Renovation Lifecycle – Design & Estimating

Are you planning a home remodel in Columbus, Ohio? Want to know more about what it means to hire a Design-Build firm? Read on to see how the experienced professionals at The Cleary Company work with clients to design and build projects that meet their remodeling needs and their budget.

The Remodel-Design-Build process simplified. We get to know you and you get to know us. Discovering your unique style and vision for your home is a critical step in the development of your project. Together, we work to find the answers to your project’s biggest questions. With guidance from your Project Developer and inspiration from your Designer, we work to create the home of your dreams within your budget. Then, our skilled Project Managers and Lead Carpenters provide you high-quality installation and service. You sit back and watch your dream come together. When the renovation lifecycle has completed, all that is left to do is enjoy your beautiful new space!

After you’ve given us a call or submitted a new project form online you’ll have the chance to speak with our Client Relations Coordinator. They will ask you a few questions, but mostly they will listen to you describe the type of remodeling project you’re interested in discussing. They will also schedule an appointment for you to meet with one of our Project Developers and the renovation lifecycle begins.

Step 1: Meet your Project Developer (1-3 weeks)

A Project Developer will first meet with you in your home (or if you prefer, a virtual meeting via FaceTime or Zoom can be arranged!) to learn more about your project and discuss your budget range. They will explain the details of our process and scheduling goals. You’ll begin to understand what The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build is all about: dedicated remodeling professionals who collaborate and deliver experience, high-quality design and skilled construction.

If we are a good fit and you choose to move forward with our Team, you will commit to a Design Agreement by paying the design fee.

Step 2: Meet your Designer (2-4 weeks)

The next scheduled meeting will also be in your home. Your Project Developer will introduce you to your Designer. Your Designer will conduct a detailed interview to discover your likes and dislikes about your home. Easy and fun collaboration will be enabled through a Houzz Ideabook! You will also establish the Design Schedule by setting the dates for all the subsequent meetings in the design process. So, have your family calendar handy!

During this time your Project Developer and our Project Consultant will be taking photos and measurements for the As-Build drawings.

Step 3: Design Presentation (2-4 weeks)

You will meet your Team at The Cleary Company design studio office to review floor plan options for your project. After choosing your favorite floor plan, you’ll explore a variety of materials to begin the process of making product selections.

Step 4: Trade Partner Visit (2-4 weeks)

For the estimation of your project to establish the construction budget, your Project Developer and our Project Consultant will invite our Trade Partners to a scheduled visit at your home. This meeting is to ensure quote accuracy and the chance for detecting any potential issues that could create challenges in our proposed plans.

Based on your floor plan choice at the design presentation meeting, your Designer is continuing to create an overall design and details, as well as draw elevations and 3D renderings. Our Design Consultant is also involved in gathering product selection suggestions and getting quotes. All of this information will be used to establish your project’s budget.

Step 5: Construction Contract (2-4 weeks)

At this time you will again meet at The Cleary Company design studio office to review all of the details, documents, drawings, selection suggestions and Scope of Work for your project. The budget number will also be reviewed and you will decide on any options that arose during development.

If all goes as planned you will sign your Construction Contract and set the remaining meeting dates for final selection sign off!

Step 6: Selection Finalization (2-3 weeks)

At this final pre-construction meeting you will meet with your Designer and/or our Design Consultant to sign off on all selections. Once the design process is complete you will receive your official start date!

Step 7: OnSite PreConstruction Meeting (1-2 weeks prior to Project Launch date)

Your Project Developer will introduce you to your Project Manager and discuss project logistics. A communication plan will be established as well as a plan for how your family will experience the remodeling work. Our Team will introduce our Project APP through BuilderTrend.

After this meeting you can start to clear out the areas in your home where work will happen! The Renovation Lifecycle is nearly complete.

  • Decluttering Your Home with Frog Hauling

Decluttering Your Home with Frog Hauling

Spring is here! It’s a good time to clean and declutter your home. Remodeling, DIY projects, and general decluttering have one big thing in common—what to do with everything you’re removing from the home. When our Remodel-Design-Build Team at the Cleary Company in Columbus, Ohio remodels a home, the project sizes range from a whole house transformation or addition to a renovation of a single room like a bathroom or basement.

For the removal of construction debris on our job site, we rely on our preferred vendor and friends at Frog Hauling. They are the largest mini dumpster rental and hauling service in the Columbus Metro area and they provide our Team and clients with the right sized container to fit each project’s needs for debris disposal.

When we see Frog Hauling dumpsters all over town, we know they’re also being used for your DIY and decluttering projects.

How the “Dumpster” Leads to Something New at Your Home

Decluttering is typically at the bottom of everyone’s list but clutter in our home or business can negatively impact our everyday routine. Decluttering is an important way to practice self-care because it helps you take control of your home, your life and your “stuff” to improve your overall well-being.

Are you ready to tackle the closets, basement, garage, or whole house and get rid of junk and clutter? Or are you ready to remodel your home and make it work better for you? (We can help you with that!) However you choose to #LiveBetter, you might want to use Frog Hauling to help you easily and affordably remove what you don’t want.

Four Reasons to Use a Dumpster Rental to Declutter

1 – Tackle Larger Projects – Many homeowners find decluttering their homes to be a challenge if you have bigger items to throw away. By embracing dumpster rental from a trusted hauling company, you can focus on these large-scale projects. Tossing outdated equipment and belongings that clutter your garage and shed won’t require additional logistics.

2 – Provides a Timeline – When you have a busy household and work obligations, you may delay seasonal cleaning projects. By scheduling a dumpster rental, you’ll create a timeline and have the motivation to complete your project. With the tools in place to toss, recycle, donate, and organize your home, getting started—and finishing—will be that much easier.

3 – Easy Toss & Recycle – Based on your needs, you can rent various dumpster sizes. Talk to your hauling company and let them know if you have recyclables, glass bottles, roofing materials, yard debris, or other items that may not be suitable for the garbage dump. Your junk hauling company can help you create a dumpster system that’s sustainable while aligning with your needs.

4 – Convenience – Best of all, dumpster rental makes decluttering simple and easy. You won’t have to worry about overfilled trash cans or finding an appropriate method to toss your unwanted junk. With plenty of space to get organized, seasonal home cleaning will be quick, seamless, and rewarding.

If you need a reliable dumpster rental service to complete your home cleaning project, contact Frog Hauling. Based in Columbus, OH, homeowners throughout Franklin County have easy access to affordable, well-maintained, and convenient debris hauling services. George & Marty brought their companies together in 2020 to “fill the dumpster” with backpacks and school supplies for Volunteers of America’s Operation Backpack. That year we collected a record number 133 filled backpacks plus additional boxes of bags and school supplies. Each year VoA’s collections help more than 5,000 in central Ohio enter the classroom equipped to be successful in their education.

  • 2023 Home Design Trends

    2023 Home Design Trends

It’s a new year, so that means our Design Team at The Cleary Company Remodel-Design-Build in Columbus Ohio is looking at what’s trending in home design. While we love the classics, some trends are worth looking at and incorporating into projects for our clients, especially kitchen and baths. After all, some trends are here to stay!

The NKBA recently released its 2023 Design Trends Report where they surveyed almost 600 industry members. We’ve combed through the information and summarized it below. So, grab a cup of coffee or tea, settle in and spend a few minutes reading.

    Home Design

Storage & Functionality are a Must

    • Kitchens and bathrooms are top spaces that need more storage and better function.
    • Remove or open up walls to add more storage and define spaces.
    • Increase the footprint of a kitchen to add space for a larger pantry, beverage bar, second dishwasher or other additional appliances.
    • Larger islands and in some cases two islands, provide better functionality for dining, food prep and homework or work-from-home needs.
    • Increase or rearrange the footprint of a bathroom for a larger shower, more closet space, or even a sitting area.
    • Incorporate Universal Design principles into your new bathroom. Features such as low or zero-threshold showers, benches, grab bars, and wider doorways are a key part of functionality.
    • Keep countertops clear of small appliances. A well-designed pantry can be more than just a place for spices and staples.
    • Select fixtures and finishes that are easy to clean for your updated kitchen and bathrooms. Materials like quartz countertops and panels plus large format tiles limit or eliminate grout and are easy to clean.

    Oh, We Love Some Color

    • Shades of white still dominate, as well as the use of wood tones but color is making it’s way back into kitchens and baths.
    • Greens and blues are perennial top choices for kitchens, but don’t be afraid to dip into other colors on the spectrum.
    • Incorporate bold accent colors like a non-shiny metallic, matte black or brushed gold.

Be Environmentally Friendly & Connect with Nature

    • Choose products made with sustainable materials and by companies whose practices are gentle or help the Earth.
    • Fixtures and finishes like LED lighting, VOC-free paints and energy-efficient appliances, head the list.
    • Choose more oversized windows and add glass doors to bring views of the outdoors inside.
    • Outdoor living spaces create a connection with your indoor spaces and increase the livable space in your home.

    Let’s Not Forget About Technology

    • Choose technology for your home that increases its function and efficiency.
    • Install motion-controlled lighting and touchless faucets.
    • Choose appliances that are multifunctional and can do “everything,” making life easier.
    • Use mobile devices or voice controls to control appliances, lighting, music and tv’s.
    • Smart or programable controls in bathrooms help with shower and faucet temperatures, heated floors, bidet toilets, mirrors, and lighting.

As our Design Team works with clients, we see that kitchens and bathrooms continue to evolve into larger, multifunctional spaces. Many people are still working and entertaining at home, and that doesn’t seem to be going away. Make 2023 the year to remodel your home with our Design-Build Team at The Cleary Company!

  • Why Should You Hire a Design-Build Remodeler?

Why Should You Hire a Design-Build Remodeler?

Making a major change to your home can be exciting and rewarding. It can also seem overwhelming. There are many ways to approach a remodeling project. Some of the most common are DiY or hiring a handyman, jack of all trades, or general contractor. For larger, more complex projects there are two options – hire an architect and/or designer and then a general contractor or hire a Design-Build remodeling firm.

Most people think that the design and the construction of a remodel project are two separate disciplines that require hiring multiple companies, but they do not have to be. In fact, in most cases it’s better if they are not! With a Design-Build approach to remodeling, one company is responsible for the entire project. There is a true collaboration with a Team of professionals working with you from initial concept, architecture, material selections, permitting and construction. Throughout the process, your budget is respected by your designated Team.

In contrast, working with a general contractor begins with you first finding an architect and/or designer who may or may not know what things cost or what things might be overly complex and costly to build. In this scenario, you will be responsible for arranging the selection and delivery for many of your project’s materials, fixtures, appliances, etc. This approach typically ends up costing you more energy, time and money.

    Design-Build Defined

The term “Design-Build” is used in many different industries today. A company using a Design-Build model of business is basically a “one-stop-shop” or “turn-key” firm. In the remodeling industry, this means one company is responsible for the design, planning and estimating of a project, as well as the scheduling and construction of a project. A truer budget target is established at the front end. Costs of various scenarios are discussed, giving you options. You can then make educated decisions on whether adding a more expensive feature is actually worth the extra money.

This approach differs from the more traditional approach of hiring an architect and/or design firm to create plans for a remodel of your home. You then bid the plans out to one or more general contractors whom you then hire to manage the construction of your project.

At The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build in Columbus Ohio, we collaborate with you on any project, large or small, residential or light commercial. Our Team walks with you every step of the way while utilizing decades of design and remodeling experience. Our process ensures organization, timeliness, communication, and a high level of skilled craftsmanship. We take care of it all – initial concept through construction. We live and love the details!

    Benefits of Design-Build

    • Communication is with one company from start to finish.
    • A Team approach to your project.
    • Savings of your time & energy.
    • Planning, Design & Value Engineering for your budget.
    • Detailed Scope of Work & Construction Drawings.
    • Clear certainty of your project’s price.

Which approach is right for your remodel?

Consider all of your options and understand the pros and cons of each. Whatever approach you decide to take for your next remodeling project, we recommend doing research and educating yourself. There’s 24/7/365 access to information these days online but it’s also smart to get recommendations from those you know. Ask a friend, neighbor or co-worker how their experience was with the company they last hired.

Consider these three questions we believe you should be able to answer “yes” to before hiring your remodeler.

    1. Am I comfortable with the people who will be in my home for weeks, possibly months?
    2. Do I trust the people and the process outlined by the remodeler for my project?
    3. Do I understand all the costs and potential over-runs for the project I desire?

  • Job Training, Growth and Career Opportunities

Job Training, Growth and Career Opportunities

When you begin a new job, do you expect there will be opportunities for growth, education and on-the-job training? Are you stuck right now at a job that feels like there is no chance for advancement? Here at The Cleary Company, we hire people who want to learn, challenge themselves, and are excited to grow! We see our employer responsibilities as a cheerleader, a mentor, and a developer of new leaders in the industry.

Pete & Eric, Two Project Managers – Two Different Paths

Pete Mossman started on our Team as a Warranty Specialist in 2017. Since then he’s moved to a carpenter position, and now he’s a Project Manager for our bath2BATH division. Pete says this about the opportunities offered to him by the Cleary Company. “Before I worked here, one of the biggest challenges I faced was the lack of direction. There is a big gap between being a “helper” and a project manager. Knowing how to move up to different opportunities in your career is empowering. The Cleary Company has given me the direction, vision and encouragement I’ve needed to move forward. I get to work with others to learn skills I’m interested in developing.”

After earning a degree in Civil Engineering, Eric Isler began his career in the construction industry by working on large commercial building projects. He joined The Cleary Company as a carpenter in 2017 and after just a year was promoted to Project Manager. The first project he was assigned? The large-scale commercial remodel of our new office and design studio. Eric believes The Cleary Company has supported his growth in many ways. “They have put me in situations where I can both succeed and be challenged. I’m surrounded by very experienced and talented people. Whenever I have questions, I can tap into one of our carpenters, or Rob, a Senior Project Manager, who have the knowledge or recommendations I need.”

These are just two examples of growth and opportunity here at The Cleary Company. We encourage all of our Team members to learn, grow, and create opportunities to succeed.

    Professional Accreditation & Continuing Education

When pursuing a career path with The Cleary Company, we provide support to our Team members. Especially to those who are interested in expanding their skills and knowledge with continuing education and various certification programs.

  • Growth of Columbus Fueling Remodeling Industry

Growth of Columbus Fueling Remodeling Industry

It is exciting to see the growth and development happening all around the Columbus Metro area. At The Cleary Company we have experienced tremendous growth in the last decade as well. As we’ve seen increasing demands for remodeling, we’ve also listened to our client’s needs and wants. This has resulted in the development of two new divisions, bath2BATH in 2018 and Home Services in 2020. These new divisions of The Cleary Company compliment our Remodel-Design-Build core business model and help our Team more efficiently serve our clients’ needs.

What does the growth in Central Ohio mean for careers in home remodeling?

While all of this growth has been exciting, it has not come without its challenges. We have felt these challenges most acutely in our workforce. The growth in our industry has placed intense pressure on the existing workforce. There has been and continues to be an increased demand for finding experienced, trained craftspeople. Not only to fill our labor needs but also the needs of our skilled Trade Partners. And we have decided to do our part.

There is a gap in the representation of the 35-50 year old demographic in the skilled trades due to the Great Recession. A decade ago, many skilled tradespeople that were in the burgeoning years of a career left due to the lack of work. This is one reason for the labor shortage we now find ourselves in. Another is the false narrative that life in the skilled trades is a “vocational consolation prize” (quote credit to Mike Rowe).

While it seems that Millennials have mostly shunned the skilled trades due to this narrative and pursued college degrees to avoid it, Gen Z seems to be learning the lessons of previous generations supposed path to success. College is not for everyone, and many successful and rewarding careers do not need a college education. In addition to this understanding, debt from college has caused many to pause and consider the need for an expensive and potentially unnecessary college degree.

Opportunities for professional trade development and training.

At The Cleary Company we see the dawning of a new generation of motivated, hungry, and creative people searching out a life in the skilled trades. We have opened our doors to those searching for a meaningful and challenging career but need additional training towards building a career. Job Classifications have been created for every position in the company which gives our Team the information of knowing how to navigate and plan their career path. This also gives them ownership of setting and reaching personal goals.

There are many ways to prepare for a flourishing life, college is not the only one. Coming soon is an additional tool currently in development, a construction course. The goal? To teach the fundamentals of residential construction to those new to the remodeling industry. A Skills Punch Card will assist the apprentice craftsperson to develop the skills needed to further develop their career.

The growth of our region’s economy and therefore our industry can translate into growth for the individual; professionally and personally. This is part of the long-term strategy at The Cleary Company to solve the problems of the labor shortages in our industry. Sound interesting? Build your career with our Team, whose strategic growth is built for meeting the demands of a growing economy in Columbus.

Owner George Cleary, 25 years of Remodeling

Then & Now with George Cleary CR, Owner

April is not only the month George celebrates his birthday but it’s also the month back in 1994 when he established The Cleary Company. With his 10+ years of experience working in construction, George set up an office in the basement of his home in Upper Arlington. He purchased a computer, a truck and hired his first crew of buddies to complete jobs generated from his connections and respect in the community.

Fast forward to 2019 and the company has grown into a Remodel Design Build firm with 25 employees, over $5 million in revenue and is set to move into their newly remodeled 11,000sf office! So Happy Birthday & Congratulations to George and The Cleary Company Remodel Design Build Columbus OH.

When asked what’s changed the most with the business in the last 25 years, George doesn’t hesitate and says, bathrooms. “Bathrooms have evolved into home spas. Places where homeowners want to start and end their day in a relaxing luxury. Showers have gotten bigger and bathtubs are smaller.” According to the 3 designers on staff, the most requested luxury items for master bathroom remodels are heated floors and zero threshold showers with multiple shower heads and body sprays. They even get requests for steam showers!

George continues, “When I started my business back in 1994, we were mostly building decks, screened porches and privacy fences for friends and family members and now we’re building whole houses! I am so excited to begin our next 25 years and moving into our new location at 989 Old Henderson Rd. Our new space features a design studio with a larger space for our new sample library with products and finishes from our most trusted partners. Our new kitchen is fully functional. Perfect for showing off appliances and hosting cooking demonstrations along with our popular Wine & Design events.”

Cleary’s Craftsmanship Earns Repeat Business: Homeowners Return for Multiple Remodeling Projects

8 Home Remodeling Projects Large & Small | Columbus, OH

Meet Jane, she and her husband Joe have been clients of The Cleary Company since 2002! Over the years they’ve hired our Team to complete a total of 8 home remodeling projects ranging from new windows and an exterior face lift to a kitchen remodel. Working with Jane and Joe over the years has been a pleasure and we appreciate their trust in us.

Jane on the red carpet at our 20th anniversary party! | September 25, 2014

What has been your favorite part of working with The Cleary Company?

My favorite part is the quality of work they do! I have high expectations and no matter the project big or small, they’ve completed what I expected.

Why did you originally choose The Cleary Company to complete your renovation/remodeling projects? And why did you continue to choose them for future projects?

We had seen their job signs in the area and George is our neighbor. We know him personally which is very important. He even stopped by one night to just check and see how the project was going and how we were doing.

One of the main reasons I went with them for our last two projects, all new windows and a kitchen remodel that included removing interior walls, was the fact that they have a design team. I had seen some of their completed projects on social media and in person.  For us to take on a project of this size when you’re committed to staying in your home that is 50+ years old, we didn’t want it to look like we did a remodel. We wanted it to look like we updated a home and everything still flows. I knew that they would be able to accomplish my vision. Their Team and the quality of work is why we’ve had them do so many projects over the years.

What advice would you offer to someone who is thinking of remodeling their home?

Do your homework! If it’s a huge project then you should seriously consider if living through a remodel is what you really want to do. Weigh all of your options, location, cost to remodel, moving or building new. If you do decide to remodel, seriously consider moving out during the project. It’s hard to live in it day to day when people are interrupting your schedule. It can be done, but it’s hard.

Who is your favorite team member?

They’re all good! I just love Laura and learned to trust her from the very beginning that she was going to create a design plan that reflected my vision. I didn’t want to get rid of my original kitchen cabinets because they didn’t look like they needed to be replaced and she was able to pull everything together so it didn’t look like I had old and new mixed together. Her design insight is incredible.

Rob, my project manager, made sure that when something came up he addressed it. The open communication was perfect.

If you were asked to explain in one word why you choose to do business with The Cleary Company, what would it be? Integrity
