smaller) kitchen—areas for cooking, dining, and entertaining and create a drawing for layout options using those numbers. Will there be enough room for all you want?

    Layout a Floorplan

Visualize how the space will look by laying out the kitchen components on your drawing. Flooring, built-in features, countertops, cabinets, the sink, and outdoor refrigerators and appliances are the first things to plan for. It might even be helpful to tape off the areas and features outside in the space where the kitchen will reside, in order to move around the space and make sure what you want created will fit the area. Include the furniture and accessories in this step.

Working with an experienced professional, such as the Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company, is advantageous during this phase of planning. Not only do we walk through all of these steps with you, but we also provide our years of experience and expertise to ensure an effective layout, functionality, and compliance with setbacks and utilities. Not to mention helping you get the biggest bang for your buck!

    Think Functionality

An outdoor kitchen, when truly elevated in design, should have four zones for maximum functionality. A cold area for the refrigerator and ice maker, a hot area for the grill and other cooking appliances, the sink/bar in the wet area, and a dry area for meal prep, extra counter space, and serving area. Also, consider the direction the wind blows in your backyard.

    Additional Things to Consider

    • Cooking on more than just a grill—pizza oven, smoker, griddle, burners, etc.
    • Choosing appliances that are versatile if you don’t want all separate ones.
    • Separate space for lounging or even an outdoor living room is important if you want more than just the kitchen and a table and will really set your outdoor living space apart.
    • Here in Ohio, it’s important to think about winterizing and insulating appliances and counters to protect them from the winter elements.
    • If you are going to utilize storage in your outdoor kitchen, you need to consider the critters that might have access and plan accordingly. (We don’t encourage keeping any food or paper products outside.)
    • Weatherproof materials are a necessity, especially if your kitchen is open to the weather elements. Stainless steel, wood, cement, brick, stone, HDPE (high-density polyethylene), granite, concrete, and tile are all available options for various parts of your design.

The possibilities are almost endless with outdoor kitchens. Designing your backyard to fit your family’s lifestyle is key to elevating your home. The Remodel-Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company can collaborate with you to create an outdoor kitchen you will never want to leave. So, let’s fire up the grill, raise a glass, and savor the memories made in your outdoor oasis!

  • Patio & Deck Season is here!

Patio & Deck Season is here!

    Are You Ready?

It’s about that time—to fire up the grill and firepit, toast a glass with friends, and while away the evenings and weekends on your patio or deck. Is your deck the livable space you want it to be? Does it need a refresh with some cool appliances and furniture? Or maybe it’s time for a new deck or patio. No matter where you are in your deck/patio dream, what you are envisioning can happen.

Our Design Team at The Cleary Company Design-Build-Remodel in Columbus, Ohio has gathered some of their best ideas to help you create the deck or patio you want for your backyard. And remember, our Team is here to help you create the outdoor living space you want for your home!

Over the past few years, our outdoor living spaces have evolved into everyday use, not just a place to grill on the weekends and hang out with friends. It’s additional living space, an office, a homework area, an area for family gatherings and relaxing—all on a daily basis.

Turn your patio or deck into a haven with these innovative ideas from building to decorating.

    Outdoor Living Room

Your patio or deck should be treated as another room of your house. This begs the question— how are you going to use it? Create a seating area, a dining area, a place to cook, an office area, a kids’ play space, and more. Comfy weatherproof couches and chairs, a dining table, blankets, pillows, ambient lighting, water features, and storage will help you define and use the spaces on your patio or deck.

    Furniture features

The furniture you choose creates the look and feel you want for your outdoor living. You’ll want it to be comfortable, stylish and durable—and as weatherproof as possible. On a deck or patio, furniture has to stand up to wind, rain, sun, changes in temperature, and how it can be cleaned.

    • Many materials are used for outdoor furniture, all with their own pros and cons. Know your environment and the impact it has on the furniture as well as how much wear and tear it can take (we see you kids).
      • Wood furniture is easy to work with and looks beautiful. Softer woods don’t hold up as well to the elements over time, while hardwoods are more weather resistant. We love the information about the various types of wood furniture found on this blog from Décor Outdoor.
      • Metal is very durable and works well for side tables, coffee tables and chairs & couches covered with cushions. Metal can rust and might be harder to move if stored inside during the winter.
    • Be sustainable with recycled plastic outdoor furniture, with brands like Polywood , Comfort Craft and Luxcraft, or Sunbrella), or eco-friendly reclaimed wood, rattan, wicker and bamboo.
    • Don’t forget to have small tables available for drinks, electronics, and plates.

    Bring in Color

Earthy, calm, and neutral or bold, bright, and colorful? Someplace in between? Pillows, cushions, outdoor rugs, planters, accent chairs with pops of color, and botanical prints are just a few ways to facilitate some color. This is a fun way to let the personality of your home shine through.

    Lighting

You don’t just use your deck or patio during the day. Evenings are meant for neighborhood fun, with the kids running around and the adults hanging by the fire table, chilling with a cold one. Keep the evening going with a bit of illumination. Don’t let the fun stop just because it’s dark.

    • Install LED strip lighting along the deck to create safety points
    • Place solar lights to light up pathways, landscape borders and decks
    • String bulb lights under the pergola or across the deck for some ambiance
    • Torches and candles create mood lighting and help with bug control (citronella is the go-to scent)

    Control those temps

Right, we get it—we are outside and while we can’t control the weather, we can control aspects of the temperature on our patios when it’s really hot or if it’s a chilly evening.

We can use these great options!

    • Overhead heating lamps
    • Firepit tables or fire pits, using gas, propane or wood
    • Ceiling fans
    • Outdoor evaporative coolers (aka, swamp coolers)

All of these can cool us down and warm us up, keeping us outside longer! And who doesn’t want that?

    Summer Shade

During a sweltering summer day, shade is a necessity. If you’re not blessed with a yard filled with mature trees, there are other ways you can create shade.

    • A pergola provides dappled shade
    • Part of your patio can have some type of roofing structure
    • Oversized umbrellas, covering tables, chairs or part of the patio, create pockets of shade

    Go Green with Plants

A deck or patio immediately feels comfortable and homey with plants. Border plants surrounding the area create areas of privacy, as well as visual interest.

Perennials, succulents, flowering baskets, herb container gardens, and vertical gardens are fun ways to provide pops of color and natural beauty. You’ll want to spend all your time outdoors when you bring flowers and foliage into the space.

    Cook in an Outdoor Kitchen

Depending on the kind of cook you are will determine what type of outdoor kitchen you want. Do you just want to chill, entertain while grilling, or create a whole new kitchen for cooking outside?

    Your kitchen could include…

    • A grill—either coal or propane
    • A mini-fridge for condiments, drinks and prep items
    • A pizza oven
    • A sink for washing hands and quick clean-ups
    • Bar space, with a kegerator, wine fridge, and drawers for mixologist items
    • Granite or concrete countertops that will hold up to the weather
    • Storage

This article from BBQGuys lists some of the top-rated appliances and equipment for your outdoor kitchen—check out the bar centers! A built-in trash container saves you trips to the garbage can and a dishwasher might just be a game-changer!

    Outdoor Office

Are you still working from home? Create an area of your porch, patio, or deck to allow you to spend time outside while working. That Zoom background will be the envy of others!

  • 5 Backyard Entertaining Trends

    5 Backyard Entertaining Trends

While we want to get out and resume our lives as we knew them, most of us are still playing it safe and staying home as much as possible here in Central Ohio. As spring arrives and with it the promise of summer and fall, we’re looking to our backyards for entertaining and relaxing. But is it the oasis you’ve always wanted?

On trend for 2021 is the need to make our backyards better. We crave areas to dine outdoors, spend time with the family, create a staycation feel and have a private outdoor escape. It’s become an extension of our indoor living. A reimagining of the space that we have available. It’s a shift to making it functional for a place to escape from the house. Did you know it can also boost the overall value of your home? For the latest local data on ROI for home remodeling projects check out Remodeling magazine’s Cost vs Value report.

If you are searching for a backyard that makes you want to spend more time outdoors then read on for inspiration and ideas from our Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company in Columbus OH.

What can you do to your backyard to create the outdoor living oasis of your dreams?

1 – Outdoor living – After spending so much time at home, we really see the value in being outdoors as much as possible. When creating an outdoor living space, we suggest considering these items:

    • Large tables for socially distanced gatherings or neighborhood get-togethers!
    • Comfortable weatherproof furniture placed in designated groupings for conversation or cozy alone time.
    • Water features for background noise.
    • Lighting- string lights, torches, and solar fixtures. Consider safety as well as atmosphere – lighted pathways and placing ambient lighting over seating areas.

2 – Outdoor kitchens – Maybe you’re ready for more than just a grill on the patio. The outdoor kitchen continues its popularity with homeowners. We love implementing these features in our designs:

    • Built-in grill
    • Beverage refrigerator
    • Kegerator
    • Countertop for food prep and entertaining
    • Prep and/or cleanup sink
    • Pizza oven – portable or built-in

3 – Pools – The addition of a pool continues to be on the rise. It was very hard to find above-ground pools last year, and no one (that didn’t already have one planned) was able to have an inground pool built. They don’t have to be big; just a way to relax, cool off and float around. When is the best time to call a pool contractor? At least a year before you want to be using it.

4 – Decks and patios – For most of us, a deck or patio is what summer means. Hanging out with the family, watching the kids play, having neighbors over for a cookout – it all happens on a deck or patio.

    • Create regions on your patio or deck – for the grill or outdoor kitchen, seating areas, and a table. A multi-level deck is a great option.
    • Choose materials that will weather well.
    • Take advantage of a walk-out basement by adding a patio and sliding doors.

5 – 3 season rooms and sunrooms – Large picture windows, sliding doors, retractable screens and heat allow these rooms to be used for most, if not all, of the year. They serve as an extension of the interior living space, anchor the backyard space and increase the overall function and enjoyment of your home. Our Design Team can create several options to fit your needs.

    • Build additional square feet onto your home’s existing footprint.
    • Enclose an existing patio with either a pergola, roof and/or walls.
    • Replace screens on an existing porch with new insulated windows.
    • Remodel existing rooms to open up the views of your yard.

Other things to consider when planning your backyard living space.

Shade – Unless you are blessed with many trees, you will want some shade for hot summer days. Many options are available to create shade. These features also serve to anchor a space, add character and create welcoming spaces.

    • Retractable shades and motorized screens
    • Umbrellas or shade sails
    • Pergola or covered porch
    • Gazebo

Gardens – Gardens are having a moment for more people and creating a sustainable garden is one of the most searched items on Google. Why not try a raised garden bed, install a drip irrigation system, or just design some container plantings?  Native plants are on the rise to help bring back bees and other pollinators, so talk with a garden nursery for advice on the best plants to use in your yard.

Technology – We love being connected, even if we’re outside. A Saturday football game setup, a spot to connect and work from home, or just some fun perks all add comfort and fun to the backyard design.

    • Electricity for outlets, heaters, lighting, and media
    • WIFI
    • USB ports
    • Bluetooth speakers

Among the many things the last year has shown us is what we love about our homes and what we need to change. On the plus side, any upgrades you do in your yard also adds value to your home. If you’re ready to create your outdoor oasis or remodel to include a new sunroom, 3 season porch, patio or deck, we’d love to talk with you. Our Remodel – Design – Build Team will collaborate and create what you’re missing in your outdoor living spaces.

7 Amazing Before & After Backyard Transformations

  • Lodge Style Porch Addition | Columbus, OH

Lodge Style Porch Addition | Columbus, OH

Project Spotlight – Award Winning Outdoor Living Space Adds Function & Fun

In 2020, sheltering in place with family is easier to do when you have a new space to enjoy. Having a large outdoor space means you can also safely entertain a few friends too! Our Team successfully redesigned our clients’ front entry with the addition of a warm and inviting lodge porch.

Completed in the summer of 2020, our clients’ porch addition came just in time. Our clients’ 1978 brick ranch’s front entrance was overshadowed by an old unused greenhouse atrium. Not only did the front exterior lack curb appeal the greenhouse blocked off views of the gorgeous countryside.

The new front entranced is wider and features French doors and two sidelights all with full glass panels for bringing connection with the inside and outdoors. A new front sidewalk and landscaping completes this project and creates amazing curb appeal!

Project Profile – NARI Regional CotY Award Winner

Marc Aubry, GreenScapes Head of Residential Design, explained, “The homeowner wanted to create an outdoor space for entertaining and enjoying nature. That project is a good example of bringing professionals together early in the project and being able to create a really nice indoor/outdoor space, and transitional spaces.” In the case of this home in Upper Arlington, Aubry said, “The homeowner was very interested in birds and wildlife, and we were able to accomplish that. She has no turf in her back yard. It’s all plants—plants that attract wildlife and birds. We did the design, and The Cleary Company came back and completed the custom carpentry. It was a real team effort,” Aubry noted. “The home addition The Cleary Company built included a lot of glass walls. It is very nice to sit in the home and look outside and watch the activity in the garden, the entire back yard. The large glass windows have a special reflective coating so that birds won’t fly into it.”

March Aubry from GreenScapes redesigned the entire backyard landscape in which all of the grass was replaced with mulch and hardscapes. Numerous bird friendly plants, bushes and even a water feature were installed to create a suburban wildlife friendly ecosystem. A custom cedar pergola was designed and built by The Cleary Company to provide shade on the new paver patio. The custom wood burning stone fireplace is uniquely positioned at an angle to provide privacy from neighbors.
